She squinted a bit as Asher led her out of the labyrinth, the sun shining brightly overhead. The door to the maze was different than the one she had been pushed through, this one facing the valley and mountains in the distance rather than the coast and the sea beyond. Asher’s hand curled around her own and she looked up at him, giving him a small, kind smile that he returned. There was a village not too far from where they were and they started towards it, her hand still in his.

“Asher, my boy!” Came the shout and an older man greeted them at the edge of the village, his smile wide and genuine. He went to them and pulled Asher down, kissing him on his cheeks in greeting.

“This is Carlo,” Asher said and he introduced them, Carlo giving her a smile that instantly put her at ease.

“Another one?” He asked and Asher nodded. “Come, come! We’re glad to have you!” He put his arm around her shoulder and started leading her away, her hand slipping from Asher’s. Carlo started telling her about the village but she was barely listening, looking over her shoulder at Asher as he watched them go before turning and walking away back towards the labyrinth.

Weeks and months passed since she joined the village. Her talent at fishing was worthless in a community surrounded by mountains, but her skills at weaving and as a seamstress helped her settle in quickly, many of the others coming to her for shawls or other pieces of clothing. She hadn’t seen Asher since that day, but she could see the labyrinth in the distance.

This is a story that has been knocking around in my head for quite a long time, and it’s going to be a very dark story. It will include domestic violence, murder, suicide, alcoholism, drug addiction, child neglect, child abuse, as well as heavy references to sexual abuse. (However, there will not be any scenes in which sexual abuse occurs apart from one scene in which a groping happens briefly; there will only be mentions of the abuse before or after the fact or during a character’s spoken word narrative. I do not write non-con under any circumstances.)

Each chapter will have content warnings at the top of the fic and will be tagged liberally. I want to let my readers know what’s coming so that you’re not blindsided by a fic that has extremely heavy subject matter and could potentially contain serious triggers for many of my readers, so if any of this is hard for you to read, feel free to steer clear. A deep voice sounded out to Holly’s right, making her jump out of her seat a little. She turned, startled, and saw an orc, far larger than her but not nearly as big as others she’d seen, carrying a stack of books separated into two distinct piles.

“I’d like to return these, check these three out, and purchase this one, if I could,” He said in a pleasant tone. Unlike most orcs she knew, his hair wasn’t long and braided, but cut shortish around his shoulders and had a medium curl to it. It was also dyed royal blue and had at least half an inch of brown roots showing where it parted in the middle.

He was due back at work soon, so he gave her a cursory tour of the house, showing her where everything was and writing his numbers by the phone so she could call if there was an emergency. She really needed to get a cell phone. There was a rule against them at home, but she doubted Ravadhi would have any such rules.

“This was my parent’s house,” He said. “It was supposed to go to my sister, but since I was the only kid left, it defaulted to me. The bank took charge of it until I got back to town, but they didn’t keep up with it well. People broke in and gutted the place, and I had to chase out a bunch of squatters when I first got here. It took me three months to get the lower floor even partly livable. I spent days cleaning and replacing all the wiring and appliances. I haven’t even started on the second floor, so if you go up there, be careful. I had to dip into my college money to get everything fixed. That’s why I took the third job.”

She waited in the line anxiously, her fist clenched around the keys that Tonri had given her and her chest tight.

“I can help the next guest,” The teller called. Holly knew him distantly from school, he was a Ratfolk man name was Auro. The two of them hadn’t been friends or really even spoke to each other, but like everyone at school, he knew who she and her dad was, and speculated along with everyone else. Despite that, he hadn’t ever bullied her or ignored her existence out of guilt.
