Hotel California by the Eagles except it’s playing through headphones that hand around your neck while you wait at an inner-city bus stop late at night in the rain. Throughout the song it seems that a pair of footsteps get louder and louder, and the dumpster in the alley next to you begins rumbling as though something is inside it, but something tells you not to turn around. Or else you might miss that bus.

Let It Be by The Beatles except you’re in your room on a late summer’s night, crying your eyes out over something dumb but knowing you need to get it out, and in the middle of it you put this song on your old record player. It’s deeply cathartic as you stare at the ceiling and listen to the breeze outside your window.

You swim past the kelp and schools of fish and enjoy the way the sun’s light moves around the water. Killer Queen by Queen except on your car stereo while you and your girlfriend drive away from a burning city during the apocalypse. Luckily some rain is starting to come in.

Drumming Song by Florence and the Machine except you’re doing a cult ritual with the gals at midnight in the woods. Florence is there herself to provide the music.

Which Witch by Florence And The Machine except from a friend’s phone while you explore the burial sites of the witches tried in your town of Salem in 1693. The autumn winds seem to carry not only leaves but the sounds of singing from the nearby woods - which you only realize once the song ends but the music doesn’t. You can only hope that those restless spirits don’t decide to follow you home.
