Connecting Back to December to Enchanted and Dear John

Popular lore among gaylores regarding muse discourse on Back to December is that it's about Liz and Dear John is about Emily. I, however, have some reservations due to inconsistencies. Many fans are quick to lump songs and muses according to the public narrative and whether it's about love or heartbreak. For me, some heartbreak songs seem to be talking about different people or convey different messages. Breathe and Dear John are two very different songs, while Dear John tells us a story of a manipulative person playing with the speaker's heart, in Breathe the speaker sounds regretful and apologetic. Even the hidden message says the same:

That is why I think whoever she's talking about in Dear John, IBYTAM, and WANEGBT are the same person.

So, what made me think that Back to December and Enchanted are connected?

where she supposedly met Adam Young (Owl City) and wrote the song and said she wants to be there front row

During that trip Taylor was mostly alone, it was in the middle of the tour, she came early and stayed for a while watching Karlie's Tommy Hilfiger NYFW so her other bandmates like Liz was not with her that time.

Now it could just be Taylor exercising her artistic flexibility but I believe that Taylor is a songwriter first before singer/performer that's why we have the song, Dear Reader. She wants us to read what she's trying to say, so I don't treat all her lines as a metaphor or red herring because I believe she's very aware of what she's saying in her songs.

But this is also just me trying to weave a story through her songs that makes sense in my mind.

So, what happened?

Again, Taylor told us that she and Karlie met way earlier than what the public narrative was, and that could be the reason for the instant sizzling chemistry we saw in 2013 and why Taylor moved to the opposite coast 2 months after meeting Karlie.

Her songs during this time can be described as hopefuly, like a fairytale but also with smidges of heartbreak, etc. and if we think that Style is a Kaylor song then we can say that they had a lot of ups and downs especially the early years, and i think this is one of them.

Both of them are busy travelling all over the world, with Taylor and her world tour and Karlie's first year as most photographed model and they might have made the effort to spend time and travel to see each other but of course distance and lack of time can be an issue.

Anyway, in September Taylor went to the VMAs and spent her break in NYC - wrote Enchanted, then went back touring. in December she was photographed partying with Julianne Hough

And JH is not that much older than Taylor but she was 19 at that time and the song Dear John talks about her being too young for manipulative, hot/cold, pull and push. But maybe that kind of behavior also brought excitement however it wasn't long-lasting.

Since I believe that DJ and IBYTAM talks about the same person and it talks about someone who grew up rich which none of the others potential muses are (Emily, Liz, Dianna, Karllie) except for possible JH whose father is a Congressman and was born in a very tiny town called Orem, Utah. At 10, her and her brother were sent to London to study. Her favorite band is Imagine Dragons, an indie band.

She wrote Dear John in February 2010, I assume this was when she realized how toxic the relationship was. She then wrote Back to December in March 2010 after having lunch with Taylor Lautner in NYC (a coincidence). She also shot the music video in New York

this line here makes me think this is not about Liz since they are working together and are even considered roommates. So it's someone who she has not seen for a while.

Again this tracks one of the busiest period of Karlie's life jetting off from one place to another because she was everybody'a muae.

this bike also reminds me of Begin Again and I think Taylor put that there for a reason.

So these were my rambling thoughts on how these songs are connected, again, no proof but all feelings. :D

My musings/realizations

Many of the songs in Red cannot be about Dianna since a lot of them were written before they met, it's possible they met earlier but we also have to take into consideration Lea/Dianna timeline since they seem like they were serious with Dianna moved in with Lea

I feel like Julianne Hough had a bigger role in Taylor's early life, some lyrics seem to describe her particularly I Bet You Think About Me

Liz going to Eras on 8/3 was sus - side: she reposted @taylorklosscomeout138's post (with all the gaylor and kaylor tags)

It's good to look at Liz's discography too, she seems to be talking about Taylor and according to her lyrics that she fell for the other person esp Nothing Personal and H8u and the other person wasn't as serious as they expected

Even though This Love is part of 1989 album it was still written on Oct 2012 which is before the public Kaylor timeline

I am also aware that it could be about several people, but this aims to look at the song from a Kaylor lens and see if we have evidence to back it up

so it could possibly be about them but it could also mean a realization that happened during this trip (sorry, Liz). This trip happened in August 2011, the month after she then wrote Red and several songs that would be in the album

Again this was written Oct 17, 2012, I would say that if it was about Liz and she was so emotional and happy about that love coming back maybe she would be inspired to write it in 2011 and not more than a year after. but who knows

so for the Kaylor stuff, Karlie posted this 4 months before Taylor wrote the song

I sometimes connect Betty and HYGTG with what happened in 2011

Where in August 2011 Taylor went on a trip with Liz and maybe had some realizations during that time. She crashed Karlie's party in September and attended the fashion show and even said I love Karlie Kloss in her first US Vogue feature (which was only published in June). Karlie, maybe had enough and told her to go fuck herself but maybe realized how serious Tay was only in January but then Taylor already had some entanglements etc

So after realizing in Jan that she maybe still had a chance and decided to go for it (slowly, idk). just conneting the 'high tide' line with the long six months here.

