Portrait of Francis Williams, The Jamaican Scholar
England (c. 1745)
[placard reads: Francis Williams (about 1710-about 1770) was a mathemetician and poet, who may have been educated in England. He set up a school in Spanish Town and his portrait shows him as a scholar in a study. This is a convention also used in the ivory relief of Matthew Rapet, shown nearby.]
From the Victoria and Albert Museum:
Francis Williams was born around 1700 to John and Dorothy Williams, a free black couple in Jamaica. John Williams had been freed by the will of his former master and within ten years was able to acquire property. As free blacks the Williams family were increasingly in the minority as Jamaica’s sugar industry, which relied on the labour of enslaved Africans, grew over the course of the 18th century. Even less common were educated black people. However, John Williams’ independent wealth ensured that Francis and his brothers received an education.
I want you to know how glad I am that you are running this blog, especially after what has happened. This is my message of support. I hope you get many more and I hope that you are safe.
Thank you, but I’m not safe. Myself and almost everyone I know have been hiding in their houses, even calling in sick to work, afraid to go anywhere because people are getting harassed and attacked all over. The KKK is literally marching in the streets proclaiming their “victory”. The scant resources or protections that have been keeping me and my closest people alive for the last few years have been “promised” to be removed, and without medical care or a safety net, we will die. Regulations that are supposed to keep our drinking water clean and our working environments safe are being removed, even more than they already have. Discrimination that keeps people from having homes, educations, and jobs is going to be legalized.
I realize there’s a lot of “we made it through [___], we’ll make it through this!” going around, but I’m not “we”. I’m a multiply disabled, chronically ill qpoc with a mountain of student debt, who is living in poverty with a physically disabled partner who only has access to medical care through the ACA and is waiting on an SSDI hearing. There’s already no heat in my house or car, and we live hand-to-mouth when it comes to food. And that’s not even the only direct threat, it’s just the most immediate one.
And I see a lot of people invoking history, but how long ago is history? Because after “reforms” to disability supports to the British system in 2011, literally thousands died within a week of having been deemed “fit for work”. TENS of thousands died under Reagan, and if it’s not clear, I was alive through his entire term and remember it well. This is likely to be worse than that.
I’ve had friends and family over, and we all have found there’s not much to say or do but stare at the walls in despair, and derive small comfort from each others’ presence. We’ll do the best we can, but we all kind of know we’re not the ones who “make it through this.” I’m usually a fairly positive person but I’ve…kinda got nothing here.
Straight like that.

There’s a university in Sweden where students let out primal screams at 10pm every night.
The ‘Flogsta Scream’ occurs when students in Uppsala’s Flogsta neighborhood keep up tradition by stopping what they’re doing at exactly 10pm and collectively screaming from their balconies, windows, and rooftops to help blow off steam and ease the stresses of college exams.
