Squid Game AU - Playing the marble game with Shoto Todoroki

You will compete with your partner in a marble game of your choosing. The loser will be eliminated.

"The game is simple," Shoto says, his ten marbles simply lying in the palm of his open hand. They should be the promise of something fun, a nice afternoon spent playing games with friends, and yet, you know they'll be coated in blood soon enough.

Will it be his or yours?

"Here are the only two rules. Listen well."

His free hand rises until softly stroking your shoulder, the gesture meant to be reassuring and yet bringing a cold shiver down your spine. It's one of the last times he's touching you, you know. It's one of the last times you can raise your eyes to his and gaze into his mismatched irises. It's one of the last times he gets to look at you lovingly, the promise of a future together stolen far too early by a stupid game of marbles.

"The rules are: you win, and I lose."

Your blood freezes in your veins. This can't be happening. This can't be happening. This can't be happening. Shoto doesn't give you enough time to protest and instead grabs your wrist in his lean, icy cold fingers to slip every single one of his marbles in your palm.

You feel like you can't breathe.

You feel like you're going to die if he says another word.

You feel like you've already been shot and yet you're the one with a golden ticket to your future and not him.

The stupid, unwanted future he won't be a part of.

"Shoto, you can't-"

"Sir?" he calls the masked guy standing stiffly next to the two of you. "We're done here. I lost."

It all goes so fast you don't even see it coming, not while your whole world is crumbling right under you feet at the exact same speed the man in a triangle mask raises his weapon towards Shoto's forehead.

"Don't look," he says with a soft, rare, kind smile. And, then, he whispers, lower, with a tenderness that stabs you in the chest to leave you torn open, bleeding to death. "Love you."

You don't obey his last demand, don't fulfill his last wish.

You look, and blood splatters on your face, in your eyes, on your lips as the bullet goes through his head, as he falls down to his knees and then on the ground, his body now cold, lifeless as it rests next to the stupid marbles that have slipped from your trembling fingers.

They're coated in his blood, now.

Squid Game AU - Playing the marble game with Katsuki Bakugo

"You're fucking kidding me," Bakugo growls, and it's the kind of sound that means nothing good is going to happen now, not if he has a say in it. The kind of sound that means fury is running in his veins, rage burning its way through his chest and brain, hatred coating his heart wholly and fully and leaving nothing behind but a trail of blood in Bakugo's wake.

You're not even sure if he noticed, but he caught your hand in a firm and yet tender grip as soon as the voice pronounced the deadly words.

In this game, you will compete with your partner.

Meaning one of you will get shot in the head in less than 30 minutes. And there is no escape, no way out now that the game has started. One of you will get to walk away from this hell of a fake little town, leaving the other's corpse behind, lying in a pool of blood.

Bakugo lets go of your hand to catch the masked man standing next to you by the collar of his red outfit. You hear him gag a bit under the black metal covering his face, but there's no struggling against Bakugo of all people. He could break anyone's neck with a flick of his wrist if only his opponent wasn't carrying a rifle in his gloved hands.

"What the fuck does this mean?" he barks, and for the first time, there isn't only pure anger dripping from his tone. Raw despair pulls at his vocal chords too, just like it pulls at your thoughts, at your chest, at your heart.

"Katsuki," you call, voice wavering as the masked man raises his weapon to your boyfriend's chest.

Bakugo has no choice but to step back, teeth gritted and fury in his gaze.

28 minutes left.

"I'm not going to play with you," he says then. "Think I care about those stupid marbles?" In a gesture filled with angry violence, he snatches your little satchel from your fingers and opens it with a snarl to slip his marbles inside. "Here, take them all. 'm not going to play with your life over some dumb fucking toys."

You try to get the satchel back from him, but he pushes you away.

"Wait, Katsuki! You have to play with me, you have to!"

You wouldn't be able to live with yourself if he laid his life out for you, and of course, you know, neither could he. He eyes you with a frown, assessing the situation, the little light in his gaze telling you that he does understand that you can't let him go down with a fight, because after all, that's what he is.

A fighter.

"Let's have a game with a 50% chance of winning, right, Kats'? Let's say I put a marble in one of my hands, if you can find the empty one you get my marbles, if you can't then I get yours."

After a few seconds, he nods.

He trusts you.

He shouldn't, not when both of your hands are empty, not when he finds nothing in your palm when you uncurl your fingers to show him the one he chose, not when you give him an apologetic smile as despair creeps over his features, taking over every single emotion in his crimson eyes.

"You win," you tell him, sliding the satchel in the pocket of his sweats.

You think he curses you, calls you something filthy, maybe tells you that he loves you, every single word slipping from his lips with the strength of an anchor pulling at your heart until it sinks down in your chest, until it disappears into the abyssal depths of the love you bear for the man you just saved by forfeiting your life.

He hates you for that now, but it's alright.

"Love you," you whisper as the shot echoes around the room.

And you don't see it, but maybe he falls down to his knees next to your corpse, and maybe he cradles it while crying for you, blood staining his fingers as he pushes back the strands of your hair that have fallen in front of your closed eyes. And maybe he holds you so strongly that his knuckles have turned white, and maybe Kirishima and Izuku have to pull him from your lifeless body so he'll be out of the room by the end of the countdown because he just can't make himself leave you behind. And maybe he hates them too as they do so, and maybe he hates the whole world and the rest now that there's nothing, no one left for him there.

And maybe he'll see you again in his dreams and you'll play marbles then but this time, he'll simply kiss you better if you loose.

Appreciates you especially if you tried so hard to pull for him. He really did his best in order to come home but he’s such a generous person to others and let them come home to you first before himself--such a gentleman, huh?

