Prompt 6: " What does your shadow do while you re sleeping?"

The rain poured down onto any unfortunate soul that night. The only source of light in the lonely room was the lightning from the sky. A little girl turned and toused into her bed, kicking the sheets and her tedy bear onto the cold floor. Unknowngly to her, something watched over her little outburst in pity, right on the ceiling was that little dark silhouette that followed behind her back since the day she was born, her shadow. It swore to keep any monsters from her dreams and from under her bed away and it was going to keep its promise. So he got rid of both and watched her sleep peacefully again, and again, and again...

"So man, what does your shadow do while you re sleeping?"

" What any good friend would do, keeps me safe and sound when things go bad.."

"Whatever you say dude, let s keep watching the news... wait, another crime in the neighborhood? I wonder who could be the criminal this time..."

" hi...hi...hi...hi"

Prompt 5: ,, Please remain calm and stay indoors."

Why? Just why? Why did I let this happen in the first place? It s too late to apologise now...

Ok, let me explain myself. I m a scientist and as you can probably tell, one of my experiments... well, went berserk. It was meant to be an invention that would help clear the sky of all the acid clouds that formed after years and years of pollution. What I didn t expected was that the gaz I invented somehow mutated the already radioactive particles of the clouds, thus bringing to earth a special kind of acidic rain that managed to contaminate half of the population on earth, including plants, animals and destroying inanimated objects such as cars and wood and basically anything organic. So now we have to deal with shortages of potable water, food and having to fight zombie like creatures that can infect everything around them.

It s kinda funny, on one of ours battles a radio could be heard faint in the distance. " Please remain calm and stay indoors" my ass. 'The world won t save itself' , I throught as everything around me went suddenly black and I was knocked out cold...

,,Well, that s inconvenient... WAIT, she s a child, right?"

,,I suppose..?"

,,And what do children always like?"

,,Weapons of massive distruction , sir?"

,,No, you soft cucumber, COOKIES!!!... So dear, let s make a deal. For that little piece of information that we want, we will give you a cookie of your liking. Deal?"

,,... Cookies? You re bribing me with cookies? I mean, they are good, but not that good."

,, Is that so? Well then, gentlemen, shall we bring a 'drink' for our special guest to enjoy with the cookie....?"

Prompt 3: „ You re right above ‚clown' on my creepy scale..”

So, waking up in the middle of the night in an unknown location, not anymore in the bed you crashed earlier and heck, even in your normal clothes anymore dure woke u up from your deep slumber.

The room looked old but well kept, with a king sized bed, a small dusty table in the corner, a rocking chair with a ghost in it, a window on the left side of the room, a door .... wait, did I just said ghost...?!?

As on cue, the ghost rose from the rocking chair so fast upon seeing that u woke up that it send it to the floor with a loud thud echoing into the room. The ghost looked like it died tragically, probably asassinated or in a fight or something, since it looked like something sharp dug into its chest if we judge from the gap where its heart should be...

It keep starring above me, so I slowly followed it s gaze... there I found an old looking painting of a girl, a beautiful one at that, wearing a dress, the same one I m wearing right now...

It is a beautiful drawing, if we ignore the red smeared on every inch of it, well, minus the bust of the girl..

Now the ghost dropped it s gaze on my shaking form as a creepy smile began to form on it s face and it s eyes started to glow ...

„You are right above ‚clown ‚ on my creepy scale” i thought as i closed my eyes tightly, waiting for the spirit to take my breath away... quite literally...

Prompt 2:” It doesn t matter, you weren t using those memories anyway...”

Everything felt blank, like someone drained every fiber of your being, like something was missing...

With just a snap of his long fingers, and a silent sound of someone mumbling something under their breath... You started to squirm into the chair that your captor tied you tightly.

„You are a monster... what have i ever done to you to deserve this..? „ , you tried to fight back the sleppiness and the pounding headache that fogged up your mind at the moment, but you could feel your eyelids starting to drop..

„It doesn t matter, you weren t using those memories anyway... weapon...”. A chill ran down your spine as the icy voice chuckled sinestrely at your misfourtune... You just hopped someone would come and find you... even if you can t remember exactly who would that be...

Prompt 1 :” I can t leave her there all alone, surrounded by stone walls”

It was agaist all my moral beliefs to not follow my commander’s strict rules, but I took pity on the helpless girl that was fast asleep now thanks to the sedatives and probably from the fresh wound on her forehead that the guard gladly gave her when she tried to free herself from his grasp. Either way, she was looking miserable: hair greasy and tangled with grime , mudd and a little bit of blood, clothes dirty and torn, the dress barely covering her anymore and a boot went missing along the way i guess, since she was basically shoeless now. But her face was her most prominent feature, even when she was scrunching her nose and her brows knitted together in a pained manner, she was still the most breathtaking creature I lied my eyes on.

