Wall of Shame for gif+fanworks thieves and their supporters who steal my stuff and can't even give me a very simple apology. I'm not asking for much y'all! When it's not dealing with reposters, a general blog about gifs and other relevant PSAs. Have fun reading them all, hopefully you'll learn something significant about how to interact with strangers you don't know online. Genuinely, I hope they help, but I won't entertain reposters, trolls, or any of their supporters. By the way, if you've reposted my stuff or tried to argue with me in favor of stealing and reposting other's hard work without giving proper credit and asking for Permissions, delete it!!! Any reblog here noting fanworks thieves or supporters stays up until relevant posts or conversations are fully, one hundred percent deleted. It's super easy!!! "ANYONE CAN DO IT!!!"

I find as fandom has assimilated towards a capitalist mindset of consumption, there has been a larger focus on fanart and fanfiction- both in spaces that view creatives as "content creators" and spaces where creatives are seen as writers and authors but lauded similarly to celebrities or deities for gracing the common people with their creations.
This has produced a side effect wherein fanart and, primarily, fanfiction are seen as the Best Forms Of Transformative Works... which means that any other type of transformative work is thrown by the wayside.
There should be no hierarchy of fanworks - every single work is a labor of love (or spite... I see y'all throwing middle fingers to canon đ) and should be recognized as such. Fandom is a community. It's not a transactional relationship. Everyone contributes and interacts out of shared passions and interests.
If you make podfics, gifs, photo edits, fanvids, fan binding, metas, fiber arts, jewelry, fanmixes, translate fics to another language, run/contribute to a fan wikia or compile lore and resources in other ways: I see, appreciate, and cherish all the hard, love fueled work you put into your creations.
Not to say that fanfic and digital art are over-appreciated (Since I do see that many people are allergic to pressing reblog. It's a community. We're supposed to share and communicate. Lurkers are valid but for the most part, interaction with like-minded people is what fandom is intended for.) but the pedestal they are placed on needs to be lowered. Your favorite artists and authors are real people with real lives. They piss and shit just like you. They work in retail and healthcare and are unemployed due to disability. There is nothing extraordinary about them and they are wonderful human beings all the same. No one is better than anyone else. We're all equals here on this playground.
That said, I think we need to uplift the underappreciated fanworks and creators and give them more attention so they are on equal footing with fanfic writers and fanartists. Reblog the gifsets and tell the creator you're in love with how they colored the gifs, keyboard smash in the tags when reblogging a plush doll someone crocheted of your blorbo, try listening to a podfic on your commute home instead of an audiobook and remember to leave a comment when you get home.
As a final note, I want to give a warm hug to anyone who has sat refreshing tumblr or ao3 hoping that maybe someone will tell them they did a good job. To anyone who has considered quitting their fandom endeavors because their posts or works never get as much attention and love as the rest of the artworks or fics in the fandom tags, your creations are worth making and sharing. Numbers do not equate to quality, nor can they convey how loved your creations are by a given person. Only you can bring your unique sparkle to fandom and your presence is absolutely welcome no matter how big or small, grandiose or inconsequential, important or worthless you think it is.
people complaining about the lack of content in fandoms lately: maybe if y'all didnât steal and repost other peopleâs hard work and actually showed your appreciation for it by liking it, commenting on it, reblogging it, etc, and/or didnât spend all your time harassing people who like things you donât like, or like things differently than you, fanartists and writers would feel like producing more work?
anyone notice a new trend of really entitled people joining fandom?
I feel like jerks have existed since the beginning of time, but it feels worse lately.
So far this year, Iâve witnessed:
People offering free unasked criticism to artists because theyâre not happy with the way their favourites are portrayed, stating that âthey deserve to know what they did wrong so they can improveâ while the feedback they offered was âwhy does everyone look like theyâre on ozem***â (idk if i need to tw this word)
Also giving feedback AND REVIEWS to FANFIC as if theyâre published works (and adding them on GOODREADS TO RATE)
People mass producing binded fanfiction and making THOUSANDS of dollars off work they did not create (they stole the artwork too)
People running incomplete fanfictions through AI because the writer wasnât updating and COMMENTING on the fic telling others to do the same so they can get an ending
And now, in the span of two days:
People trying to argue that if they canât sell binded fanfiction, then youâre not allowed to commission fanart from artists either
The same people encouraging people to use AI or steal fanart for their binds
ALSO the same people openly admitting that when they typset fics, they will edit the fanfiction and change entire sentences so that it 'makes more sense to themâ â one person complained the entire fic was rough gramatically and was seeking permission not from the author but OTHER BINDERS to freely edit as they please
Iâm trying to be a positive person in the communities Iâm in, but GOD I am so tired. Every day I fight a battle deciding if I should just be a worse person, everyoneâs doing whatever the hell they want anyway.
