Many spellcasters-to-be imagine how exciting life will be once they've acquired some skills and a wand, but very few picture the everyday upkeep of said wand. That's why we at the Mage Guidance Department created this guide: to spread awareness so that prospective mages can know what to expect when choosing a life of magic. It's not all fun and mind games—it's a commitment to care!
(This is my piece for Dottolus' Dotnomicon: Grimoire of Wonders, a magic book zine organized by @dotzines. Below the cut are the static versions. It was fun to play with the idea of a book with magically shifting content!)
Efficient Learning: A Guide to SQ3R Method!
In the pursuit of effective learning, the SQ3R method stands out as a powerful and structured approach. This method, which stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review, is designed to enhance comprehension and retention. Let's delve into each step of the SQ3R method to understand how it can revolutionize your study habits.
1. Survey: Begin by surveying the material.
Glance through headings, subheadings, and any visual aids to get an overview of the content. This step provides a roadmap for what lies ahead, enhancing your understanding of the structure and main ideas.
2. Question: Generate questions based on the survey.
Transform headings or key concepts into questions. This engages your mind actively in the learning process, setting a purpose for reading and guiding your focus on what to extract from the text.
3. Read: Read the material attentively.
While reading, seek answers to the questions formulated in the previous step. Take notes on essential information and make connections between new and existing knowledge. Active reading enhances comprehension and retention.
4. Recite: Summarize or verbally recall what you've learned.
After reading a section, close the book and recite key points or answer questions from memory. This step reinforces understanding, identifies areas of weakness, and solidifies the material in your mind.
5. Review: Periodically review the material.
Regularly revisit your notes, questions, and recitations. This ongoing review helps strengthen memory and ensures long-term retention of the information.
Applying SQ3R in Various Contexts:
1. Textbooks and Academic Readings: Utilize SQ3R to efficiently tackle dense academic texts, enhancing your ability to grasp and apply complex concepts.
2. Note-Taking and Lectures: Implement SQ3R during lectures by preparing questions beforehand and actively engaging with the presented material. This method complements note-taking strategies.
3. Research Papers: Apply SQ3R to navigate research papers, enabling you to extract key information, formulate questions for deeper understanding, and retain the material effectively.
By surveying, questioning, actively reading, reciting, and reviewing, you not only enhance comprehension but also create a structured and effective learning routine. Share your thoughts and tips in the comments! 💗

It’s too late to save the world
Ash trees sprout in cracks in the asphalt. The gutters collect leaves, which become soil, in which dandelions sprout.
There’s nothing you can do
A man plants an entire forest. A young girl teaches a drone to deliver saplings. The elderly volunteer to clean up radioactive waste.
You might as well give up
Wolves return to ancestral hunting grounds. Bison return to the prairie. Otters return to the kelp beds. Young oaks push roots deep into reclaimed farmland.
Who cares anyway?
Children draw pictures of flowers. Festivals are held for cherry blossoms and pecans and apples. A crowd cheers as the last line is cut away from the ensnared creature.
I have disobeyed worse than you
The world does not die on my watch
I wanna point out a thing that feels still so "off" to me about alt!Powder.
Homegirl is so quick to jump in and anxiously make everything seem okay.
(season 1) Jinx was obsessed with not appearing weak (as a means of obtaining love)
and alt!Powder seems to have a toxic trait of smoothing over other people's problems. That sort of, "everything's fine! we're fine! he's fine!" attitude that happens when someone is so afraid of the boat rocking that they ignore all conflict and with it all opportunities to grow and connect more deeply with those around them.
Her reaction to smooth it all over when alt!Benzo was confused by Ekko's reaction was so anxious. And she did this despite her own fear at the change in Ekko. When she goes "...did you just throw that?" she is so shocked she can't even understand what just happened. And yet, alt!Benzo walks in and expresses the same confusion she felt/is feeling but rather than confront Ekko and sharing her confusion with alt!Benzo, she jumps in to smooth things over. What are you talking about? Everything's fine! He's just having a little inventor moment, nothing to see here!
This is a girl who is used to "cleaning up everyone else's messes," probably for the same reason that Jinx was obsessed with not seeming weak: as a way to earn love.
(probably because her biggest mess ended up killing her sister, so for the rest of forever she will deal with that guilt by putting everyone else's emotional comfort above her own)
Alt!Powder may be more mentally stable than Jinx (by a longshot) but she is not emotionally healthy/secure in an objective sense. What probably works even worse against this toxic trait is that everyone around her is okay with her smoothing things over--she's praised for helping out Ekko and rescuing alt!Mylo. Everyone but alt!Vander is down with alt!Powder's coping mechanism for dealing with discomfort.
poor cutie.
