"Bury My Mother Pale and Slight (Myla's Song)" - Amalgemotion
A little bit of Hollow Knight in your Star Wars
I wanted something simple, yet emotional. I think i like it. It was a bit difficult to distribute the characters among the verses. Some fit perfectly, while others have to be interpreted. Like, "the lady, lovely and pale" suited Padme well too, but i choose "the writer" because of, well, a broken heart (i guess you can interpret the senator as a writer, in some sense?). "The sage and his sons all three" was also good for Yoda and his lineage (Dooku, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan). That's why I didn't take the last verse, because I couldn't find suitable characters for it (you can write your own ideas if you want).
But otherwise, I like the result.
I would have been a lot more okay with the way Cinta died if killing off black and brown characters for the sake of the development of white characters weren't already a pattern for Andor.
I see the tragic sort of irony in the fact that Cinta seems almost invincible in the face of danger from the Empire— she's so alert and competent and ready for anything— of course it could only be an accident that she wouldn't see coming. And I see the interest in the concept of there being a death on this mission not because of the Imperial crackdown the group was afraid of, but because a green kid could only see that outside danger instead of the even more likely dangers of within-group panic and disorganization.
But it all rings hollow when over and over and over, the writers of Andor kill off darker-skinned characters just so the lighter-skinned ones can have their character development moments. Taramyn and Gorn dying first and fastest at Aldhani, Birnok being introduced just to help Cassian plan before he's killed off immediately so Kino and Melshi can get their moments instead. Then tossing Nurchi in there just to die just because, I guess. The way Clem is mostly there for his death to be a catalyst to Maarva and Cassian.
And so all I can think about watching this scene is wow, what a surprise, we killed off the brown girlfriend so the white one can have her moment of tragedy and eloquent monologue. It makes me furious, it makes me sad, it makes me bitter and resentful that this just keeps happening and happening in a show where I KNOW the writers are capable of doing better and yet they CHOOSE not to every. single. time.

genevieve o'reilly's performance as mon mothma is, quite possibly, my favorite performance in all of star wars. she has brought such life and depth to this iconic character, who, when she first appeared in the original trilogy, hardly existed at all. genevieve o'reilly has been playing this character for two decades now, and before andor, she had been given crumbs, and those crumbs were largley cut, and still, even then, she brought such incredible grace and power to this role. it's truly remarkable, and she deserves all the praise in the world
theres this thing about palpatine that people often leave out and its that hes not only clever, the cast of PT and OT is populated with clever characters who struggle to get anywhere, but somehow in a world ravaged by the plague of emotional incompetence, hes somehow the only one who has ever glimpsed the dreaded feelings wheel. he understands the power of a growth mindset, he understands affirmations, hes the only one making connections such as bad childhood -> struggling to be a stable adult. never forget that the jedi council could literally hear anakin say "i burn like a sun on the inside and also if i dont recklessly endanger my own life the demons will get me" and theyre like hmm sounds like someone is a little bored, sounds like something to do would sort you out. you wanna have a mission??? you wanna have a mission?? here, have a mission! good boy, enjoy your first kill! and then 10 years later the grand entrance of darth vader is a fucking m night shyamalan plot twist to them. meanwhile palpatine zeroed in on the cause and effect of every vulnerability and intrusive thought anakin has ever had from the beginning. people say all the time the jedi practice [insert therapy practice] but really, its palpatine. the key to palpatine tho is that he uses this for evil. hes doing evil cbt out there. "i am capable of choosing evil" "my master 100% hates me for real" "the judgemental eye of my superiors is upon me at all times" "every attempt at surpassing the circle of violence & death i was born into will crumble to dust in my hands" "people cannot be reasoned with and are inherently selfish" are a few select s. palpatine approved affirmations you can practice by yourself!! each time he and anakin had a meeting (a session if you will) he immediately made him talk about whats going on in his life and how that makes him feel and then skillfully made it worse. he had anakin doing sithium when he should have been doing lithium but you gotta account that even doing this kinda twisting on purpose still means he needed a good understanding of how people work to begin with. in the PT everyone is trying to ignore the small, petty day to day issues they have because not being strongly affected is the easiest way to be lawfully good while palpatine remains the one singular person comprehending that those things can build up and thats why he wins. hes better at building distrust than the jedi are at building trust precisely because he works WITH feelings not against them. and THEN once hes consistently validated those feelings his advice will be to kill some kids about it
