Searching in databases tips

▪️Find the appropriate database

Databases examples 📚

• Web of Science: a database indexing articles on the arts, humanities and social sciences

• Scopus: a database listing journal articles in social, health and physical sciences

• PubMed: a database listing publications in life sciences

• JSTOR: a database of books, primary sources and journal articles on a range of subjects

▪️ Choose your search terms carefully

Think carefully about the terms that you type into the search box. Avoid too many search terms, too few search terms, inappropriate search terms, incorrect spelling or not including spelling variations 🤯

▪️ What are you searching?

You may have to use fewer or less specific terms in databases that only search an abstract, brief description or summary of the references 📑

▪️Combine search terms (AND, OR, NOT)

Connectors (sometimes called Boolean operators) are used to combine search terms. There are three connectors: AND, OR, NOT. 

▫️AND placed between words means both words must appear in each reference. This will narrow your search

▫️OR placed between words means that either, or all, word/s may appear in each reference. This will broaden your search

▫️ NOT place between words means that the second word must not appear in any reference

▪️Word variations

Truncate words to retrieve all the alternative terms. It is a good way to save time or ensure you have included all the possible variations 🗄

▪️ Limit or refine your results

Look for the different limit options in the database when you are getting too many results (published in certain years or published in a particular journal) 📅

▪️ Snowballing to locate similar references

Check the list of references or bibliography in any relevant references you have already located. This may point you to other useful references. Some databases support cited-reference searching. This is a technique that allows you to start with one important reference and then find later references that cite it

i think that’s what having a girl crush feels like. it’s like you’re insides are filled with heat every time she smiles softly at you. but not in a way that’s scolding hot to the touch and you’re burning from the inside. no, it’s more in a way that the heat is practically hugging you. her smile is trapping you in her embrace. the way her lips curve up to show her bright teeth in your direction is rich with flavor.

help us save ducky's emotional support animal

hi everyone!! this is squirt. he is three years old and he's a very beloved emotional support animal. since he came into our lives, he has been a huge help with my fiancee's depression and PTSD. he's the sweetest cat i've ever met.

he is also very sick. over this past weekend, we noticed that his breathing was very labored and that he was lethargic; he wasn't eating or playing with our other cat. when the breathing difficulty persisted, we decided to take him to the vet.

after getting him x-rayed, we were told that squirt has a "diffuse mixed pulmonary pattern...characterized by multiple coalescing rounded soft-tissue opaque nodules with a concurrent bronchial and unstructured interstitial pattern". basically, there's something in his lungs that's making it hard for him to breathe.

the vet believes he has either fungal pneumonia, toxoplasmosa, mycoplasma, or immune mediated pulmonary disease. they would like to hospitalize him and run the proper tests to get him diagnosed (and eventually treated). unfortunately, we cannot afford the cost of the tests. we were able to get him some medication that is going to keep him comfortable, but these meds will not make him better.

here is the current cost estimate for his care we were given by our vet (5/17/2021):

we were told by the vet that he has a chance at a long life if we can pull the money together to get him treated. he has brought so much comfort into my fiancee's life and made them so happy. if we cannot pay to take care of his medical needs, we will need to put him down.

we have started a gofundme to cover the cost of his diagnostic tests and initial treatments. our current fundraising goal is $5,500. these funds are going towards Squirt's diagnosis--we are likely going to have to update this page with an increased amount depending on what the diagnosis actually is. (for instance, if it's fungal pneumonia, we've been told that therapy to treat it can be expensive as well.) additional information we were given from our vet is posted on the gofundme page. additionally, my fiancee is available to take digital art commissions if you would prefer to help us that way. here is their art blog. money made from commissions will also go to squirt's medication and care. commission info can be found on this carrd. please help us save our cat. he's a very good boy. if he has a chance at living, we would like to save him and give him a long, happy life.

i try to be as kind as possible as often as i can, but i’m so worried that deep down i must be ‘faking’ it.

like, am i really just an awful person who’s putting up a façade? and if i am, why? for what? love? safety? survival? my ego? am i just tricking people into thinking i’m a good person? i don’t know which parts of me are real and which ones aren’t and it terrifies me!
