The genral gist of the story:
it takes place in what in the equivalent of the 2020’s for us, however its marked as 5223 pa (post awarness) for them, and billions and billions of years after human society was destroyed by ▇▇▇ ▇▇▇▇▇.
The story follows the six main characters: Ava(15), Umbra(15), Sam(16), Grace(16), Kevin(15), and Scrape(14).
(Almost) all of them have some sort of relevance, and reason they’re important.
In the world they live in there’s an increasingly growing threat, known as “The Despair” this is an an anomaly that causes a the creation of “Despairlings.” (the silly name has infact, lead to people not taking it seriously.) These “Despairlings” are technically a form of animals, however they’re closer to monsters, they’re often tall, beastly, creatures, that only know how to hunt and kill. While it’s not fully certain what causes this “Despair”, the most common theory is that it stems from suffering and negativity, hence the name, this theory is based off two things:
1. Where they’re often seen forming.
These beasts always start in a place of misery, burnt down houses, crime scenes, funerals, etc. They never form anywhere postive, while they sometimes may move to somewhere where postive emotions are being experienced, they never form there.
2. How they behave.
While at first it was theorised that they act on pure survival instincts, this has been debunked, as, while yes, they do hunt, it doesn’t seem like it’s done for food, as they’ll often leave the bdoies, rather than eating them, they don’t just kill what they need for food, or what they deem as a threat, no, they kill anything. When it comes to intelligence species, they’ll only kill people who are either, in groups, or, on their own, but miserable.
These patterns have lead to the current theory that they feed off of suffering, not food.
The fact that they’re becoming more frequent is a concern, and the reason for this is unknown, however there are some scraps of proof that the government had been ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ in the past, but this is mostly just a conspiracy theory.
The current thoughts on why is that people are just suffering more, but what the governments have been saying is that there’s been groups of terror groups going out of their way to generate Despairlings. They claim to have evidence of this, but they refuse to release it.
Ava, Grace, Umbra, and Kevin are all in a, questionablly legal, group, that makes its goal to prevent The Despair from getting out of hand, however, sometimes…it feels like there might be something…deeper to it… it’s probably nothing though…

Headcanon that Daisy just. Always wears the Deepdean tie. Like, 24/7 "in honour of Deepdean"
(TWs for wartime history ofc)
Hazel is going to work at Bletchely Park, which at the time was a workplace for british code-crackers. Daisy mentions in the Puzzle book that "theres no such thing as an extremely complex puggling machine that spews hundreds of seemingly nonsense words" which lines up pretty accuratley with the description of the Enigma Machine, a messaging device used to send top secret messages such as invasion orders, landing plans, etc. It was so important that if a german sub was sunk the captain was under strict orders to throw the device into the ocean so that the Allies couldn't get their hands on it and possibly decode the thing. Eventually one of rhe machines was retrieved in November of 1941, and the cracking of the device lines up almost perfectly with the time that Ministry 3 is set, December 1941.
It could be possible that Daisy and hAzel end up working on cracking the Enigma, and discovering all the hidden messages.
BUT THE THING IS when the enigma was cracked and all the massages were uncovered they could not be announced to the public because the Axis powers would know that their device had been decoded, so multiple invasions and attacks occurred that the British KNEW ABOUT but couldn't do a thing about. One of these attacks, was the Invasion of Hong Kong, December 1941.
(OUGH THE ANGST IM IMAGINING IS HEARTBREAKING)