„I can t leave her there all alone, surrounded by stone walls”, I kept telling myself. „Otherwise she will die or they will get to her and make her wish she was never born”. „I have to free her... even if that means going agaist everyone on this planet.”

how to learn a language when duolingo isn't cutting it

I know sometimes we try to learn a language through these fancy programs and games, but here are some other activities and ideas if you feel like you're stuck

Use a dictionary. Not an online one, a paper copy. The bigger the better. It helps you think of the grammar (e.g. conjugations) so it's not just available at the touch of a screen. (if you really can't find a word in the dictionary, thencheck online).

Read books and articles and look up and write down every word you don't know. Then, when you've looked up the words, read over it again, checking your new vocab list when you come across the words you don't know. You can make these words into flashcards, but you don't have to. Eventually, you'll have a pretty solid base on common words because of this.

Translate with only your dictionary and your brain. Similar to number one, but treat the translating like an exercise. If you're translating into your target language (or even into your native language) get a native speaker to check it over.

As for what you should translate, go for passages of articles and books, or songs. Preferably what you like or find interesting, but go for some slightly boring stuff as well for variety.

Drill verb conjugations with flashcards, especially irregulars.

Listen to music in the language and sing along to the lyrics. This really helps if the writing system is different to your native language's, but it also helps reading speed regardless. The more words you know, the faster you'll become, usually.

learning languages as a beginner

a non-complete guide written by a english-native high-school student with experience in studying japanese, indonesian and currently—romanian.

language proficiency is separated into four skills. reading, writing, listening and speaking.

as a complete beginner, or even to someone within the A1 range, one should focus mainly on these three core skills: reading, writing and listening. right now, pronunciation should not be your main focus. speaking skills, while they should be slowly developed from the beginning, are not as easily mastered as reading or writing and thus can cause a feeling of stagnation. languages have specific skills that need to be developed before one can pronounce words properly and these specific skills can take months to master. as a tip, one should master those specific skills before focusing on pronunciation. (for example, romanian requires the speaker to be able to roll their ‘ r ’s.)

use the skill of listening to your advantage

young children spend their first few years listening until they are able to create coherent sentences. don’t expect your experience to be any different.

as a beginner, you do not have to understand everything, or anything, that is being said. at this stage, you are unconsciously learning how to distinguish your target language from other languages, as well as forming ideas and creating patterns between words in your head.

i always create a song playlist in my target language. spotify has playlists already created that include the top 100 ranked songs from that country/language, feel free to listen to these playlists. i then create a separate playlist full of all my favourite songs from the target language (and because they are my favourite) i listen to them on repeat. naturally, you may start to sing along, begin to know the songs off by heart, etc. this is one of the most easiest and natural way of learning a language.

tv shows and movies. children’s cartoons or mature tv shows, it does not matter. the combination of subtitles in your native language, audio in your target language, and the context of the film, helps the brain process simple words. these words, when repeated, become words you’ve effortlessly remembered. as a plus, you know how to pronounce these words and in what context they are used and/or mean.

do not think of these methods as studying, but rather purely for your enjoyment. it makes listening to these playlists, and watching tv shows, less of a task and something you are more inclined to do.

a journal is your best friend

a specific space dedicated to the learning process of your target language is, well, highly recommended. emphasis on specific. in this journal you will be able to practice your reading and writing skills.

for me, i use my journal to create vocab lists separated by the word’s function, context, etc. (for example, every noun word used to identify a person in a family, such as mother or uncle, is recorded together). i often see others create vocab lists under the ‘ top hundred common words ’ in whatever language, and i advocate against this. your brain needs to associate and make links with words, and this ‘ most common words ’ association loses meaning fast. thus, you do not retain the information.

the creation of vocab lists do multiple things in my learning process. first, i will collect these words, usually from an online source or a language textbook. already, i have read the words and my brain has processed them and understood that one word translates to the other, and in what context they should be used. second, i copy these words and write them down in my journal (i make sure i write the word in my target language multiple times). here i have practised writing the words multiple times. usually, with this method i am able to retain the majority of the information by the next day.

the trick is less information. thus why i mentioned studying the top hundred most common words does not work. as a beginner, you only need to study the essentials. if your vocab list exceeds more than 20 words, you are less likely to remember the majority of the words.

you’re journal is not only good for vocab lists. you are able to track your progress, keep track of all your information, and so much more.

