Fantasy Guide to Feasts, Food and Drink

Fantasy Guide To Feasts, Food And Drink

Picture yourself at a banquet held at the local Lord's castle. The music is playing, the people are chatting and rustling about in their best clothes. You sit at a table and what sits before you? Not chicken nuggets, my friend.

Food is always one of the staples of any world you build. You can get a feel of class, society and morality just by looking at the spread before you on the table.

Food for lower classes (Peasants)

Most peasants lived off the land, rearing flocks, tilling fields and tending orchards. If they lived near the sea, lakes, rivers or streams, they would fish. But since they lived on land owned by churches or lords, they would only be allowed a portion of what they grew. In cities, the peasants would buy food from one another at the market.

Fantasy Guide To Feasts, Food And Drink

Peasants would make bread out of rye grain, that would make the bread very dark. In some communities they would make sourdough, which involves using a piece of dough you made the day before to make that day's bread.

Eggs were a source of food that was easy to come by as farmers kept chickens on hand.

Cheese and butter would be sold and used in the farm.

Jam would also be made as it was easy to preserve and sell.

Peasants would not eat much meat. Chickens made money by laying eggs, pigs could be fattened and sold for profit and cows and goats would be used for milk. By killing any of these animals for food they would loose a portion of money. Poaching (hunting on private land owned by the lord) would come with severe penalties.

Pottage and stew were a favourite of peasants as they could throw any vegetables or bit of meat or fish in a pot to cook for a few hours. It wasn't a difficult dish to make and often inexpensive.

Pies, pasties and pastries would be a favourite at inns and taverns in towns and cities most containing gravy, meat and vegetables.

With most villages and farms set close to forests, many peasants could find berries at the edge of fields. Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries would have all grown wild.

Food for Nobility & Royalty

Fantasy Guide To Feasts, Food And Drink

Nobility and Royalty could always afford better food than the poor. However it might be a patch more unhealthy than the poor's fare. Nobility and Royalty weren't fans of vegetables.

The rich would eat a lot of meat, much of which they would hunt down themselves on their own land. Deer, wild boar, rabbits, turkey and other wild creatures would all be on the table.

Nobility and Royalty would be fond of fish as well. Lamprey eels was a delicacy only preserved for special occasions.

They could afford salt which was important for preserving meat and fish. This would allow the castle/manor/palace to be stocked in times of winter or famine.

They could also afford pepper and other spices, all of which could cost a fortune, to flavour their food.

During a feast, they would eat off of platters made of precious metals but only if you were seated at the high table. Other less important guests would eat off a trencher, a piece of hollowed out stale bread.

Sugar would be the height of dessert. The sugar would be shaped into fantastical formations to impress the noble guests. Tudor chefs would create edible sugar plates for Henry VIII to eat off of.

Swans and peacocks would be served in their plumage. Swans would be more royal diners as in England the monarch owns all the swans. In Ireland, it is illegal to kill a swan mainly because they could be children trapped in swan-bodies. Long story.

Feasts

Fantasy Guide To Feasts, Food And Drink

At certain events, the noble/monarch might throw a party. Most parties would begin with a dinner.

The high table would seat the family throwing the party and the honoured guests. All the food would come to them first to be distributed to their favourites. They would drink the best wine and have the finest bread.

The rest of the hall would be seated together at trestle tables, eating off trenchers. They would be sent food by the thrower of the feast on account of their personal importance or social standing. The closer you were to the salt cellar, placed at the head of the table the more important you were. The further away you were, the lower your status.

Servants called cupbearers would serve wine and drink and move about the hall to carry jugs of wine to water the guests.

Dogs would often be found in the hall, to be fed scraps by the diners.

Drink

Fantasy Guide To Feasts, Food And Drink

No world or party is complete without the booze. Since much of the water in Mediaeval times was putrid or dirty, the classes would avoid it.

Beer: was both a favourite of peasants and the nobility. It would be brewed in castles or in taverns and inns, each site having a different recipe and taste. It would be stored in barrels. Beer was widely available across the world and could be brewed at home. So therefore it was inexpensive.

