my head-canon is that aang would be a rock climber. and how dare you insinuate that i'm only saying that because i'm a rock climber and i love aang with all my heart. i simply think this and i am correct because. no further questions thank u đâ€ïž
i love writing sokka, so i've thrown some of my favourite lines of his from my fanfic "the teenager in the iceberg" together, so that they can be properly appreciated <3 >:)
---
Sokka continued, his voice both indignant and commanding.âWe donât even know your name, Mr. Walking Ice Cube! What were you doing in there? Were you trying to mimic a snow-man and you got too carried away?âÂ
---
âSo, youâve brought a monster to invade the village, then? Youâre some incognito Fire Nation soldier sent in as an undercover scout? Well, Iâll have you know that Iâm the villageâs strongest warrior, a-â
âThe only warrior,â Katara chimed in, lightly elbowing Sokkaâs side, earning herself a responding glare.Â
âThe strongest warrior.â Sokka reiterated. âAnd I donât much like firebenders.â He added the words pointedly.
âAh.â Aang titled his head. âThatâs a shame. Some of my closest friends are Fire Nation.â
âOf course they are,â Sokka glared, hunching over into a defensive position and adjusting his fishing spear until it pointed directly at Aang.
---
âAppa can give us a lift?â Sokka said incredulously. He gestured at the sky bison, sprawled across the ice and looking as though he could sleep for weeks longer. âIf anything, he looks like he needs us to lift him up off the ground.â
---
Naturally, Sokka was still a skeptic. âA pulley system! Hot air from a hidden firebender! Secret underwater sea-vents! Or maybe we all ate something funny and all of this is all in our headsâŠÂ â He finished off his sentence by wiggling his fingers as if he was ready to cast a spell.
---
Sokka nodded sharply. âHeâs our responsibility, no matter how much I berated him when we met earlier. We need to find that sky monster of his, itâs the only way weâll be able to catch up with the ship.â
âAang called it a sky bison.â
âHe also didnât tell us that he was the Avatar, so Iâm not sure if we can take everything he says at face value,â Sokka pointed out as Katara rolled her eyes. He cocked a grin. âCâmon, let's go get the little guy.â
âAangâs taller than you!â Katara called after him, rushing to keep up with Sokkaâs longer strides.
âSure, in his dreams !â The decidedly-shorter-than-Aang boy called back.Â
---
âHereâs the deal, bucko.â Sokka said matter of factly, accompanying his words with sharp gestures and exaggerated syllables, as if Appa was deaf. âYour friend needs your help, and WE need YOUR help to get to him. You get the picture?â Without waiting for any kind of affirmation, Sokka nodded briskly then scrambled up to Appaâs back, settling into what appeared to be the driver's seat.Â
Appa did not move, didnât even blink.
Sokka blinked, utterly bewildered. âHow do we get him to, yâknow, go ?â
---
âHeâs not gonna-â Sokka started, but as Katara slid onto Appaâs back, they felt him begin to levitate. Sokka huffed, crossing his arms dramatically. âSpirits, I hate when youâre right and Iâm wrong.â Too concerned to snap a retort back at Sokka, Katara just settled down into her seat, anxiously picking at the leather of her coat.Â
---
Katara awoke to the loud shout of her brother.Â
âWakey wakey, lovebirds!â he yelped, chucking a rock-hard stick of seal jerky at both of them.Â
âOuch, Sokka!â Katara snapped at him, rubbing her head at the spot where she had been hit, before realising that she was leaning against Aang and immediately jumping away, blushing furiously.Â
---
he's so sassy and funny i love sokka so much
subscribing to a fic isnât enough I need the author to blast a bat signal into the night sky whenever they update
this one's for all the kataang shippers that got a little sad every time they saw absolute husband aang slander in a zutara fanfic.
OR: the common zutara trope of "zuko helps katara escape an unhealthy relationship with aang" is flipped entirely and completely on its head.
...
