if your child is crying that you took their phone, if your child is sad that you took their phone, don't. especially if they have depression or any mental illness, don't. no, you don't discipline them by this, you won't achieve anything. you won't achieve anything if you look through their phone, you're harming PRIVACY. They might have things in there that they were not ready to tell yet, might have things in there that they don't want to tell you and you have to respect that. If you don't respect your child, don't expect respect from them either.