after one hour, you will retain less than half of the information you studied. in a day, you will have forgotten over 70% of your vocab. this is natural. do not be upset that you aren’t ‘studying’ enough to remember more than 50 words in your first week. repetition is essential here to make sure your brain understands that this information is important and should be kept.

repetition, repetition, repetition

albeit it does not matter how you incorporate repetition into your routine. you can practise a vocab list everyday in the shower, create an audio of all your vocab that you listen to whilst you workout, whatever. do what works best for you. flashcards are still a good bet regardless.

you are able to practice reading and writing when creating your flashcards, whether they are digital or not.

here is a method on how to use flashcards that i personally follow. i highly recommend this method, as it is all about repetition, repetition, repetition.

personally, i aim to review each set of flashcards once a day by myself. sometimes, i get a native to quiz me over text, which means i practise writing the words out or they quiz me over phone call, and then i am practising speaking. the four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking are very important and they should all be incorporated somehow when reviewing vocab lists, etc.

find a native friend

a native in your target language is a god-saver. trust me. obviously, they must be willing to want to teach you occasionally, but they must not be your only source of learning.

you may know someone in real life that speaks your target language. that’s great! some do not however, but fear not. there are billions of internet users, and you are bound to find someone who is not only a native in your target language, but someone you connect with on a more personal level. tumblr is a great way to find friends, the langblr community is great here. you can find blogs in your native language as well if you type in the name of the language.

this is a tip i don’t find often on guides in the langblr community. many often think you can only learn from: textbooks, teachers or through self-studying. native speakers are another source you can learn from. they understand the culture of their country: you can pick up a lot of information by simply just talking to them. you can pick up on slang you wouldn’t have otherwise learnt, words that are abbreviated, etc.

of course this is not a complete guide. this is based off my experience with eleven years of learning languages, and what works for me the best. what works for me may not work for you and that is completely fine. everyone needs to study in different ways. i hope you learnt something new from this guide. good luck with your language learning!

Plotting Methods for Meticulous Plotters

A Guide for the Seasoned and the Not-So-Plot Savvy

This is a subject that a lot of writers tend to struggle with. They have ideas, great ideas, but are uncertain how to string them together into a solid plot. There are many methods that have been devised to do so, and most seem to be based on something you might remember:

The 5 Point Method

This is your basic plot diagram:

image

Exposition – This is the beginning of your story. This is where you introduce your character (s), establish a setting, and also present your main conflict.

Rising Action – Your story now begins to build. There are often multiple key events that occur where your main character may be faced with a new problem he has to solve, or an unexpected event is thrust at him.

Climax – Everything you’ve been writing has been leading up to this moment. This is going to be the most exciting part of your story where your main character faces the main conflict and overcomes it.

Falling Action – This is mostly tying up loose ends after your main conflict is resolved. They are minor things that weren’t nearly as important as the main conflict, but still needed to be dealt with.

Resolution – The end of the story.

This is probably the easiest way to remember how to string together a single (or multiple) plots. It may be easier for some to define the main plot as the central conflict: the thing that’s causing your main character a huge problem/is his goal.

The 8 Point Method

This method is used to write both novels and film scripts, and further breaks down the 5 Point Method. From the book Write a Novel and Get It Published: A Teach Yourself Guide by Nigel Watts:

Stasis – The opening where the story takes place. Here you introduce your main character and establish a setting (Watts defines it as an “everyday” setting, something normal, but it can be whatever you want).

Trigger or Inciting Incident – The event that changes your character’s life and propels your story forward. This is where you introduce the main conflict.

The Quest – The result of the event. What does your character do? How does he react?

Surprise – This section takes place in the middle of the story, and involves all of the little setbacks and unexpected events that occur to the main character as he tries to fix the problems he’s faced with and/or achieve his goal. This is where you as an author get to throw complications, both horrible and wonderful, at your protagonist and see what happens.

Critical Choice – At some point your character is going to be faced with making a decision that’s not only going to test him as individual, but reveal who he truly is to the audience. This cannot be something that happens by chance. The character must make a choice.

Climax – This is the result of the main character’s critical choice, and should be the highest point of tension in the story.

Reversal – The consequence of the choice and climax that changes the status of your protagonist, whatever that may be. It could make him a king, a murderer, or whatever else you like but it has to make sense with the rest of the story.

Resolution – The end of the story where loose ends are tied up. You’re allowed to leave things unresolved if you intend to write a sequel, but the story itself should be stand alone.

Three Act Structure

While this method is usually for screenplays, it is also used in writing novels (for instance The Hunger Games novels are split up into three acts). From the The Screen Writer’s Workbook by Syd Field: Acts 1 and 3 should be about the same length while Act 2 should be double. For instance if you were writing a screenplay for a two hour film Acts 1 and 3 would be 30 minutes each while Act 2 would be 60 minutes.