And let's remember that Josh and Karlie supposedly met in June 2012 and tend to celebrate that anniversary however it could also be viewed as Karlie and Taylor rekindling

remember when Karlie posted the wrong number of years they were together? that was funny

aside from this we have several lyric parallels for songs that we've known as Kaylor songs

I mean who else is she talking about? not only did Karlie refer to herself several times as a giraffe plus the taymoji of a female giraffe

Taylor herself has called Karlie during their BBF interview

I have a theory that Betty happened in 2011 when she took that trip with Liz in August and so this line could be about the same thing

Whispers

I’ve been thinking a lot about the theme of whispering in Taylor Swift’s lyrics, as ‘whisper’ is used repeatedly, album after album (36 times total).

I first noticed the connection of present day Taylor speaking to her muse in imgonnagetyouback the same way that she does in Enchanted.

This got me thinking about when it was that Taylor actually met Karlie, which if you do a deep dive into the lore as @sophietv did, you can see that it was likely in 2008. Enchanted was released in 2010.

Then there’s the connotation of whispering about a secret love, a forbidden love. It continues throughout Taylor’s work, a constant struggle to be with the one she cannot.

There are references to shared, secretive moments, whispered confessions. She’s with her lover in the dark, hidden away from public sight. Her true identity is concealed.

The connections, or Konnections rather, are so strong. When you peel back the layers of each album, you notice the continuity of themes and a singular muse in Taylor’s work. Her truth is clear. Her muse is undeniable.

Woke up to Tayliar at it again so I'm here to make it very clear that "Lucy" is NOT Lucy Dacus. Lucy refers to Lucy Simon, Carly Simon's sister. We all know Karlie is named after Carly Simon, so who does that make Lucy? Karlie's sister, Kimby Kloss.

If you don't believe me that Carly Simon, Lucy Simon, and James are entirely relevant to TTPD, here is some concrete proof. TTPD released on April 19th, you know what else came out on exactly April 19th in 2016? Taylor's 73 questions with Vogue interview where she said that her favorite song lyric was "I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee" from You're So Vain by Carly Simon and then she made this lyric the visual ending of the KARma MV. Right after the Carly Simon comment she filmed the iconic "You should take her to Big Sur" scene before walking back in where you can see photos of her and Karlie framed on the shelf. .....on April 19th. It is undeniably connected.

Now I'm going to back this up with the HEAPS of evidence that majority of TTPD is through the lens of Karlie and Taylor being the reimagined do-over of Carly Simon and her exes James Taylor/James Hart. You're going to want to take a seat for this one.

Lucy was in a sister musical duo with Carly Simon and guess what the genre of music was? Folk. Hold onto that thought about Taylor being James in Folklore because she was named after James Taylor, that's important. Also keep in mind Betty is short for Elizabeth, tying Betty to Karlie/Carly.

Lucy Simon is best known for her work as a composer in the musical The Secret Garden. Sound familiar? It should, and it's from the song of Taylor's that puts this puzzle together.

I hate it here starts off with the lyric "tell me something awful, like you are a poet, trapped inside the body of a finance guy." And then goes on to say "I hate it here so I will go to Secret Gardens in my mind".

Now remember how I mentioned Carly Simon had 2 James exes? Sure everyone knows about James Taylor, but what we all looked passed for so long was Carly's second husband, James Hart. And when you look him up, you find something that matches that prior lyric a little.. all too well.

James Hart also known as Jim, was a closested gay poet who worked as an insurance salesman and he did not come out as gay until 20 years into his marriage with Carly Simon. In other words, James Hart was a poet trapped inside the body of a finance guy......

Taylor is James Hart. And this was the James she named herself after in Folklore, not James Taylor. She has metaphorically been James Hart majority of her discography, and she told us in Lover.

Remember how I said James Hart remained closeted for a total of 20 years of marriage to Carly Simon? In Daylight, Taylor says "I've been sleeping so long in a 20 year dark night, and now I see daylight"

This is where we pivot back to the James Taylor of it all because it is important to note that Carly Simon and James Taylor's wedding anniversary is on the first day of Daylight Savings being over, Nov 3rd.

