DIY Barbie Doll House — Hartley Home So this project started out as “I’m not going to do much… just spray paint some plastic furniture. It’s not going to be fancy or the cutest dollhouse you’ve ever seen…” And ended with me spending two weeks obsessing adding board and batten to walls and making tiny baskets and chandeliers. 1:6 Birch Bark Dresser (2 of 3)

1:6 Birch Bark Dresser (2 of 3)

Cut mat board to fit drawers. Paint edges with acrylic dark brown paint. Glue paper drawer fronts to dry matboard with glue stick.

Wrap rectangle in thin wood grain paper. I printed the birch bark and birch sticks. Attach with glue stick.

Make top from cardboard. Be sure you have an overhang all around the dresser. Wrap in wood grain paper. Attach to base with tacky glue. Add support piece inside to keep its shape.

Attach drawer fronts with tacky glue.

Attach small pieces of stick for drawer pulls.

Attach birch sticks to edges for table legs/trim.

Tip: Do not use tape on the printed paper. Some came off when I removed the tape. I repaired one area with paper and the other area with soft pastels.

Today's project: a MCM esque sideboard based on a couple of pictures I've seen

Today's Project: A MCM Esque Sideboard Based On A Couple Of Pictures I've Seen
Today's Project: A MCM Esque Sideboard Based On A Couple Of Pictures I've Seen

My version:

I think I got the spirit of what I had in my head. I wanted to have wooden doors but the needles kept going through the sides rather than straight down. I will neaten the edges with thin craft sticks. But I like the white with the natural look, but I don't feel like it matches with the other furniture because the wood is black.

Building a versatile room for your bjd pictures.

I posted this in the Granado themed thread on Den of Angels, and I thought I’d add it here too for those who’d like an insight on how I built the “Treasure Room” for this year’s @doll-granado photo contest. Maybe those tricks can help you build your own bjd space for immersive photos: The room I built can be taken down to pieces; Most of it is made of cheap foamcore sheets. - So you have the walls, which are two separate pannels of 5 black foamcore sheets glued together with hot glue. In the photoshoot I simply covered them with fabric to simulate a tapestry. - Then I built two different set of shelves in black foamcore, (foamcore and hot glue are really easy to work with and aren’t expensive.) Those two pieces are the most difficult to store afterward, but depending on what you make as furniture, you can use them to store your own stuff - The practical part of using foamcore is that you can pin stuff in it. This is how I made those little picture frame stick to the wall, the mirror, the unicorn tapestry and the curtain. When you’re done with your shooting, or if you need the space, just unpin everything and put them away. So you have a base set made of foamcore, and by changing the fabric on the wall and the deco around it, you can morph it into many different room design. Now let’s add a Granado face to this post: Funny fact: The two artwork on the right are actual paintings that were stolen and NEVER RECOVERED to this date “Poppy Flowers” by Vincent van Gogh, and “The Concert” by Johannes Vermeer Guess who’s the guilty party? hehehe

Doll of the Day: Legends of Ireland: The Bard Barbie.

Our doll today is The Bard Barbie doll. She was released in 2004 as part of the Legends of Ireland Collection, one of Mattel’s most beautiful Fantasy inspired collections to this day. She is a Limited Edition doll, and one of my favorite dolls in this specific collection. Considering we have a Ireland for our history theme tomorrow (spoiler), I thought she’d fit perfectly.

image

Her dress is one of the loveliest creations that came from Mattel. It’s inspired by Medieval attire (Cotehardie over kirtle), but closer to 19th Century Pre-Raphaelite and Celtic Revivalist art than to actual Medieval clothing. Although it’s not completely historically accurate, it is no doubt gorgeous. As I mentioned before, my favorite kind of Fantasy outfits have some history as inspiration, so she’s just my kind of doll. The make up though… MAC Ireland rather than Medieval Ireland.

Well, now’s the part where I start spiiling the IRL pictures, right? But, I’ve had a minor problem. I was a child when I got this doll, and as a child I was a bit of an iconoclast…

image

So, I might have left this doll a little too much exposed to sunlight (not to mention pool water and all that a child can think of as an adventure) my poor Bard doll’s head has yellowed way too much and there’s no retouching I can do.

Soooo, I did the next best thing: I picked up another doll, dressed her in The Bard’s dress, and voilà! The doll chosen to represent her is a modern fashion doll by Integrity Toys. Her hair has been rerooted (a doll world word for taking the doll’s head off and changing all her hair) in a blonde color that is the closest I have to the original Barbie’s tone. The make up is modern, but it’s softer than some of my other dolls’ makeups. Loose hair isn’t period either, but it works both for Pre-Raphaelite art and for Fantasy, so again, I’ll let it slide.

The harp used in the photoshoot came with the original doll. I was very happy to discover it wasn’t just a prop for the stock photo, and I’m even happier it survived my childhood!

Mattel have done a number of superhero Barbie dolls over the years, but one of the ones that is most interesting to me is the 2006 Superman Returns Lois Lane.

Mattel Have Done A Number Of Superhero Barbie Dolls Over The Years, But One Of The Ones That Is Most

She came with a poster for the film and naturally there was a matching Ken Superman doll released as part of the same set. He also came with a poster, though it was a different poster.

None of that however is what I personally find interesting about the Lois Lane Barbie.

Mattel Have Done A Number Of Superhero Barbie Dolls Over The Years, But One Of The Ones That Is Most

Much like actress Kate Bosworth, the Lois Lane Barbie has heterochromia - specifically, her right eye contains both blue and brown pigment, while her left eye is only blue.

This makes this Barbie relatively unique from a design perspective!

It's Funny How Monster High And Rainbow High Are Suffering From Opposite Problems: MH Makes Too Many
It's Funny How Monster High And Rainbow High Are Suffering From Opposite Problems: MH Makes Too Many

It's funny how Monster High and Rainbow High are suffering from opposite problems: MH makes too many dolls of their characters and RH doesn't make enough dolls of their characters

G3 has only been around for nearly a year and we have had 12 Draculauras in succession with minimal face screening variety meanwhile RH has about 81 characters and a small majority of them have gotten a few more dolls outside of their signature release.

They keep creating more new characters faster than the show can make us give us a rat's ass about the previous wave and it's starting to fatigue them (see series 3 of Shadow High) while MH keeps sticking to same 5 characters and is starting to bore everyone.

Barbie Roberts has an official hometown - the fictional Willows, in Wisconsin.

Barbie Roberts Has An Official Hometown - The Fictional Willows, In Wisconsin.

Originally the backstory was that Barbie, Midge and Ken all hailed from this hometown and attended high school here, however it was later retconned on the official Barbie vlog that Barbie had moved to Malibu as a child, where Ken was her neighbour.

In honour of this, Mattel released the Willows, WI gold label series. Cherry Pie Picnic was the first of these, in 2014, with 6,400 dolls released.

She came with picnic basket and cherry pie accessories.

Homecoming Queen Willows WI Barbie was the second release a year later in 2015, with 5,500 dolls sold.

She has a sash, bouquet of flowers and crown, as well as a poster asking people to vote for her.

Soda Shop Willows WI Barbie, with an ice cream sundae (two spoons!) and a poodle skirt was released in 2016, and was the smallest run with only 4,400 released.

Barbie Roberts Has An Official Hometown - The Fictional Willows, In Wisconsin.

All three dolls are very 50's inspired (in fact the Nifty 50's Great Fashions of the 20th Century Barbie also has a pink poodle skirt!), to represent not just Barbie's hometown but also the era from which she came.