The liveliness of this mountaintop temple was nothing like the cold quiet that she had felt in Zukoâs castle these last few years. After she and her friends had saved the world, ending the Fire Lordâs reign, Katara had found herself at a crossroads. Although it made the most sense, she couldnât bring herself to return back home, to the Southern Water Tribe. The memories were⊠too much.
Sokka had extended an offer for her to join him at the Northern Water Tribe, where he planned to find a teacher to aid him in mastering the traditional non-bending fighting styles of their people, but Katara just couldnât bring herself to go back there, either. Toph and Aang were both headed to reconstruct important cultural monuments destroyed during the war, including the Air temples. She had considered coming with them, she really had, but ultimately⊠she made a different choice.Â
...
So she had stayed with Zuko.Â
Through his breakup with Mai, she had been the one he came to.
Through his first year as the Fire Lord, she was at his side. Attended every meeting, talked through his ideas, dragged him out to social events when he felt so in over his head that he would sit paralyzed in his room. That closeness had turned into something else the first night that he had kissed her.
...
And after what felt like years of quiet complacency and mild agreement, Katara felt her temper awaken, flicker. She calmed herself, reasoned that she didnât know what he was doing with them. He could be checking for threats on her life, for poison sealed into an envelope. She held fast onto that tiny scrap of belief that he was still the man she had married, trusted, loved and been loved by.
Until that last thread of hope and trust was pulled taunt and then snapped entirely when Katara slipped into his office and found them.Â
There were entire drawers of letters with her name on them.
...
Her attention drifted to the bottom of the bag. To Aang's scrolls. The ones she still hadnât let herself read.
...
Katara,
Howâs the fire palace? Started any underground dance clubs yet? I guess theyâd be pretty tricky to start right under the nose of the new Fire Lord. Is Zuko adjusting well? Iâm a bit worried about the burden of dismantling an entire empire falling squarely on his shoulders. Do you think I should head back, stick around for some peacekeeping? Give me any reason to come to be with you help, and I will.
Yours, Aang.
...
(Fire Lady) Katara,
I heard by word of mouth from a few Fire Nation travellers that passed through the Western Air Temple that you and Zuko had gotten married. Congratulations are in order, of course, but⊠Sokka, Toph, your dad and I never got our invitations. Was it a Fire-Nation-only event, or something? Your dad is pretty broken up about it. Sokka and I tried to console him, but heâs fairly upset, and honestly? Iâm worried about you, Katara. This doesn't seem like you. You donât sound like yourself.
Yours, always, Aang
...
She selected a third scroll, dated only a month before.
Katara,
I canât deny that Iâm concerned about how youâre doing. Especially considering that the Katara I know would never shut down every single opportunity to see her friends. We donât mean to be overbearing, but we love you. So much. If all the new duties that come with being wife to the Fire Lord are too much, please, please, talk to any of us. Talk to me. I care about you, Katara, I always have, and I miss my best friend.
Forever yours, Aang.
Katara slid the scroll closed before her tears could drop onto it, and she quietly packed the papers away. She reached up, rubbing those tears away furiously the way she did as a child whenever Sokka called her a crybaby. The attempt to hold the tsunami of emotion back was fruitless. She doubled over, shoulders shaking with sobs.
She knew where she would go once the cargo ship reached the land.Â

i present- "you with the dark curls, you with the watercolor eyes"
years ago, the spirits tui and la split the earth between the sky and the sea. however, they did not lose all hope for the rejoining of earth's peoples- tui blessed one avian a generation with the gifts of the mighty avatar, while la carefully selected one siren to grow into the role of the painted lady. the two were their little sliver of hope- hope that one day, the siren and the air-rider would fulfill their destiny, would find a way to reunite the tribes, would be able to root out the poison seeping through the land.
OR: a KATAANG AU where aang is a winged avian and katara is a siren!!!
the following are excerpts from this in-progress work: <3
ââșËł â§àŒ ËËË âĄ ËËËàŽŻ â©
Avatar Aang had been told time and time again that to venture across the surface of the sea when the moon had risen and claimed what rightfully belonged to it was to sign your own death certificate.Â
And yet, he found himself here, at the waterâs edge, skipping stones, lost in thought.