On Nov 3rd 2024, exactly 38 minutes before Daylight Savings ended and after Taylor just played "The Prophecy x This Love" and Maroon x Cowboy Like Me... Karlie posted herself at a WEDDING with MAROON nails in broad DAYLIGHT despite it being 1:22am Central, doing the TTPD peace sign.

You seriously can't make this up.

Daylight Savings ending meant the clocks went back, like going back in time, to change the Prophecy. Now Taylor explains the Prophecy as being destined to not end up with her one true love. And she mashed it with "this love came BACK to me". Which is the entire premise of The Alchemy with lyrics like "making a comeback to where I belong, your heart said it's STILL reserved for me."

And the final piece of evidence that this story of TTPD is told through the reimagined lens of Carly Simon / both James is in The Alchemy. Because the alchemy IS what undoes The Prophecy.

In The Alchemy Taylor says "he jokes that it's her*in but this time with an e." , and many fans have struggled to understand what this lyric refers to... but it is very obvious for those who have paid attention to her use of Carly Simon and James Taylor.

So now we turn to the question, WHY did Carly Simon and James Taylor split in the first place? I'll let you read.

Meaning when you put everything together, the overarching message is that THIS time it was different, THIS time their love came back to them, because the person named after Carly Simon, and the person named after James Taylor, DID end up together in the end. Changing "the prophecy" that destined their love to fail in the same way that Carly and James did.

Also the "heroine" part to the joke is because in this version they are both women.

And it all goes back to Red with Begin Again. Because who would she be talking about that had as many James Taylor records as her, if not the woman who was quite literally named after Carly Simon?

I wonder if she ever gave us any sign that Begin Again was about Karlie.... oh wait.

In the Begin Again MV you can see a CAR license plate in the background, and it literally has Karlie's full name and birth year in code.

Illuminating: Style and its obvious clues

Opinions have been varied on who Style is about, obviously many claim it's about Harry Styles because of their relationship, as well as Dianna because of her James Dean photoshoot.

Even though I knew of Karlie's James Dean photoshoot on Dec 2012, I was still on the fence since the lyrics is talking about the cycle of intense love, crashing down, and coming back to the same person. So if they just met, how can this be about her, right?

However, since Taylor's clues have pointed to the timeline being a public narrative, such as:

First introduced by Bevan with Emma Stone in April 27 2008

Karlie on magazine mentions meeting and talking at the Met 2011 and baking dates

Mentioned Karlie unprompted on her 1st US Vogue Cover (does she do that a lot on print?)

released songs from the rep album such as timeless (confirmed single) and ICSY (sonically/lyrically according to critics) under Speak Now vault (screenshot below)

Karlie wearing an Enchanted gem on her bracelet (come on, how many songs do you have and you picked Enchanted?)

I am inclined to believe they have met longer than the public knows.

Clue # 1 - Style was written and recorded by Feb 19, 2014 while Dianna's InStyle magazine was Feb 2014 and Karlie's was Dec 2012. Not definitive but it's a start.

Clue #2 - might be the most obvious one yet and it's in the lyrics

"You got that long hair, slicked back, white T-shirt"

Both had the slicked back hair, only Karlie has worn a white t-shirt.

Clue #3 - "And I got that red lip classic thing that you like"

from Vogue 73 questions - she rarely wears red but sure it's favorite

Clue #4 - Walking to Style during VSFS 2014 as the King and Queen of chess and Taylor recreating this moment every eras tour?

A few times in between Karlie was allegedly with Leigh or Toni while Taylor we know has had a few flings as well.

Lyric parallels

"So it goes" is such an iconic line for them and I believe that Taylor has purposely made it a title in one of the rep songs for a reason

There are 13 "so it goes" in the song including the title

"'round and 'round" - While the YAIL reference sounds a perfect callback to the 1st VSFS it could also refer to them circling each other, chasing each other like cat and mouse (Paper Rings), being on different sides of Atlantic (Come back, be Here)

and how many times have we heard Karlie with the phrase "never go(es) out of style"? - this year alone she said it twice while being interviewed.

Starting the surprise songs on tour with mirrorball and ending it with The Manuscript. Opening every night of the tour with a speech about how the songs aren’t about her life anymore and instead about the fans. An entire tour where she gave everything she had to the fans. Truly a mirrorball on full display. Even added a whole new section to the tour part of the way through that includes a meta song that is about performing while she’s shattered in a million pieces. Performance art.

Tour of the century indeed. And using Mirrorball as the song to encapsulate it was truly a great choice. This was for the fans through and through.
