what with all this talk of fanfic and ai and feeding other people's work without permission into ai programmes to 'finish' a fanfic or whatever... it's just showing how people see fic as 'content'? a fanfic as something mass-produced and official, something to consume at a distance and then talk about in a vacuum? something to use for your own purposes and something over which you have a claim?

fanfic is written by fans like you. written out of love and passion and a lot of effort and hard work, so that the author can share their enthusiasm for the characters and stories with other fans. like you. they aren't these untouchable, faceless people above you – they're your peers. gifsets, fanart, fanfic – they're all made by your peers. mutuals. friends.

if you want to know more about the fic, talk to the author! so many fic writers leave their socials in the end notes of their fics – talk to them! they're not going to be affronted or judgemental. chances are, they're going to be over the moon that you like their work and want to engage and discuss the characters and the themes etc. they made you happy with their fic, and you would be making them so happy in return! (and what does a happy writer do? write more!)

as a fic writer, I made one of my closest tumblr friends because she read my fic and left a really nice comment, and then we got talking and brainstorming loads of headcanons and fic ideas together! fic writers want to talk! if you enjoy someone's presence and contributions in a fandom, let them know!

and for the love of all that is good, don't feed someone's hard work into an ai programme!!! whether you post it (which is just horrible tbh) is beside the point – you're facilitating the plagiarism of their fic!

oh I wasn’t aware it was feeding the ai. I’ve inserted hundreds of fics into chatgpt for their continuation or for a different plot within the same context just for fun and out of curiosity… but I’ve never posted any of them…

Indeed, anything that is given to AI it can use later to draw from. That's why it doesn't matter if you post them or not as it has now access to those writers' texts without their permission.

Hi,

It’s you friendly neighbor fanfic author here. In the light of this apparent new trend of people feeding unfinished fics to AI to get an “ending,” and some people even talking about “blanket permissions,” let me just say this:

I EXPLICITLY FORBID ANYONE TO FEED MY FICS TO AI. DUDE, THAT IS ABOUT THE LEAST RESPECTFUL THING YOU CAN DO. IF YOU DO IT, SHALL YOU BE EXCOMMUNICATED FROM YOUR FANDOM AND WALK ON LEGOS BAREFOOT TILL THE END OF DAYS.

That is my anti-permission.

Thank you for your attention.

Lmaoooo so yeah hum I did it already haha.

I'll most likely download them tomorrow when I have my computer and time.

Thinking about locking my fics on AO3.

I can't do it at the moment but I'll do it and tell y'all when it's done.

I'll also all download them as pdf and epub so if you want them you'll be able to ask me (if really you don't want to make an AO3 account.

So I made a poll asking whether people were planning to lock their fics to help prevent them from getting scraped by AI, and I’ve come away with two takeaways so far.

First, a lot of people think fics are getting chosen and uploaded individually to data sets, and think because they only write short works, or write for a small fandom that means their works are unlikely to be picked. That’s not what we mean when we say AI bots have been scraping AO3. We mean that bots are trawling AO3 and pulling any and all data from the site possible. It’s looking at all 11 million works, not just the ones individuals like/think are quality. AO3 has done what it can to prevent it, but says locking fics might help. Hence why many people are locking.

Second, damn. Y’all need to value your writing more highly. The number of tags I’ve seen on that poll saying things like “my work isn’t good, the sets don’t want it” or “I hope my bad writing poisons the sets” or “I only write porny shit anyway” is ridiculously high. It doesn’t matter if you’re not confident in your writing! It doesn’t matter if you feel like you’re just writing nonsense! It’s still work you did! It is still a genuine expression of your creativity. It’s important because you spent time on it, you put something into the world that wasn’t there before. You took your love for something and created more from that.

I know it’s often a defense mechanism for vulnerability. If you get out in front of the criticism and shit on what you did, then it hurts less when someone is a jackass about it. But don’t let that convince you your work is without value or worth. You put time, effort, and heart into it. AI shouldn’t get to profit off your hard work and vulnerability. Stop selling yourselves short.

If nothing else, value your labor.

Image is a tweet from Fantasy-Faction (@fantasyfaction). Oh jeez! Bad bad, very bad! Writers DO NOT willingly give your manuscript to an AI so it can "learn" by stealing your work! I know blurbs and synopses are hard, but PLEASE do not do this! - JI 🐉. (stolen from @BrennanML & @SravaniWrites so I can include alt text). The tweet refers to an image of a quote tweet from Sudowrite (@sudowrite). New in Sudowrite: Upload your whole novel/script, get instant longlines (sic), blurbs, synopsis, and outline! This tweet is quote tweeting from: james yu (blue checkmark) (@jamesjyu) 1/10/23. We launch Shrink Ray today on Sudowrite! Upload your manuscript and get loglines, blurbs, synopsis, and full outlines automatically. Takes a ton of legwork out of book marketing. Below the tweet are two images of the program.

