cape

it feels like it's been a little while since i've drawn something i've liked. a few days ago i had an image of a girl wearing a yellow poncho/cape in my head, so today i brought her to life. there's a twin piece to this that i'll show at some point, but this one is my favourite.

this year

this year has been so different from last year for me, work-wise. the majority of 2010 in illustration terms was making things to sell, screen-printing & taking part in lots of exhibitions/projects. this year one the other hand... well, for one, i haven't screen-printed at all, which saddens me. however, i've mainly worked with clients, which has been a nice experience; before 2011 i didn't really have that under my belt. i'm now coming to the end of a few jobs & am excited to see those pulled together by the people i'm creating them for. as well as that though, i'm looking forward to getting some personal work done. really, really looking forward to that.

in the meantime, above is a snippet of something. i'm not sure how it happened, but almost all the jobs i've worked on this year have been food-related (though i don't personally view pigs as food).

also in the meantime, here are some incredibly talented ladies whose work i've been swooning over, either just recently or for some time. take a look: tuesday bassen / kaye blegvad / carson ellis / lauren gentry / mary-kate mcdevitt / hannah waldron / ping zhu

new ways of living (iii)

third & final piece from 'new ways of living' for the looking for trouble exhibition in nottingham.

cabin is a triptych, featuring a hint of a narrative if you read from left to right (but you can read it however you want). pretty much all i could think whilst creating this was how much i'd like to be in this drawing. the cabin may be structurally unsound, but there's an incredible view.

new ways of living (ii)

another piece from 'new ways of living' for the looking for trouble exhibition in nottingham.

titled keys, phone, wallet, the objects pictured are three items (cup, knife, compass) that would prove useful towards survival in the great outdoors, but come further down the line in terms of things that are considered necessary for every day life.

iced tea

hello sun! the weather is treating us well on the east coast of scotland today & it inspired me to try making some iced tea for the first time this morning. boiled the kettle, steeped the tea, put in some lemon then left it to cool whilst we went & lazed in the park for a couple of hours. added a little sugar & some ice cubes when we got home & there you have it. easy, cheap & a lot healthier than bottled stuff.

new ways of living (i)

the looking for trouble exhibition - mentioned in my last post - opened in nottingham today. at long last (& it really has felt like forever) i can post some new work online.

i produced a small body of work for the show, collectively titled new ways of living; the pieces are an illustrated exploration into the notion of simplicity in modern life. a hint at how convoluted things can get & perhaps a reminder to step back & evaluate. or something like that.

above is a piece titled haircut, an edition of twelve (because at the time of drawing it'd been twelve months since my last haircut) giclée prints. i'll be posting the rest of the work over this coming week.

peek

apologies for blog silence. i can assure you i've been hard at work, but everything i'm producing at the moment is either for clients or an exhibition. above is a peek at something i finished today; a little triptych of a secret cabin in the mountains. i'll post the full piece next month.

pushpin bookmark

i was pretty happy to find an email in my inbox last week from marceline of asking for trouble, querying whether i'd like to produce an artist's bookmark for her new zine distro, pushpin zines. of course, i said yes. above you can see some detail from my image, a girl engrossed in nick hornby's high fidelity whilst curled up in a cosy reading nook. you can get one of the bookmarks from pushpin for £1 or free when you spend £6 or over on zines.

talkin' dirty

getting a job for a magazine is generally a good thing, but it's even better when it's one you actually subscribe to. a little while back i was asked by bust to illustrate a piece on female-hosted sex-positive readings & today i got the issue through my letterbox. haven't had time to read through yet, but am happy to share space with tuesday bassen & yelena bryksenkova, two super excellent illustrator ladies.

spring

this blog is starting to feel a bit like a new sketchbook - the first few posts (pages) are a little intimidating. i decided to make something that not only takes up a little space, but can go beyond this post. inspired by springtime & spotting rabbits from the various train journeys i took at the weekend, here's a tiled background you can use. choose small, medium or large depending on your preferred rabbit-size.

knitting

sometimes it's nice to be given a simple topic to draw something for, rather than thinking of one yourself. a friend needed an editorial illustration for a publication she was producing in the final year of her master's degree, & asked if i'd illustrate a piece on knitting.

this may not be new to you if you follow me on flickr. a good place to catch up on bits & pieces whilst i find things to fill up this space.

brand new

fresh start! hello, it seems you've found your way over to my new blog. along with a new website layout, i thought i'd try another platform for outpourings. if you wouldn't mind updating your google reader & feeds, that'd be much appreciated.

for any nostalgia trips (just me?), you can see all posts from 2007 to 2011 here.
