HELLO?? HULKENBERG???? What are you doing there
Teams usually start bringing in large upgrade packages by now, with the start of the European races, as it’s far easier to transport them. Because of this, the constructors’ (or even drivers’) championship could change drastically following this weekend.
Here's a list of upgrades I could find + FP results. Do take it all with a grain of salt though since it's just practice.
Ferrari : New sidepod inlets and rear wings amongst other things (9 upgrades in total).
To the joy of all the Italian men watching, Charles Leclerc topped the time sheets, leading by over a tenth in both FP1 and 2.
Red Bull : upgraded their floor, front wing, rear corner and nose.
Max Verstappen, however, had a terrible few sessions, taking a short tumble onto the gravel and seeming to carry balance and grip issues over from Miami. It wasn’t just him in the gravel though, as he was joined by Sainz, Tsunoda, Albon, Hamilton, Piastri and others across the FP sessions.
His teammate, Perez, didn’t fare any better, with a red flag called in FP3 after he skipped across a turn hit the wall.
Aston Martin : Brought in new front wings, nose, floor, diffuser, engine cover, rear suspension and rear corner. Alonso crashed in FP3 as well, causing the first red flag.
Mclaren : Brought circuit-specific wings. They're still going strong, Piastri going second fastest in FP2 and both Mclarens topping the times in FP3.
VCARB : Hasn't seem to bring in any large upgrades going into their home race. Doesn't seem to matter though as Tsunoda goes 3rd fastest in FP2.
Williams : Made some tweaks to their floor.
Albon also signed to extend his contract earlier this week while on the way to kiss stingrays, citing that he believes in the “long-term project” that Williams is currently building on.
In FP1 however, his car’s engine shut down, leading to speculation about whether or not this was the best decision for his career. The car is also apparently overweight, rendering it much slower.
Sargeant didn't receive the aforementioned upgrade as far as I know.
Alpine, Stake : Have done the same as Williams, slightly upgrading their floors.
Haas : Now have a new, reshaped rear wing suspension. Nothing too noteworthy happened, except Magnussen cutting it a bit close to Ricciardo's RB in the last few seconds of FP3.
Mercedes : Have a new floor body, floor fences, beam wing, rear wing and front corner, seemingly the second part of the upgrades brought in at Miami.
Russell goes second fastest in FP1, only for both Merc drivers to complain about bumping in FP2.
And that's it! See you all for Quali :))
We return to Imola at last, so a blast from the past style poster 🇮🇹🏎️ Here's to race week!
Alex just extended his contract with Williams and if you haven't seen it yet apparently he was on his way to kiss stringray when they called him? They couldn't have given him a heads up 😭😭?? This team is so unserious sometimes (affectionate)
Miami ✅
Absolutely insane race, I still can’t believe Lando’s got a win now but it makes so much sense that his first would be in Miami lol
Anyways I couldn’t fit in in here but congrats to RB for getting double points this weekend!! So deserved 💙💙
I also forgot the incident with Perez locking up and going wide losing his P3 spot and !!almost!! hitting some drivers at the race start
Ricciardo up 5 places and yuki in P7 🔥🔥
about using wag promotion for f1 academy...i seriously have nothing against influencers or models and seriously good on them if they genuinely care about and support the series.
but i mean wouldn't it have made more sense to get lily muni he or tiffany cromwell to do the promo if they wanted wags...yk like the actual professional athletes. or why not consider women who are in motorsport but aren't given the recognition as interviewers or even the wags such as the mechanics who may get lost in the crowd or the pr team who constantly chase after the drivers in the background.
even if it isn't it just comes off disingenuous and reeks of paid promo. which usually wouldn't be a problem but its an odd direction f1 academy should be going for their image.