Update!!:

Big granny squares (not ending in A): 11/13

Small granny squares (not ending in A): 1/60

Small granny squares (not ending in B): 0/12

Quarter large granny square (not ending in A): 4/4

Half large granny square (not ending in A): 8/8

Half small granny square (not ending in B): 12/12

It looks like that for now

Update!!:

So I have thrown myself into a huge project, which is to make a plaid for my mother

Screenshot of a webpage displaying a picture of the finished word. The plaid is placed on a share in backyard.
Screenshot of the webpage for the pattern. Between two blocks of texts are placed two pictures. The top one shows the placement for each version of the granny squares. The bottom one is a photography of the different granny squares.

This is the finished plaid from the creator and all the squares, half squares and quarter squares I have to do.

Photography of the finished work for now. The similar pieces are sorted and placed on top of each other in a manner that allows to see the borders and count them.

I've done all that so far, which corresponds to the four corners, all the big borders, half of the small borders and one baby square.

I'm doing it using yarn my mother wanted, which is a mix of cotton and merinos wool. There's 10 colours total but I'm not using the same as what is shown in the pattern.

Don’t Add Fanfiction To Your Goodreads Shelf

Hi folks, I know some of you like to use Goodreads to track all your reading and don’t want to distinguish between books and fanfiction.

I am, however, begging you not to do this. It is extremely jarring and disconcerting to be a fic author and find your works somewhere in the wild where you did not personally put them. Fics are not books, are not published in the same way as books, and exist in a precarious legal space.

Please don’t attempt to elide the separation that exists between fandom and the world of official publishing.

They're already past the amount asked, past the double of the amount AND past the triple of the amount.

They're Already Past The Amount Asked, Past The Double Of The Amount AND Past The Triple Of The Amount.

So yeah, consider donating to those above instead of AO3 for once. They'll be fine.

as ao3 approaches almost 6x what they asked for, here are some other places to give your money to

Iranian American Woman Fund

Women’s Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran

Taller Salud (which is non-profit in Puerto Rico currently collecting donations for support after Hurricane Fiona)

Out & Equal (which supports LGBTQ+ during the hiring process + helps defend against workplace discrimination)

The Foundation for AIDS Research

Center for Black Equity (supports the black queer community)

Funds for Writers (which offers grants to aspiring writers so they can afford publication, time off from work, etc.)

The Audre Lorde Project (which directly supports queer POC in New York City)

PEN America (which helps writers in financial need across the United States)

This is an entire list of organizations supporting queer and BIPOC STEM students you can donate to

The BGD Press (which specifically publishes queer POC)

****but if you want to directly support the people who make you free content, the next time your favorite fic writer or artists makes a crowd funding post, opens commissions, talks about their patreon/ko-fi, donate your money there!!****

literally Wikipedia would be better at this point

Reply by obscurelittelbird saying: "If you sell on Redbubblem please consider filling out the survey that was included in the email"

End ID]

The link is real, for anyone wondering, I checked the email again. However, I don't create much art and don't sell anything on redbubble so I just went and deleted my account (since, again, I'm overall not using it) and stated what I didn't in the update as the reason.

The link is this. So yeah if you're selling on Redbubble do fill it I guess.

Not 100% sure I'm reading this right but,

The tiers are intended to encourage actions that are positive for the marketplace and recognise and reward artists who invest time creating and promoting unique products.

Hum... Great, so if you wanted to have a redbubble on the side to make some money then you're basically not welcome???

And seriously I am in tears at that like wow. Basically, if you make enough money for Redbubble, the fee is removed. Basic tiers have to pay a fee, but premium and pro don't.

There's also the "opportunity to create licensed fan art" that bugs me because, there already was a list of things you could make fan art of depending on the list they have, but now you can't unless you have a premium or pro account? While (from what I've seen at least) most small artists make fan art and sell it because they know that there is a fanbase for it and that it will sell.

I do understand the copyright problem they face, sure. But the rest still is... not good.

Over the past few years the amount of new accounts and content has increased significantly on our marketplace. This has resulted in increased costs as we’ve needed greater investment in resources to operate the marketplace and support our artist community and your customers.

So yeah, increased costs that they will make the small artists pay for and subsequently make people think twice before coming on the plateform, or just leave it.

Excited for this outcome. Especially because Tumblr is so English-centric, even though a lot of people are not native speakers.

As always, reblog for a bigger sample size.

Put the actual language you write in in the tags!