Act 1, Set Up – This contains the inciting incident and a major plot point towards the end. The plot point here leads into the second act and is where the protagonist decides to take on the problem he’s faced with.

Act 2, Confrontation – This contains the midpoint of the story, all of the little things that go wrong for the protagonist, and a major plot point towards the end that propels the story into the third act. This is the critical choice the character must make.

Act 3, Resolution – This is where the climax occurs as well as the events that tie up the end of the story.

Another way to look at this method is that there are actually three major plot points, or disasters, that move the plot forward. The first is at the end of Act 1, the second is in the middle of Act 2, and the third is at the end of Act 2.

The Snowflake Method

A “top-down” method by Randy Ingermanson that breaks novel writing down into basic parts, building upon each one. You can find his page on the method here. His ten steps:

Write a single sentence to summarize your novel.

Write a paragraph that expands upon that sentence, including the story set up, the major conflicts, and the ending.

Define your major characters and write a summary sheet corresponding to each one that includes: the character’s name, their story arc, their motivation and goal, their conflict, and their epiphany (what they will learn).

Expand each sentence of your summary paragraph in Step 2 into its own paragraph.

Write a one page description of your major characters and a half page description of less important characters.

Expand each paragraph in Step 4 into a page each.

Expand each character description into full-fledged character charts telling everything there is to know about the characters.

Make a spreadsheet of all of the scenes you want to include in the novel.

Begin writing the narrative description of the story, taking each line from the spreadsheet and expanding the scenes with more details.

Begin writing your first draft.

Wing It

This is what I do most of the time. I tend to keep in mind the basic structure of the 5 Point Method and just roll with whatever ideas come my way. I’ve never been a fan of outlines, or any other type of organization. According to George R.R. Martin, I’ve always been a gardener, not an architect when it comes to writing. I don’t plan, I just come up with ideas and let them grow. Of course, this may not work for some of you, so here are some methods of organization:

Outlines

Notecards

Spreadsheets

Lists

Character Sheets

And if all else fails, you can fall on the advice of Chuck Wendig: 25 Ways to Plot and Prep Your Story.

Remember, none of the methods above are set in stone. They are only guidelines to help you finally write that novel.

Another note: While I still do the ‘Wing It’ method for a lot of shorter works, I’ve settled into actually outlining my novel using the three act structure as a guide and a ton of bullet points. It’s completely okay to adopt a new plotting method when you’ve been using the same one for years. I’ve got 7 pages of outline for Act 1, and it was probably one of the best writing decisions I’ve made. Don’t get discouraged if something doesn’t click. Instead, try something different.

Story#12 16.06.2019

I don t wanna be "edgy"

I m just trying to survive

With the dreams that i have dear

When they try to block me.

I m not perfect

I m just real

I don t wanna make you scream

I just wanna do my thing

Without you having to see what i mean.

It s my life

Shut tf up

If you wasted yours

Don t you dare try to sabotage mine

I will kill you with success

And you will scream when you die

Like the dreams i sacrificed

For your rotten ego. Bye

Story#11 16.06.2019

Hello, hello, hello

You can' t be that obvious

You can' t even fall asleep

You don' t even dare to dream

What' s in front of you, you think

It' s enough to make you keep

All your demons at bay

Do not let them steal away

All the sunshines, all the rays

That make your life

A paradise

That you only have the key

Story#10 16.06.2019

Can you hear my voice

Thru the sound of silence?

Can you see my eyes

Thru the veil of darkness?

Can you feel my warmth

Thru the coldness of the night?

Can you feel my breath

Thru the windy night?

Can you see me

When your eyes are closed?

Can you stay with me for a little longer?

Can you hear my voice

Or i m just thinking outloud?

Am I the bad or the good guy?

If my heart is bleeding gold

But my mind is screaming loud...

If my instincts tell me to spare

But my thoughts push me to dare

If i love with all my heart

But i don t trust myself on how to act

If i always crack a smile on the outside

But still it s dark inside my mind

Am i the bad or the good guy?

Story#8 -14.05.2019

What's a person without dreams?

Stardust and darkness inside their heads,

Pools of water falling from the mirrors

Frozen blood running thru their veins

And hatred burning inside their hearts...

If this is how it feels to be alive,

Than i m already a corpse in the making

Every moment of my life...

Call me a monster, say i ve rotten to the core, say i m just a shadow of the person i used to be

Just don't dare to say "I love you",

Keep away your filthy lies and found another puppet to use and than discard...
