❝ Everything we do, every thought we’ve ever had, is produced by the human brain. But exactly how it operates remains one of the biggest unsolved mysteries, and it seems the more we probe its secrets, the more surprises we find. ❞

How to read a scientific paper

Step 1: begin at the beginning

read the title

get excited for cool science

note the authors

get mad at them for having more papers than you

spend ten minutes wondering if you’d have been better off going to whatever institution they’re at

die a little inside

Step 2: the abstract and introduction

read the abstract

skip right to the introduction because you’re not completely sure what they’re talking about and maybe that will clear it up

alright now we’re talking

understand the entire first paragraph of the introduction

mostly get the second and third paragraphs

skip over the technical bit at the end because boring

Step 3: the results (aka the good stuff)

read the first paragraph

really not get what’s being said

skip right to figure 1

read the figure caption

call it good, you got the jist

repeat for the remaining figures

Step 4: give up

this paper really isn’t answering the question you had in the first place

you’ll just cite it later it’s fine

Step 5: keep doing science!

fail because of some unexpected and puzzling problem

spend 2-6 weeks troubleshooting and getting nowhere

decide to do another literature search to see if anyone else has had this issue

find the same paper you read before cited a bunch

Step 6: reread

actually like read it this time

get to the end

find the answer to your question

die a little inside

wonder why you didn’t just read it fully to begin with and save yourself weeks of work

Step 7: follow citations to another paper that looks relevant

repeat entire cycle

wonder why science is so hard

“Over Time Our Individual Sense Of Identity (social Mask) Has Been Shaped Into A Particular Pattern

“Over time our individual sense of identity (social mask) has been shaped into a particular pattern (template) given to us by our society. This is the feeling of exclusivity; belonging to a particular tribe, race, religion or country. If this assimilation of ‘divide and conquer’ is successful (through conformity), you cannot successfully exit this artificial matrix construct.” -Anon I mus (Spiritually Anonymous)

“Most of us go through our entire lives experiencing unnecessary, personal suffering without ever waking up to the light of our true, infinite nature. The prison that we are trapped in exists only as internal programming inside of our heads; a thought-created construct of an illusory separate person (me, myself and my story) and its false conditioning.”  ~Anon I mus (Spiritually Anonymous)

“Keeping The Internet Open Is Critical For Us. It Powers Social Movements, And Provides A Global Platform

“Keeping the internet open is critical for us. It powers social movements, and provides a global platform for people of color, LGBTQ folks and the most marginalized communities to tell their own stories, run their own businesses and route around powerful gatekeepers.”—Candace Clement, Free Press Action Fund Campaign Director via @fight4future

Starting today, June 11, U.S. internet providers will be legally allowed to censor and block websites and apps, and force you to pay extra fees to to access your favorite places online. Your internet sanctuaries, the communities you are part of, the ones you have help build up, could be decimated.

Will it happen today? No. Next week? Probably not. The changes will not be swift. They will come piece by piece. A slow, tempered death to the free and open internet we love.

It doesn’t have to be this way. You can still make a difference, Tumblr. We need the House of Representatives to sign a discharge petition in support of the Congressional Review Act that would force a vote on the floor.

Contact your reps—let them know you support net neutrality.

It’s so easy. Just go to BattleForTheNet.com, fill out the form, and follow their directions from there.

They have an updated widget for you to throw on your websites to urge others to make a difference. You can put it on your Tumblr. Let your followers know what you stand for, encourage them to do the same. It’s so easy to do. Just copy and paste their small line of code right into the customize theme page on the web.

Go, go, go, go. We know you have that passion in you. We’re fighting right alongside you.

The year is 2018. Your bills are on autopay. You just got paid and you still have $1200 from the last check. When you want something, you buy it without moving money around. Your credit cards are paid off. You and your friends have 2 international trips planned and paid for this year. Your parents are in great health and you’re able to help if they need anything. You love your job. Your desired creative career is falling into place and you get to take your little cousins to Six Flags and Universal Studios over the Summer. Your relationships are healthy and supportive. All of the toxic energy from the past 6 years is gone. You going to concerts, eating good across the states and your crib has art and warmth throughout. 2018 is going to be so good to you.

“All External Enemies That Appear Before Us Are Merely Projections And Judgments Created From Our Own

“All external enemies that appear before us are merely projections and judgments created from our own unobserved ‘egoic mind’.”  ~Anon I mus (Spiritually Anonymous)
