when one character brokenly says “i have nothing to offer you” and the other character looks at them with fond exasperation, because there’s nothing else they could want except the gift of their love. that shit gets me.
“the meaning of life is love” if you mean romantic then no, I am walking away from your definition and mind that values romance as the single pillar of life. if instead you mean the devotion of a friend to knowing the recipe of your favourite soup, the never-ending patience of your fingers scratching your pet’s itchy fur in just the perfect spot, the gentleness of the old neighbour tending to flower that will only bloom one year but they think still deserve to have the best care, the child reading a book of its most beloved story to a sibilng. if you mean humanity looking at the world and asking “who are you and how can I love you” and after not getting an answer, inventing poetry and song and science to understand, to adore, to remember. then yes. I walk towards you.
Hey! I’m H*cking Bored
you know what’s wild is that all these crazy standards we hold ourselves to are things that we don’t even value in another person? like i’ve never been like “wow I love that this friend of mine is too proud to ask for help and never complains about their feelings” or “my favorite quality about this friend is that they get straight A’s and never get overwhelmed and has never told me about a problem” or “i love that this friend has never been wrong about anything or slipped up and said something embarrassing once in their life” and yet here we are, pushing ourselves past our limits for and beating ourselves up over slipups of things that our friends probably wouldn’t even rank in the top 50 reasons they like us
The reason "A Silent Voice" works so well is that at no point does the story try to justfiy the fact that Ishida Shouya bullied Nishimiya Shouko.
No excuse about him having a hard home life.
No trying to say that he bullied her as a child because he had a crush on her at the time.
When he himself is bullied later on, the story doesn't use this as a way to nullify the fact that he bullied his classmate in the past.
His remorse is realistic and he starts to feel regret soon after Nishimiya has to switch schools. He feels responsible even though he wasn't the only student who bullied her, even though the teacher was probably the most responsible of all, as he purposefully turned a blind eye to his students' behavior.
Ishida goes out of his way to learn sign language in order to make amends. The story doesn't tell us how long he had spent on learning the language before he found her again. It could have been months, maybe years.
He doesn't feel deserving of Nishimiya's friendship, but she's the one who decides to forgive him, no one pressures her into doing so. And you agree with her decision because of how well Ishida and his redemption is written.
He focuses on making her life better, probably out of a mixture of gratitude and a desire to assuage his guilt.
Nishimiya also feels guilty despite being innocent. She thinks Ishida would be better off without her friendship, believing he's being stigmatized because of her disability. All the while Ishida wants to spend more time with her to make up for his past, and to make her realize she's not at fault.
The story also treats the characters' depression with respect and doesn't really romanticize it. You want these characters to be at peace with themselves, with each other, and with the other people in their lives.
TL;DR
"A Silent Voice" works because it doesn't try to justify the former bully's actions, shows that he feels genuine remorse and is willing to change his behavior of his own accord in order to make ammends, thus making his redemption and his friendship with Nishimiya all the more believable.
I may be butch sometimes but I ALWAYS love the color pink. I will be a butch in a completely fem house. Mark my words.
no my friend, you don't have a crush. you have serious attachment issues and someone is giving you attention.

I based this recipe off of this recipe I found a few years ago and it has gone through a LOT of tweaking, especially in regards to herbs and the like. You can 1000% customize this spell to your heart’s content – especially if you’re not a Norse practitioner like me! I came up with the spell during my undergrad when I was helping organize an academic conference and didn’t have the time to get sick since the conference was a week away and it works wonders!
Ingredients:
2 tbsp. butter (I’d highly recommend my garlic butter protection spell!) ½ an onion (protection, cleansing, absorbing negative energy) ½ c. of celery, chopped (calming) 1 c. of carrots, diced (protection, healing) ½ to 1 lb. of chicken (grounding, healing, protection, strength) 1 ½ c. of vegetable broth, salted 5 c. of chicken broth, salted 1 ½ c. pasta of choice (I use pasta in fun shapes!) ½ tsp. basil (protection, purification, harmony, calm) ½ tsp. oregano (happiness, strength, vitality, energy) ¼ tsp. sage (protection, purification, cleansing) 2-3 sprigs of fresh rosemary (protection, purification, banishing, healing, sleep) Grated ginger to taste; about 1 tsp. (health, prosperity) Sea salt or pink salt to taste (purification, cleansing, banishing, grounding and centering) Pepper to taste (protection, banishing, wards off dark/negative energy) 6+ cloves of garlic, minced; dependent on personal taste (health, prosperity)
Cooking Instructions:
1. Rub salt and pepper into your chicken and throw it into a frying pan with the rest of your butter and cook your chicken. Once it’s finished cooking, let your meat rest and then shred it. 2. As your chicken rests, in a medium to large sized pot, heat up 1 tbsp. butter until it’s mostly melted. Then throw in your onion and your celery and cook them until they’re soft. 3. Add your vegetable and chicken broth into the pot with the celery and onion and add your diced carrots into the broth pot. 4. Add your herbs and wait until your vegetables go soft. 5. After your vegetables soften, put your shredded chicken into the pot along with your desired pasta and the sprigs of rosemary. Cook for about 20 minutes or so (or at least until you reach the desired density of pasta; I prefer mushy noodles when I get sick because my throat swells). 6. After this time, take your herbs that you’ve used and sprinkle the herbs on your soup in the form of the following runes: Ansuz, Sowilo/Sowulo, and Laguz. Ansuz - Good health, harmony, blessings. Sowilo/Sowulo - The sun, life-force, health, victory, wholeness. Laguz - Water, healing power of renewal, life energy. Note: If you don’t work with runes and/or aren’t a Norse practitioner, you can absolutely omit this step OR you can create your own sigil beforehand. If you don’t want to use these specific runes, you can also do your research into what other runes might be beneficial for you! 7. Once you’ve sprinkled on your rune-herbs, you can do a little chant if you so desire. I like to sing the Healing Incantation from Tangled. As you chant or sing, stir your soup, clockwise/sunwise/deosil/doesil to imbue your soup with luck. 8. Consume your soup! I find that this recipe makes enough to last a few days, too!
