Another fun fact: crocodiles and alligators will climb surfaces. If you go to a reptile zoo and see the metal mesh curve upwards, that's because the crocs and gators would otherwise be able to climb right up the mesh and get out. They can also use their massive tail to propel themselves out of the water like really slow death missiles.

They're amazing creatures.

Crocodiles swim way faster than you think.

HELL YES A POST ABOUT CROCS! Utan is a sweetheart, and they're all machines of PURE POWER and DEATH. One of these hardcore sonofabitches hunts *hippos*, those territorial murder tanks that anyone with the slightest bit of knowledge about gives a wide berth (they are fast enough to catch up to you and they give zero fucks about your well being). AND wonderful physics on these good crocs as they get bigger in size! What's not to love?

I can’t stop thinking about crocodiles for some reason so here’s some cool pictures I found of probably the second largest one in captivity, his name is Utan:

isn’t he beautiful

listen to the SOUND when he bites

and that’s not even a real power bite, that’s mostly just heavy bone falling on heavy bone from his jaws and the air rushing out from between them

Hey, did you change your Discord name and picture recently? If this is just a Halloween joke, please say so, a lot of us are worried you got hacked.

hi anon! I did in fact change my avatar and username for a little halloween fun, and stayed silent because I wanted to see people's reaction. Not a lot of people responded to it, so I figured most folks either didn't notice or weren't really into it. I had no idea people thought I got hacked! Thank you for letting me know! Rest assured, I haven't clicked any suspicious links (although do be careful, another false Discord Nitro phishing link is making the rounds again) or gotten hacked.

My avatar/nickname will change again for Halloween night (either the 30th or the 31st, possibly both days) and after that I will revert back to my usual name/avatar combo.

Thank you again for letting me know! I apologize for causing unintentional fretting, it's not my intention to worry you folks. I'll try to make it more obvious when I'm goofing around. And thank you for caring about me, it warms my heart <3

Reblogging for the sheer amount of information (and the link inclusion!) in the last post, discussions like these are so fun to see.

Honestly the biggest disappointment I had researching ABC was that medieval authors did not, in fact, see the creatures they were describing and were trying their best to describe them with their limited knowledge while going “what the fuck… what the fuck…”

An excellent way to help others and progress research at the same time!

Want to contribute to citizen science projects?

Yeah? Then have I got a list for you!

Places to find citizen science projects:

NASA’s Citizen Science section – NASA maintains a page here with links to all their citizen science projects and initiatives—and they have a LOT. All projects are helpfully color-coded by category/domain.

Zooniverse – Very good website, LOTS of projects. “The world’s largest and most popular platform for people-powered research”.

SciStarter – Another good hub for finding projects. SO, SO many projects available!

A list of citizen science projects that have you playing games

Wikipedia

National Geographic – Nat Geo always maintains a list here of a lot of good ones.

This list on Gizmodo that I LOVE, 10/10

Society for Science – Not only do they have a lot of great citizen science projects linked, they also have sections to help you start your own citizen science projects too.

Smithsonian Institution – Come on, who DOESN’T want to help out the SMITHSONIAN?

Citizen science projects with iPhone apps:

iNaturalist – Take pictures of plants, fungi, animals, insects, etc. around you and contribute to scientific data repositories for researchers!

budburst – Help scientists find and monitor plants in your area and improve their research on plant conservation!

eBird – If you love birding or just want to contribute to research on bird populations and migrations, this is the project for you!

Spotteron – There are a LOT of apps for a variety of ongoing projects here, both at global and regional levels.

Globe Observer – Help NASA by providing data from down here on Earth!

Insight – Give scientists data they can use to help understand and save pollinators by snapping pics and tracking ones near you in observations!

River Survey/Ocean Survey apps – The Ocean Cleanup has put out two different apps for helping track the pollution in our water! River Survey asks citizens to help by going to a nearby river and starting to count the plastic they see. Ocean Survey asks anyone who goes out on the ocean to record any plastic debris they spot floating on the ocean.

Have fun, be safe, and happy researching!

Before The Bottom Of Chapter 3 Page 34 Reveals That He Saw Isaac Use His Weather Powers, You Can See

Before the bottom of chapter 3 page 34 reveals that he saw Isaac use his weather powers, you can see him go from his earlier position staring at nothing in particular to focusing on Isaac! Zack's little details are such a nice touch.

This skull looks friendly. It'd be a nice evening to sit by a fire with the skull, a cigar perched in the hole in the teeth, as they told me stories of times gone by in that soft, grandparently drawl one has when they've reached a long life and are content with where they are.

Hot dang, this sounds super fun! Another one I used to do is freerice.com, where you do little grammar puzzles to donate rice to children in impoverished countries.

