The Frozen Waterfalls of Hierve el Agua

Off the beaten path in Oaxaca, Mexico, two soaring cliffs resemble frozen waterfalls. Their name, Hierve el Agua (“the water boils”), stems from the warm mineral springs on the clifftops. As runoff from the pools flows over the cliffs, excess calcium carbonate in the water sculpts the rock. Ages of this process have resulted in the cliffs’ distinct appearance. Instagrammers visiting the cliffs have explored the bubbling turquoise pools and captured the view of the lush valley below.

Lalibela Rock-Cut Churches | Socks Studio

１３世紀のキリスト教建築？

Lalibela is a mountainous area in Ethiopia famous for its a peculiar complex of twelve religious constructions built probably in the 12th or 13th century. These “Monolithic Churches” (Church of the Redeemer, of Saint Mary, of Mount Sinai, of Golgotha, of the House of the Cross, of the House of the Virgins, of Saint Gabriel, of Abba Matta, of Saint Mercurius, of Immanuel, of St. George) have been carved out of red volcanic rock in the Middle-ages probably for the will of King Lalibela. The local sovereign wished to found a a “New Jerusalem” after Christian pilgrimage to the Holy Land was forced to stop due to Muslim conquest.

The twelve churches represent an exquisite example of a long-established Ethiopian building tradition and have been hewn out of monolithic rock: much is yet to discover about how the incredible work was executed, how many men it needed and which tools were employed, but it is common opinion, for churches like the Bet Giorgis (St George), that the workers would have started at the top and carved downwards creating the roof and the exterior walls of the church.Then they would have hollowed it out to give shape to the interiors and finally they would have further sculpted the rock to create doors, windows, columns and enriched the interiors with different details. The majestic work of carving was then completed by the construction of an extensive complex of drainage ditches, catacombs, caves and trenches in order to connect all the churches together in a maze-like underground system.

This month marks the last opportunity to see Graced with Light, artist Anne Patterson’s year-long installation in San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral (@gracecathedral).

Commissioned in 2013 as Grace Cathedral’s artist in residence, Patterson strung nearly 32 kilometers (20 miles) of multicolored ribbons from the Cathedral’s vaulted ceilings. Illuminated from above and by light streaming in through the cathedral’s windows, the ribbons represent pathways of light carrying the prayers and dreams of visitors skyward.

Denunciado como cristão, foi condenado pelo imperador a ser atravessado por flechas. Milagrosamente curado das flechadas, reapresentou-se com coragem diante do tirano e increpou-o por sua impiedade. Foi então surrado até à morte, no circo de Roma. É padroeiro da cidade do Rio de Janeiro.

Bolo de café e nozes

Ingredientes

2 xícaras (chá) de açúcar,

1 xícara (chá) de Café passado forte,

3 colheres (sopa) de manteiga,

2 xícaras (chá) de farinha de trigo,

1 xícara (chá) de nozes moídas,

1 colher (sopa) de fermento em pó

Para o Fondant de café

2 xícaras (chá) de açúcar de confeiteiro,

¼ xícara (chá) de café filtrado.

Modo de Preparo

Para a massa, bata as claras em neve na batedeira e vá juntando as gemas, uma a uma até ficar uma mistura fofa e clara. Adicione o açúcar aos poucos, batendo por mais 5 minutos. Aqueça o café com a manteiga, em fogo baixo até que derreta. Diminua a velocidade da batedeira e vá alternando na massa um pouco de farinha de trigo e um pouco da mistura de café e manteiga.Retire e misture delicadamente as nozes e o fermento em pó. Coloque em uma assadeira e asse em forno médio (180ºC), pré-aquecido, por cerca de 30 minutos, ou até que enfiando um palito ele saia limpo. Retire e espere esfriar. Faça o fondant. Misture os ingredientes até que fique uma pasta. Coloque sobre o bolo frio e deixe solidificar. Corte em quadrados ou losangos e sirva.
