In 1808, Napoleon, running out of scenic holiday destinations to invade, somehow totally forgot about his neighbor to the south, Spain. So that year he dispatched his troops, kicking off the Peninsular War. Only 20 years old and working as a barmaid in the town of Valdepenas, Juana Galan was not expecting a surge of French soldiers to come storming through her village. But on June 6, that’s exactly what happened. At that time, most of the men were fighting Napoleon’s forces elsewhere in the nation. Juana, unfazed by things like rifles and Frenchmen and French riflemen, began organizing the women in her village to form a trap for the approaching army. When the army arrived, Juana and her friends were ready. They dumped boiling water and oil on the French troops, which by all accounts will instantly take the fight out of pretty much anyone. Then Juana, armed with only a batan, beat back the heavily armed French cavalry with her squad of village women, almost none of whom were armed with guns. The French retreated, giving up on capturing not just Juana’s town but the entire province of La Mancha, leading to ultimate Spanish victory. Today, she is seen in Spain as a national hero, a symbol of resistance, strength, patriotism, feminism and hitting shit with a stick. (x)

Drew Smith - Melee (Fossils: 2007)

You want the truth, I don’t know what’s real You fight me off, I’m still nipping at your heels I could try, but the feeling won’t let go And you, my dear, will be hanging ‘round my door You need the truth, but some things aren’t up for sale You’ve felt me out, now you’re rushing by full sail I could try, but the feeling won’t let go And you, my dear, will be hanging ‘round my door All these bodies rush right through me It’s like I’m chased by ghosts And you, my dearest, choose to break the ones you love the most I could try, but the feeling won’t let go And you, my dear, will be hanging ‘round my door

I could try, but the feeling won’t let go And you, my dear, will be hanging ‘round my door

COVID antiviral Paxlovid to see price increase following 400% vaccine hike
Ars Technica
The new price is not set, but one analyst suggested it could be up to 5x higher.

After raising the price of COVID-19 vaccines more than four-fold this year, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla told investors Monday that the company will also likely hike the price of its lifesaving COVID-19 antiviral treatment, Paxlovid, raising further concern about access and healthcare costs.

Long Covid Justice on COVID and LONG COVID from the mask ban teach-in

COVID/SARS-CoV-2 basics

It is NOT seasonal, like the flu is.

Spreads through air, like smoke.

The 6 feet apart rule is no longer great prevention advice.

Handwashing is a great hygiene practice, but transmission via surfaces is unlikely.

Vaccines do NOT prevent transmission. They reduce symptoms and severity for some.

You can transmit [COVID] while completely asymptomatic. Around half of transmission is as asymptomatic or presymptomatic. Everyone's immune system is different.

Being indoors increases risk of transmission, but you can still get it in crowded outdoor spaces.

What is Long Covid?

Long Covid is a set of health issues after someone has COVID-19

New health issues, ongoing issues, or worsening of previous symptoms and conditions.

It is a biological disease that affects hundreds of millions of people globally. It is a mass disabling condition and crisis.

It can cause significant disability and can be fatal.

Anyone can develop it, and up to 10% of people with COVID will.

Severity of initial infection doesn't correlate to potential to develop Long COVID.

It can be very hard to get a diagnosis and proper treatment or care for Long COVID.

Every time you get COVID infection, you increase your chances of developing Long COVID.

How do we prevent Long COVID? Layers of protection

Masking.

Air filtration.

Ventilation.

Vaccines.

Testing (right now Aug 2024, rapid tests are only about 20% reliable. Try to test two times in 24-48 hours).

Nasal sprays before and after exposure. (little data on these being effective against COVID but some are choosing to use them until more research comes out)

Mouthwashes with CPC (Cetylpyridinium Chloride) before and after exposure. (Must be used for at least 60 seconds)

Courtyard of the Vestal Virgins

The Virgins were chosen as young girls.  They had to be free of defects, physically & mentally, have 2 living parents, and had to be daughters of citizens of Rome.  The Virgins had a highly sacred and important job.  Awarded many privileges, the Virgins were also given great responsibility and failure to live up to their job could mean a punishment as severe as death

Disarming Armenians is a genocidal tactic, the young turks did the same thing. The nazis disarmed the Jewish population as well.