The two main types of beer would be:

Ale: Ale in the middle ages referred to beer brewed without hops (a kind of flowering plant that gives beer its bitter taste). It is sweeter and would typically have a fruity aftertaste.

Stout: is a darker beer sometimes brewed from roasted malt, coming in a sweet version and dry version, the most famous stout being Guinness.

Wine: Wine would be made on site of vineyards and stored in cellars of large houses or castles. They would be expensive as they would have to be imported from regions capable of growing vines.

Port: Port wine or fortified wine would be made with distilled grape spirits. It is a sweet red wine, and also would be expensive to import from the counties able to grow the correct vines.

Whiskey: is a spirit made from distilled fermented grain mash in a device called a still (which would always be made of copper). The age of whiskey is determined by the length of time it has been sitting in a cask from the time it is made to the time its put in bottles. Whiskey was a favourite drink in colder climates and could be made any where in the world.

Rum: Rum is made by fermenting and distilling sugarcane molasses/juice. It is aged in oak barrels and would have to be imported as it could only be made in lands able to grow sugarcane.

Poitín: (pronounced as pot-cheen) is made from cereals, grain, whey, sugar beet, molasses and potatoes. It is a Dangerous Drink (honestly i still don't know how I ended up in that field with a traffic cone and a Shetland pony) and technically illegal. Country folk in Ireland used to brew it in secrets in stills hidden on their land.

Is Maria still a Robotnik in this au? If not, might I suggest her being Crazy Carl's granddaughter or grandniece? And she aspires to be a cryptid hunter like her grandfather/uncle? And that's how they find Shadow! Maria convinces Jojo to go on a mini cryptid hunt during a sleepover one night after hearing a noise outside. So they go out in their PJ's with flashlights and a fishing net Wade keeps in the storage closet and they end up finding Shadow that way xD

Aquaman Jason Momoa Swaps Fish For Fur In ‘Frontier,’ Netflix’s Violent Look At The Fur Trade

Aquaman Jason Momoa Swaps Fish For Fur In ‘Frontier,’ Netflix’s Violent Look At The Fur Trade

By Ricky Derisz

Jason Momoa is now a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood, having landed the part of aquatic superhero Aquaman, with an imminent appearance in this year’s Justice League. But before he splashed into the big time, started talking to fish and waded through H20 topless, the actor made a name for himself on the small screen.

Having built his reputation from appearances in shows such as Stargate Atlantis and Game of Thrones, Momoa will return to his TV-roots for the leading role in Frontier, an upcoming Netflix original that paints an authentic and gory picture of the 18th Century Canadian fur trade, and the struggle between Native tribes and Europeans.

While it’s pleasing to see the 37-year-old land a stylish, big-budget role as Aquaman, #Frontier provides the perfect backdrop to elevate #JasonMomoa to his intimidating best. He stars as Declan Harp, a half-Irish, half-Native American outlaw who turns against Canadian fur traders, Hudson Bay Company, in an attempt to shatter their monopoly over the industry.

'Frontier’ Could Be Momoa’s Most Brutal Role

This is not for the faint-hearted; the fight for control of the lucrative trade resulted in relentless violence, negotiation in the form of hatchet fights (as gruesome as they sound), and oceans of spilled blood. As the ruthless protagonist, Harp resorts to vicious means to aid his one-man-war against fur traders in the American Frontier.

Having been co-produced by Discovery Channel Canada and #Netflix, the series was originally aired on the former network late last year, before its international release on Netflix later this month. Check out the action-packed trailer below:

Although the non-stop conveyor belt of TV shows is dizzying, Frontier is staking a claim for a binge-worthy winter choice. The role of Harp is suited to Momoa’s physicality and sneering savagery; qualities he displayed in abundance with his portrayal of Dothraki warrior Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones.

Plus, the show is easily digestible — with only six episodes — and it was shot in gloriously detailed 4K. What’s not to like?

Delicately Handling Real Life Events

It’s important to remember that Frontier is draped in history, the hunt for materials to make luxury clothing splitting apart indigenous communities and having a serious and lasting impact on many lives.

