Kaiser had never seen anything quite like this before.

"Liebling, what was that?" he asked, barely holding back his laughter as he watched you attempt to kick the soccer ball for the third time—only to miss it entirely. You stood there, foot still raised mid-air, blinking down at the completely untouched ball.

"I—I just miscalculated," you muttered, cheeks burning as you placed your foot back on the ground. "Let me try again."

Kaiser smirked, folding his arms. "Oh, by all means. This is the most entertainment I’ve had in weeks."

You huffed and squared your shoulders. This time, determined not to fail, you swung your foot back and kicked with all your might.

The ball rolled exactly two feet forward.

Silence. Then Kaiser burst out laughing, clutching his stomach as he doubled over. "Mein Gott, Liebling! That was precious. Are you sure you’re not secretly a pro?" He swiped a tear from his eye before sauntering over and ruffling your hair. "I think you should stick to watching me play instead. You’re much cuter that way."

You groaned, shoving his hand off. "You're the worst."

He only grinned. "And yet, you still love me."

Itoshi Rin

Rin was usually a patient man. Usually.

"How… how are you this bad at it?" he asked, staring at you in utter disbelief.

You scowled at him, arms crossed. "It’s harder than it looks! I don’t have a foot made of steel like you."

He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "Okay, let’s try again. Stand properly. Balance your weight. And for the love of god, look at the ball."

You tried. You really did. But once again, your foot barely made contact, causing the ball to pathetically wobble forward.

Rin exhaled sharply through his nose. "That’s it. We're not leaving until you kick it properly."

Your eyes widened. "Rin, no."

"Rin, yes."

"I swear, if you make me do drills—"

"Start running."

"I hate you."

"No, you don’t. Now, again."

Itoshi Sae

Sae was unimpressed. That much was obvious.

He watched as you lined up for another attempt. The first few times, you'd whiffed completely. The fourth time, you'd made contact, but the ball had barely budged. And now? Now you were overthinking it so much you looked like a robot about to malfunction.

With a long sigh, Sae pinched the bridge of his nose. "You're not fighting for your life. Just kick the damn ball."

"I'm trying!" you snapped, frustration bubbling over. "Some of us aren’t soccer prodigies, y'know."

Sae raised an eyebrow. "Clearly."

You turned away with a scowl, but before you could kick again, you felt hands on your waist. Your breath hitched as Sae leaned down, his voice low in your ear. "Here. Let me show you."

His foot ghosted over yours, adjusting your stance. He guided your leg back and forward, helping you make clean contact with the ball. It rolled smoothly across the grass.

He stepped back, crossing his arms. "See? Simple."

You turned to him with a glare. "Yeah, well, it’s easier when you're practically doing it for me."

Sae smirked. "So, you admit you need me."

You rolled your eyes, but the warmth on your face betrayed you. "Shut up."

He let out a soft chuckle, ruffling your hair before walking off. "Come on. Let’s try again. Maybe in another hundred years, you’ll actually get decent."

You groaned. This was going to be a long day.

Rin

There are no slow mornings in your household. No waking up to strong arms slung around you, or at least a good dose of morning breath.

Rin is a morning person. He runs before the sun is up, takes a shower, stretches, meditates if he has the time.

Breakfast is usually ready by the time you slip out of bed and you always feel a little like a fish out of water standing next to him, with your bed head and your sleepshirt askew, with your morning breath and body odour next to his freshly showered beauty.

Today, though, you wake up to his face pressed against your stomach.

"Who are you?" You ask, a little out of the loop still, one hand moving through his hair to identify him. Rin's hair is silky and cool to the touch - he loves when you point out that he's got the best hair of the whole team - and it's still a little damp today.

"Shut up," he grumbles quietly.

"Wow, so it is you," you snort, waking a little. "Back already?"

"Hm."

"Did you slip in the rain and come back inside?"

"It's not raining."

"Did you catch some weird flu?"

"I'm perfectly healthy," Rin points out, his words ghosting his hot breath over your skin. "I can come back to bed when I want to."

"You can. But you never have."

"I know."

"Are you feeling guilty?" You blink down at him. The lack of response is a response. "You are."

"You said it yourself," he grumbles, "Last week. How you feel like we're living different lives. I don't want to live a different life."

"Oh, baby," you slide your hands through his hair and move his head so that you can see him, so that you can lean down and kiss him. It's awkward and stiff and your back protests, but you manage, his lips cool against yours. He tastes like toothpaste.

"You're a morning person. You can stay a morning person. I love you for the fact that you're willing to slip back into bed, but if you promise to kiss me at the kitchen table every morning, you can do your stuff until I feel ready to wake up."

"Every morning," Rin points out, shuffling around until you're face to face. "Staring today." He slips out of bed with a kiss to your temple. "I'm making breakfast."

and one in particular has been on his mind lately. he hasn't been able to see you in days, and the separation is starting to get to him. no hugs, no kisses, no you, no nothing! he thought being victim to your favourite trends was beyond him, but with all of the couples baking cookies shaped like each other, it was sparking something inside of him without consent.

on a random tuesday night, you got a text from rin. that's rare, because he barely ever texts you first. and what was it? a video of him baking cookies shaped like you. he was silent, straight faced, only showing off the ingredients and dough every now and then before you finally got to see the final result. you could tell he tried his best, even putting in the tiniest of details, and creating separate smaller cookies to stick on top.

no, he didn't really want to record himself, but he knew what you were like. he knew you wanted to post the video on tiktok, wanting to show off this new form of affection he's evolved into. he doesn't get it, but he knows it makes you happy.

so you learn to smile when he brings her up. you learn to push your feelings down until they feel distant, dull. you teach yourself to stop imagining what could’ve been because it doesn’t matter now.