Oh! You have a Staff of Homa or Deathmatch? Are you going to-

Black Tassel… alright, well at least it gives him a lot of HP! It doesn’t matter that it once was from Zhongli or maybe Hu Tao or you specifically built it for him. He doesn’t really mind because you puting him in your team is just enough for him to be happy.

If you level him up to 80 or 90, he’d be extremely grateful, but to be honest? Whatever level you have him on, he will still do his best whenever you put him on your team and remain loyal to you til the end. The additional power and strength are just bonus points to him.

Helping you is his pleasure, he takes absolute delight in having to assist you and your team in any way he can.

When you don’t place him on your team, he’s a little bit sad but he doesn’t brood over such negativities and is just here to help… that’s it, basically.

Take him to Mondstadt every once in a while! He gets homesick as well, of course, so he will appreciate you if you take him there. You’ll probably see him with the dogs or cats around the square near the fountain, or maybe greeting the vendors and trying to meet the others whom he hadn’t seen for a long time. Where’s his mother anyway? He should try to find her.

When you or your team is in danger he would probably switch to himself on his own accord. You’d sometimes think this is a glitch but he does that most of the times, especially since he was beginning to have feelings for you.

You probably will see your foods increase when you look so closely, or even your fishes that comes from Inazuma. The culprit? Of course, it’s him. There’s no one else who can cook a lot and also catch fish for you like that.

Your teapot house oh Archons. You were just muttering how you like things this way and that in your teapot but you just couldn’t find the time and the next time you log in, he already did it for you.

Your smile makes his day so there are probably times he crits better when he feels energized by your positivity! You’ll find yourself praising him and this continues on until the end of the fight.

When you realize it had been him all long and that he became self aware, he won’t try to hide it from you and would just go along the flow, basically.

I could imagine actually in the Dream of Bloom event, you will find a couple of extra flowers on your inventory, probably one each day--he did that too.

pairings: eijiro kirishima, hitoshi shinsou, izuku midoriya, katsuki bakugou, shoto todoroki, hanta sero, denki kaminari, tokoyami fumikage, tenya iida x gn!reader (warning for angst !!)

EIJIRO KIRISHIMA always believed he could never measure up to your expectations. no matter what he tried doing, no matter what steps he took, no matter what reassuring words you gave– he still felt like the same kid who cried when he found out of his quirk. even when he tried his best to push every insecurity down, eijiro just couldn’t figure it out. because when all was said and done, he still felt broken– and to him, that wasn’t good enough. eijiro kirishima fears expectations and failure.

TOKOYAMI FUMIKAGE can’t see why you’d love him. what was there to love about him? he had a literal bird head. he didn’t talk to anyone, and tried to avoid most conversation if he could. so why would you want to be with him? tokoyami tried to say no as politely as possible, but as he did, something inside him just shattered. there was nothing to love about him that he could see. tokoyami fumikage feels that he’s incapable of being loved.

HITOSHI SHINSOU couldn’t bear to see your face when everything crashed and burned. and he didn’t want anything to fall apart. because as it seems, no matter what he does, he still feels like a monster. it’s undeniable. even when his entire life was set to be a hero people could look up to– hitoshi still didn’t know what to do. and he was willing to give up a relationship to work on that first, stuck in the mindset that he could only prioritize one thing. hitoshi shinsou just can’t find balance.

IZUKU MIDORIYA couldn’t handle the stress of knowing that someone else was counting on him. it wasn’t much of a big reason, really– but he felt that he just didn’t have time for a relationship. he let the phrase, i don’t have time fill his head. so even if he had finished everything, his hero days were over, and everything was gone, izuku still would have stayed in the mindset: i don’t have time for this. izuku midoriya tries to cover up his feelings.

KATSUKI BAKUGOU was lying when he said he didn’t have time for you. unlike midoriya, who’s telling a bit more of a truth, katsuki is playing a full-on lie– he loves you. oh boy. he doesn’t fall for anyone, but if he falls for you, you must have done something– because the reason why he rejected you, deep down, no matter how much he tries to forget you, it’s because he’s afraid of hurting you. he’s afraid of the rejection. he’s afraid of how things are going to go, how it’s going to hurt his hero career– katsuki bakugou is afraid of love.

HANTA SERO wouldn’t reject you in a million years. he wants to be kind to everyone, show him what he stands for and believes– except love, when he’s struggling with loving himself first, what else was there to do? there were so many people that he wanted to help, but so little he had for himself, from trying not to hate himself for being near the bottom of the class, to not having a flashier quirk like everyone else. hanta sero can’t see why he’s lovable.

TENYA IIDA doesn’t understand love. he’s seen people express it, he’s seen people get along, he’s seen all of it– and as the class rep, he feels that he needs to be able to show everyone to his best ability what he’s capable of. except deep down, somewhere inside him, he feels that love is something wretched and terrible. why was it a thing when it only caused unnecessary heartbreak? what was the point of it if you loved and gave, only to lose them in the end? (this is also definitely linked with tensei in the hosu city accident.) tenya iida doesn’t understand love.

SHOUTO TODOROKI doesn’t want to be in chains– or that’s what he believed, at least. a lot of people talk about putting him in hundreds of romantic relationships at school– but he’s never really resonated with any of it. realitsically, shouto’s defintion of love, the way he sees it all, has been twisted and deformed into something that he can’t bear to understand. after seeing his parents fight, calling it love and watching his family spiral– shouto todoroki sees love as faded and dull.

DENKI KAMINARI tries to love you. he really, really does. he tries to learn how to love you, but something just isn’t clicking. was it that you weren’t putting in the effort? no, you were. was it that he just felt out of place? no, he had friends to help him. so… what was it? there were days where he felt that he could never measure up to anyone else. everyone was so ahead, so strong, which such amazing quirks and abilities. he felt that he wasn’t good enough– denki kaminari can’t love himself.