Cool Tip

If you are like me and always need to be working on something to keep your anxiety under control, during this quarentine why not helping scientists by looking at pictures of some neat penguins? or even galaxies?  There’s this site call Zooniverse, where you can help on scientific projects by analyzing pictures and data!  Right now my favorite project has returned, called Penguin Watch (where yeah, you get to watch penguins, it’s amazing)

Cool Tip

you basically have to analyse photos looking for penguins, their chicks, eggs or even predators and human interaction But there are lots of interesting projects you can help in areas such as biology, physics, history or even art:

Some cool advice from Neil Gaiman

Hi Mr Gaiman, I'm pretty sure your answer is going to be something along the lines of "just write" but, I am having trouble starting on my book. I have plans, I have a path. But my brain is having issues stepping over the threshold as it were. Neurodivergence is a bit shit like that. Is there any advice you could give?

For me, the best thing to do is to persuade my brain that I'm not actually working, that I'm doing stuff that doesn't matter. Look, I'm not even typing. I'm just scribbling down some ideas. With a pencil! And now I'm typing up notes.

Do something that your brain can't stop you doing, whether it's handwriting or dictating or writing on old brown paper bags or big post-it notes.

What’s your fav fic idea, planned or written

In general: someone becoming a spectral. Bonus points if it's from a Near Death Experience since we haven't seen what that looks like in comic yet and not a lot of people have written what it could be! Personally I make it so there's a ghost outside the body but has a tether into the person's heart. If the tether breaks, that's it, the person is dead. The tether will fray slowly on its own and also slowly gain a color. Becoming a spectral through this method depends on how long the person was "dead" for and how much they remember being "dead", although there are outliers for both criteria.

Specifically: I'm not entirely sure! In terms of what makes me happiest when brainstorming ideas for it, I'd say that one of my AUs where Peekaboo and Forge are switched (so that Peekaboo is the one that possesses Johnny in Chapter 4) is always a hoot to think about, since it involves a lot of Peekaboo being very chaotic in a looney toons esque fashion and having a foil in Violet, who's trying to figure out what's up with him and make sense of this odd relationship she now has with both Johnny and Peekaboo. There's also fics I have planned exploring what interactions could happen with Stephen and Isaac, including a few where they kind of sort of become acquaintances. One such fic is in the works now!

Imagine skating around on a frozen lake and just coming across pairs of jaws, halfhazardly spread around the lake, jutting out of the ice. Would you touch them?

I have been using alligators as the base for dragons in a book I am writing. Please make me regret my decision and tell me some cursed facts about them!

contrary to popular belief, american alligators can survive the occasional deep freeze just fine!

I Have Been Using Alligators As The Base For Dragons In A Book I Am Writing. Please Make Me Regret My

they do so by entering a torpor state that’s basically a short-term hibernation, but first they make a big ol’ hole in the ice and stick their face out of it so they can breathe until the thaw comes.

I Have Been Using Alligators As The Base For Dragons In A Book I Am Writing. Please Make Me Regret My

depending on how long the freeze lasts, this may mean that the hole literally freezes shut around their faces, and abruptly the swamp by your house is now a skating rink with built-in pit trap hazards.

I Have Been Using Alligators As The Base For Dragons In A Book I Am Writing. Please Make Me Regret My

don’t worry about them though, they’re fine! as long as they have access to open air, they’ll wake up when the temperature rises again and go back to lurking around pretending to be logs, though they may bonk around disorientedly for a few days afterwards.

I Have Been Using Alligators As The Base For Dragons In A Book I Am Writing. Please Make Me Regret My

“the shit was THAT about??? humans better stop fucking with the climate, I swear.”

overall, the alligators probably weathered the Great Blizzard of ‘21 better than the humans did.

Some of these are inviting, in their own odd way. Some of these faces seem as if the person is turning to you with the words "can you believe what's going on here?" about to leave their lips. The gentleman staring gives off a "sitting on the subway train longingly gazing out the window, thinking of love" vibe.

I fucking hate James Tissot’s paintings because in ALL OF THEM there is ALWAYS someone staring right at you, but it’s not always immediately visible. You just feel watched by this mf. Sometimes the little shit is right there at the centre, but others the bastard is just gazing from the distance, it is CREEPY, my guys

Dragons and unicorns have such variety in designs!

“Dragon” is such a vague category of creature with such a ridiculous diversity of bauplans. It doesn’t matter how big it is or how many legs it has or whether it has wings or not: you can call it a dragon if it is kind of snakey, and/or breathes fire (virtually anything that can breathe fire has the potential to qualify as a dragon).

Case in point, look at all these different things that are dragons:
