(about the song 'yesterday')

Q: "Apart from being the runner-up in the 'most performed' section, I think that must have been the most recorded number last year... must've been about 400 versions of it. You must have heard some of them. Is there any one that you think is a standout performance?"

JOHN: "Uhh, one by a young fellow called Paul McCartney had a sort of plaintive approach."

PAUL: (laughs)

Q: "A naive charm."

Oh, for what it’s worth, no less than John Lennon loved the song. I spent a long time talking to [photographer] Bob Gruen once, it was great as we talked about a lot of stuff that he doesn’t usually get grilled on. One of the things that came up was the times he spent with John listening to the radio. Bob singled this song out as one he and John would listen to and how much John loved the song. John took the song quite personally, and saw it as Paul sending a message to him: ‘Yeah, I know you think I only write silly love songs, but I love you.’ Bob said John specifically mentioned the ‘I love you’ refrain as being a message from Paul to him. We can speculate all we want, but I have no reason to doubt the word or memory of a guy who sat in the Dakota bedroom with John and listened to this song with him.

You could almost be forgiven for thinking “Good Night” was mine, because it’s so soft and melodic and so un-John. I believe John wrote this as a lullaby for Julian, and it was a very beautiful song that Ringo ended up singing to the accompaniment of a big string orchestra. I think John felt it might not be good for his image for him to sing it but it was fabulous to hear him do it, he sang it great. We heard him sing it in order to teach it to Ringo and he sang it very tenderly. John rarely showed his tender side, but my key memories of John are when he was tender, that’s what has remained with me; those moments where he showed himself to be a very generous, loving person. I always cite that song as an example of the John beneath the surface that we only saw occasionally. I think that was what made us love John, otherwise he could be unbearable and he could be quite cruel. Now that I’m older, I realize that his hostility was a cover-up for the vulnerability that he felt, and if you look at his family history it’s easy to see why. But this is an example of that tender side.

The only thing you done was yesterday And since you've gone you're just another day

Today, I love you more than yesterday Right now, I love you more right now

I think the last line is, ‘Now we will start as friends’. Which makes sense, as I always heard the song as a reply to Dear Friend. It’s the same tempo, the same melancholic tone and he answers the question, ‘Is it really true?’ with the opening line, ‘You know it’s true’. I was always a bit on the fence with McLennon, but I think the line, ‘I’m still in love with you’ settles it actually. It’s official now, and in the end, they let John say it to the world, which seems fitting.

Thank you! „we will start as friends“ hinting to "Dear Friend" is really interesting! There are quite a lot of years between the songs, but I can clearly see the conversation in the lyrics: Dear friend, what's the time? Is this really the border line? And if I make it through  It's all because of you

Does it really mean so much to you? Are you afraid, or is it true? I know it’s true it’s all because of you (I'm still in love with you)

Dear friend, throw the wine I'm in love with a friend of mine If we must start again well we will know for sure that I love you (that we will start as friends)

Are you a fool, or is it true? Are you afraid, or is it true? I don't wanna lose you, oh no  Abuse you or confuse you

This is very interesting because he has never mentioned this song in interviews whenever he is asked about his favorite Lennon song. He always says Across the Universe, Beautiful Boy, Julia or Strawberry Fields.

“I Remember Him Saying To Me, ‘Paul, I Worry About How People Are Gonna Remember Me When I Die.’

“I remember him saying to me, ‘Paul, I worry about how people are gonna remember me when I die.’ And it kinda shocked me. I said, ‘O.K., hold on. Just hold it right there. People are going to think you were great. You’ve already done enough work to demonstrate that.'”

“In Key West, there was a hurricane coming and we had to lay low for a couple of days and for some reason, they chose Key West. So we were in our little motel room, so we got very drunk and cried about, y’know, I dunno — how we loved each other, or something, I dunno.”

This Is Not Here Press Conference @ Everson Museum in Syracuse, NY (October 8, 1971).

Reporter: What do you think of Paul, John?

John: I’ve changed, you know, he’s still the closest friend I’ve ever had except for Yoko. So I mean I’m still close to him whatever goes on.

In terms of timeline, the next day was John’s 31st birthday, where I believe we have audio recording of John conducting a nostalgic singalong of Yesterday during the party.

“And Perhaps It Is The Greater Grief, After All, To Be Left On Earth When Another Is Gone. [...] When

“And perhaps it is the greater grief, after all, to be left on earth when another is gone. [...] When he died, all things soft and beautiful and bright would be buried with him.”  🩸

“And Perhaps It Is The Greater Grief, After All, To Be Left On Earth When Another Is Gone. [...] When

“In the darkness, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless, heavy dusk. Their hands meet, and light spills in a flood like a hundred golden urns pouring out of the sun.” 🌻

Two souls, reunited.