Crucially, the show has been praised for delicately handling the interaction with natives and depicting the “cutthroat” business for what it truly is — shown from various perspectives. Consequently, Frontier could be one of the most action-heavy, murderously entertaining binges for the dark winter nights.

Just avoid if you don’t like the sight of blood.

Frontier is released on Netflix on January 20, 2017.

West Branch Part 2

image

After stopping for lunch, I continued upstream on the West Branch of the White River. The weather stayed nice, alternating between sunshine (which I appreciated) and cloudiness (which the fish appreciated).

This section proved even more productive than the stretch I fished in the morning. I caught several more browns and just a couple of rainbows. Then, I scored that elusive brook trout, completing the triple play of Wisconsin trout fishing!

I waded three hours in the afternoon, catching ten browns, two rainbows, and one brook trout.

Fly, Fly Away From Me (Angsty!Lotidge)

For @lotidge and @olkarianprincess because gosh darn it I should be studying.

===

Lotor had never cared for birds. Small, stupid little things that never seemed to avoid such blatant decoys. Be it plastic or stuffed bait, birds would fall upon them. Thinking them family. She reminded him of a bird in that sense. Small and quick, yes. But stupid? Not at all. The Green Paladin of Voltron was a force to be reckoned with. Her intellect deadlier than any weapon she could ever wield. But that’s not why she reminded the Galran Prince of a bird. Oh no. It was that undying kinship. Lotor had stumbled upon her searches for a man he could only assume was her brother. It was that near-reckless willingness to find him that reminded Lotor of a bird. A bird that could be caught. The Galran Prince had simply manipulated the data she would find to lead her into a trap. So eager she was! Disregarding her teammates warnings. Flying straight into the fire. And the sight of the Green Lion being shot out the sky should’ve…fulfilled Lotor in some vital way. But it didn’t. The Lion fell from the sky. Crashing unto the land. Like a fallen star. A dead, decaying creature that was once full of life. Naturally, Lotor tracked the metal carcass down to make sure the Green Paladin was captured and secured. Alive. He had wanted her alive. He had wanted to hear that bird-like heartbeat slamming against her rib cage as he closed upon her. He had wanted to see the fear in her eyes. Not this. Not the lower half of her small body pinned down under the Lion’s control panel. Bones, nerves, muscle all flattened and crushed to a pulp. Not the tree branch skewering her stomach. Bile and blood at war with each other underneath Lotor’s boots. Alive. He had wanted her alive. He wanted her blood pumping and heart hammering. He didn’t want this. He didn’t want her head at that angle. Looking up at him in such a way that made it oblivious that her last moments had been far from peaceful. Gold eyes dull with Death. An arm outstretched. But to reached what? It took Lotor some time, but he found it. A ways away from the wreckage of the Green Lion. A small, seemingly insignificant thing really. A photo. One with a girl and boy. The boy Lotor instantly recognized as the rebel he had baited the Green Paladin with. But the girl? She was lovely. Willowy and small, beaming in the burnt, bloody photo. Hair long and beautiful. Gold eyes shining. Lotor’s legs gave out as he went back to the Green Paladin’s corpse. The realization taking a hold of him feeling not unlike drowning in fire. This mangles corpse. This small woman. This enemy to his empire. She had once been this girl. She had once been a beautiful creature with the promise of the future in her eyes and a body barely strong enough to cling to her brother properly. Lotor looked toward the corpse. And understood. He finally understood birds. With they’re yearning to be with those they love, they’re willing to risk it all. If only they can get a last embrace, a last spot of warmth. Only to be struck to the ground. But even bloody and broken, birds still cry. Cry for their kin, not knowing their fake, but still HOPING. Lotor looked at the bloodied woman. And wanted to cry. Birds! Stupid, stupid beautiful birds. He looked to the woman who had died in agony but still yearned for her brother more than anything, and all Lotor could do was clench his eyes shut and look away. Maybe he had been wrong about this woman. She wasn’t as smart as he gave her credit for. No, no. This girl truly was a stupid bird. Caught up in a lions’ game.