Some of you have never worked with an editing program and think that making gifs and edits takes like two seconds and it shows
i just wanted to clarify some things
artists know the risk they are taking when they post their art online. people are inevitably going to take it apart, color edit it, flip it around or otherwise post it uncredited.
saying that an artist shouldnât post their work if they donât want it bastardized is probably the stupidest stance on this subject you could take. if all artists followed this line of reasoning, there would be no art on the internet.Â
when an artist posts their work, they are trusting you to enjoy it respectfully. and when you betray that trust either knowingly or unknowingly, itâs like saying the artistâs time, skills and thoughts arenât worth anything.
you are NOT entitled to an artists work just because they decided to trust you enough to share it with you.
an artist is within their right to feel upset that someone has used their work in a way they never intended it to be used. they are within their right to ask for it to stop and not happen again.
just because itâs âbound to happenâ doesnât mean itâs any less deplorable.
So, like I said, I really wanted to create something new to celebrate Odaiba Day. I had no real plan going into this and I'll admit that I was kind of winging it. Because of this it's not the most detailed story I've ever written. But it's still okay and certainly better than nothing.
Once more, happy Odaiba Day to all the Chosen Children around the world!
You donât own fanfics. Theyâre inherently public domain because they arenât your IP. Agree or disagree with AI, there are no grounds for âprotectionâ from AI because it isnât your IP to begin with. Thatâs what you chose when you chose this medium
Oh dear.
Okay, you get an answer, because at least you took the effort to write your ask out properly, even if you are hiding behind the grey, sunglassed circle.
Do I, or any fanfic author for that matter, have any legal claims to our work? No, not really, no. (Although if someone took a fic, filed off the serial number--deleted the fandom specific elements--, and then had it published for financial gain, yeah, that would be a case.)
BUT
Disrepectfully,
Orlissa
(i can't believe I have to say this)
âWhatâs so bad about reposting?â
âItâs easy to make gifs, who cares.âÂ
 Wrong.Â
And hereâs why:Â
Presumably, youâre reposting because you either:Â
a) donât have access to the video thatâs gifâd because you donât know where itâs from or you donât know how to download it. Which already proves that making gifs is difficult because of the time spent video hunting and downloading. (Youâd be surprised how hard it is to download videos from certain websites.)
b) donât have access to photoshop, because youâre not sure how to download it, or you do have it but donât know how to work it. Which again, proves making gifs is difficult because itâs more than just right clicking then saving as (which is what reposting is - so if you catch yourself doing this, stop!) You have to learn how to use photoshop to actually make a gif, and to actually use photoshop you have to know how and where to download it. Some people even pay for it, and itâs extremely unfair to those that do because something they essentially paid for is getting stolen from them.
Gifs are not even just about being able to do the basic load files into stacks or import layers from frames, whichever method of gif making you prefer. Nope. Itâs about coloring as well, which makes your gif unique and different from someone elseâs. People spend time making their gifs look nice in addition to spending their time looking for the right video and whatnot.Â
So have some respect for people that do their best to provide you with pretty gifs on your dashboard to reblog >:(Â
(No, it does not count if you repost someoneâs gif and âgive creditâ, especially if the source is âitâs not mine but I found it on Googleâ. Tumblr made a beautiful function called a REBLOG. Use it. Itâs your best friend.)Â
Next time you say, âeveryone repostsâ or âtheyâre just gifsâ, keep in mind making gifs isnât actually as easy as some people belittle it to be! Try making gifs for yourself and see how hard it is. Really, try.Â
(And if youâre thinking, âoh making gifs is so easy! Iâve tried it!â then it literally costs you $0.00 to make your own gifs and gain notes through your own hard work. Seriously. Stop taking credit for someone elseâs hard work.)
Stopping reposts can happen if you take a step to stop yourself from reposting and letting others know why itâs bad too. If no one tells you what youâre doing is wrong, how would you know what youâre doing isnât right? One by one, we can all eventually stop reposting because itâs very disrespectful to artists (yes, gif makers are considered artists too). If you want notes, earn them yourself just like how every original content makers do. And even if you canât make anything yourself, donât be mean. Support peopleâs works.Â
(This applies to everyone that makes original content, fan art, fan fiction, graphics, etc. The steps in between to make them are different, but reposts effect all of us the same. Please stop reposting and respect the artists.)
