I totally get people’s uncomfortableness with Ramin hc the Phantom as autistic while seemingly being neurotypical (Or at least from what we know, that’s his personal journey if anything’s changed). I can empathize with the frustration of hc these villainous characters as neurodivergent.

I will say though, his portrayal as Erik has consistently stuck with me. His hands, his facial expressions, the way he moves and reacts to overstimulating situations. Like he is me. I too make puppy dog eyes and stim with my fingers. I too want to upstage everyone at an event and also not speak to anyone. I too am a sexy person of color with an angelic voice. I too want to make Christine Daaé my wife.

I might be in the unpopular group of enjoying neurodivergent coded/canon anti-heroes and villains (Entrapta, Erik, Spinel). For me I don’t see their actions as tied to their “neurodivergence” but rather understandable retaliation against the way they’ve been marginalized. Like, I don’t know, I love the fantasy/fiction of neurodivergent people causing chaos for the people and system that’s thrown them away. How are we surprised that those who’ve been dehumanized don’t see value in the lives of others. Like why should they be the bigger person?

Lucifer, walking towards y/n very fast (too graceful to run): “Angel, darling, my love, my heart- there’s a spider in the room-“

Y/n, confused: “okay.. what do you want me to do?”

Lucifer, now hyperventilating: “KILL IT!? I’m sorry I’m sorry. Kill it, please. Get rid of that thing.”

Y/n, holding back their laughter: “you’re the literal devil.. and you’re scared of a spider?”

Lucifer, about to cry: “JUST KILL IT. YOU CAN BULLY ME LATER.”

Thinking about the destruction of Phantom and Christine’s relationship, growing up I thought it was Christine not being interested in the Phantom romantically/sexually and the Phantom imagining things between them.

But now, after re-watching Poto 25 and seeing it on Broadway again, their fall out is literally on the Phantom. Every time.

Like, Christine is evidently interested in him and seems psyched that he’s a real guy vs an “angel” (the lyrics even mention she knew that he could be a man and wished for it). But Erik’s (understandable) lack of self esteem make this fly right over his head, thinking he still has to put on theatrics to get her interest. He doesn’t think he’ll be accepted as he is, even with the mask.

And then when she takes off his mask (out of curiosity and wanting to get to know him better), there’s the clear breach of trust, obviously. But Erik is so afraid to apologize for his outburst and show his vulnerability, and come to an understanding with Christine, that he cops out and just takes her back upstairs without even wondering if she wanted to figure something out.

After this it’s all the threats and theatrics against the theatre leading to Bouquet’s death, which is (rightfully) Christine’s breaking point and puts her in the arms of Raoul. Raoul didn’t even seem on her mind as an option until shit goes left. And once again the Phantom can’t seem to recognize how he caused this drift.

The Phantom could’ve already been Christine’s choice, but his inferiority-superiority complex has him unable to trust her or himself. And it causes their split. He causes his own downfall and he doesn’t even know it. Or maybe he does, and it’s on purpose because he always expects himself to be the monster.
