And that's on self-sabatoge šš
Thinking about the destruction of Phantom and Christineās relationship, growing up I thought it was Christine not being interested in the Phantom romantically/sexually and the Phantom imagining things between them.
But now, after re-watching Poto 25 and seeing it on Broadway again, their fall out is literally on the Phantom. Every time.
Like, Christine is evidently interested in him and seems psyched that heās a real guy vs an āangelā (the lyrics even mention she knew that he could be a man and wished for it). But Erikās (understandable) lack of self esteem make this fly right over his head, thinking he still has to put on theatrics to get her interest. He doesnāt think heāll be accepted as he is, even with the mask.
And then when she takes off his mask (out of curiosity and wanting to get to know him better), thereās the clear breach of trust, obviously. But Erik is so afraid to apologize for his outburst and show his vulnerability, and come to an understanding with Christine, that he cops out and just takes her back upstairs without even wondering if she wanted to figure something out.
After this itās all the threats and theatrics against the theatre leading to Bouquetās death, which is (rightfully) Christineās breaking point and puts her in the arms of Raoul. Raoul didnāt even seem on her mind as an option until shit goes left. And once again the Phantom canāt seem to recognize how he caused this drift.
The Phantom couldāve already been Christineās choice, but his inferiority-superiority complex has him unable to trust her or himself. And it causes their split. He causes his own downfall and he doesnāt even know it. Or maybe he does, and itās on purpose because he always expects himself to be the monster.

people writing smut always forget how hard it is to leave a hickey on someone unless, for some reason, your skin is like insanely easy to bruise, which is usually due to taking certain medications, such as blood thinners or steroids, or bc of vitamin deficiencies, a low platelet count, or you have some chronic conditions. they be like "leaving a trail of hickeys uwu" and i'm just like. wife fucking chewed on my inner thigh bc i wanted to see if it'll bruise for like solid 2 mins to the point of it like. really hurting and i still only BARELY had a hickey. that disappeared the next day. like. you ain't making someone purple by nipping on their skin asdsadjifhd pls stop

Something that makes me so emotional about book Elphaba is the incredibly subtle ways she shows her love for Glinda, so on par with Elphabaās character and so subtle that if you blink you miss it.
Elphaba kisses Glinda on the carriage, thatās explicit, but before that she nearly misses it because she was buying food. For Glinda. Elphaba knew very well she wasnāt going back to Shiz that day, yet she still bought Glinda food with money she definitely needed for herself just so that Glinda wouldnāt be hungry on the way home.
Then you have the way she visits Saint Glindaās shrine, Glindaās namesake. Elphaba is not religious whatsoever, sheās very vitriolic towards the idea of religion in the book, yet she visits a Unionist shrine of all places that just happens to have statues of her ābest friendāsā namesake.
She also asks the most questions of all about Glinda when Fiyero visits her, and asks about her first to add to that. Elphaba wants to know the most about Glinda. More than her father, Nessarose, Shell, the people who are her family (said loosely). More than even Fiyero, and heās sitting right in front of her. She couldnāt care less about Fiyeroās wife yet is thoroughly offended when she finds out Glinda āonlyā married a baronet.
When Fiyero asks if Elphaba is married, she says āyes, but not to a manā and breaks down in tears. In the book water does hurt Elphaba, including her tears, so it stands to reason she doesnāt cry often. But the thought of being āmarriedā to someone that isnāt there, that she canāt be with, is enough to cause her to harm herself even if itās inadvertently. It would make sense for it to be Glinda, for Glinda is the only person to ever have even brought her close to tears.
And finally, this one is just silly, but the way Fiyero makes a comment on how Elphaba didnāt bleed the first time they have sex and the way she just blows him off by saying āwell Iām not as virginal as you thinkā one hundred percent means Glinda was her first time.
I also do think that Elphaba really does love Fiyero, and I do mean romantically. But in the end heās still just a distraction, a balm for the fact that the one person Elphaba truly wants is the person she canāt have. And that person is Glinda.