I just had to watch the sprint and quali with no social media, so I didn't get the sprint spoiled (I was sleeping), and y'all, I missed everyone's incoherent live blogging SO MUCH. Literally the highlight of the sport TO ME. If you ever think you're live blogging too much, that's the devil talking, actually, and I think you should do it EVEN MORE
Out Q1
Zhou Guanyu, Magnussen, Ricciardo, Sargeant, Bottas
(In order from lowest to highest position, so P20-16)
Magnussen unfortunately not in a place to get points, citing too many cars in the last corner as the reason
Ricciardo also to qualify last following his 3 place grid penalty from China. It seems if you do irregularly well in the sprint you end up placing last during quali... 🥲
Out Q2
Alonso, Albon, Ocon, Gasly, Stroll (P15-11)
Albon complains about low grip and high tire degradation, almost hits the barriers while turning
"The tyres are absolutely destroyed, I can't get them to last more than six corners."
Lando Norris gets a lap time deleted but it has no effect
Alonso, not making it through to Q3 for the first time this season
Q1 results
Tsunoda, Hulkenberg, Hamilton, Russell, Piastri, Norris, Perez, Sainz, Leclerc, Verstappen (P10-1)
Verstappen takes pole position again
Hamilton went 2nd fastest in Q2 but isn't able to replicate it for Q1
Sainz and Hulkenberg have an incident (impeding) but no further action is taken
"I prefer it at the front." - Daniel Ricciardo after the sprint
RICNATION WE ARE SO BACK!!!!
The Sainz vs Ricciardo fight for 4th is singlehandedly raising my blood pressure
Ed sheeran? At the Miami GP? It's more likely than you'd think.
Wildcard entries are basically one driver from each race country, who get to race in F1 academy for the weekend. In Miami, the honor goes to Californian Courtney Crone who will race in car 77, supported by QVC.
She's 23 and has raced sportscars for the last 4 years, although she did race single-seaters before that, as well as speedway motorcycles. Some notable achievements of hers are winning the IMSA Diverse Driver Development Scholarship (2022/23), the Gorsline Company Scholarship (2021) and the Formula Speed Scholarship. She was also a nominee for the Team USA Scholarship and W Series.
She currently competes in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo NA.
The series will no doubt kickstart her return to single-seaters, as well as give her an entry into more international motorsports.
Best of luck to her this weekend!!
I know I usually do little recap posts but since the time difference is insane and the quali and race is at 6am and the race is on a MONDAY I'm probably not going to (either that or they'll be so extremely delayed) so. real sorry about that folks. 😞😞
Daniel: we belong there. We belong towards the front.
let's FUCKING GOOOOOOOOO
There is a lot of confusion flying around right now on Adrian Newey’s contract. Employment law terms are being thrown about, some incorrectly. As a lawyer, here are some things you should know:
1. Gardening Leave - this means the period of time in which Newey is technically still paid and employed by RBR but is not allowed to do any work, so he doesn’t get any inside info. Newey has been placed on gardening leave from the RBR F1 division effective immediately. He is not on gardening leave from the HyperCar division.
2. Non-compete period - this means the period of time in which Newey is not allowed to work for another team. This will be triggered by a specific event, which we don’t know. It could start when Newey goes on F1 gardening leave (now) or when Newey’s F1 contract officially ends (near the end of 2024 or early 2025). We simply don’t know.
This means we don’t know for sure whether Adrian Newey will become available to other teams in 2025 or 2026.
Media outlets reporting 2025 do not have sufficient info off the back of the RBR press release to confirm this. Unless they have been told specific and private contractual details that we don’t know
Its F1 race week again!! Also a reminder that F1 academy is also racing in Miami (3-5th of May) for their second race of the season! :)
The Chinese GP summary! Ft. Sprint Shenanigans, RB and Alpine suffering, Zhou Guanyu (💚💚💚), Nico being Lewis's number one fan and Max Verstappen doing his thing
Took my sweet time with this one but its done. As always, click to see it better and enjoy! :]
Another update: he just got a 3 grid penalty for miami. Lol.
So far:
- RB didn't pit Ricciardo during the safety car
- Stroll slams into the back of Ricciardo (who hit the breaks to avoid a collision with Piastri)
- Ricciardo reports floor damage