To be the Avatar had once meant something, years before. Before the four tribes had separated, scattered to the ends of the earth. Those who formed fire itself chased the other tribes from the surface lands, those who could move rock and metal burrowed underground, those who flowed with the air sent ships with great sails across the sea until they reached towering mountain spires.
Those who bent water, who bent blood⊠they retreated to the depths of the sea, and with time, they became a part of it. Legend told of the way in which the Water tribes had adapted, two legs smoothed into razor sharp scales and voices twisted into something dark and luring.
Now, they were the monsters known as sirens.
ââșËł â§àŒ ËËË âĄ ËËËàŽŻ â©
As if in answer, the winds of the sea whispered back his own song, the melody made haunted. He made to turn himself away, to find shelter for the night, but that very whispering gave him pause. There was a different quality about it, something feminine, not simply his own voice reflected back. His instincts told him to duck, to crawl, and he did, bracing himself against a stone at the beachâs edge. The sound was louder here. He turned around the rock, wincing in anticipationâŠ
âŠOnly to be met with the sight of the most beautiful woman he had ever had the pleasure of seeing. He understood all at once why so many men had fallen prey to the charms of the siren.
For this girl to even gift him a wayward glance, he would build a temple. A religion.Â
She looked like a painting come to life, a sculpture kissed by the spirits themselves.
ââșËł â§àŒ ËËË âĄ ËËËàŽŻ â©
âI thought that sirens made a point of dragging Airriders to the depths of the ocean long before either party exchanged names.â
âDid you truly think so little of me?â
âThe legends seem to think very little of you, at least. Me? Iâm still making up my mind.â Aang tossed her a teasing grin.
âYou seem fairly calm for a man who believes his fate to be sealed.â Katara raised her eyebrows, crossing her slender arms over one another.
âIf my destiny is to spend the last few moments of my life at the side of such a lovely enchantress, who am I to fight it?â
âHandsome and a charmer. Is that your plan, to lull and seduce me into a sense of false security so that you can send a blast of air at my gills and leave me stranded in the bay?â
âIf Iâm remembering correctly, you are meant to be the lulling seductress of the two of us.â
ââșËł â§àŒ ËËË âĄ ËËËàŽŻ â©
He smiled down at her, reaching out to take her hand in his and press his lips against her perfect skin. âPleased to make your acquaintance, Lady Katara.â
She pushed herself up off of her elbows, reaching up to brush her lips against his cheek. âThe pleasure has been all mine, Airrider Aang.â With that, she slipped back under the waves of the sea, and Aang was left to wonder if the entire exchange of words had been nothing more than the spirited imaginings of a madman stranded and drowned at sea.

Aang Makes a Betrothal Necklace. (ln response to this post.)
"so i will go to secret gardens in my mind":
after he and katara's escape to the palace gardens the night prior, avatar aang, the king of all four elements, cannot stop thinking of the beautiful dark-haired water princess. misunderstandings and deliberate deception constructed by regent ozai makes the reconciliation of these star-crossed lovers more complicated than necessary. OR: the second of many kataang regency-era works â
"youâre in the wind, iâm in the water":
aang has only just been crowned as the avatar, the king of all four elements, and already, he struggles to find his footing in a society without any of his people. a dance with princess katara of the water tribe, and a subsequent escape to the palace gardens, helps him find that footing. OR: the first of many kataang regency-era works â
"there's a star-man, waiting in the sky":
a flash-fiction atla modern AU in which yue passes away from cancer early in life, and sokka becomes an astronaut so that he can go to space and be close to the moon she always loved so much âŸ
"the teenager in the iceberg"- multichap
i feel like a lot of people have wondered how different atla as a whole would be if aang had been older, so in this au, aang was frozen at age 16! naturally, i just had to flip aang being after katara from day one to katara now having a crush on aang from the very beginning. essentially, to recap. ATLA aang aged up AU fic. kataang. where she falls first, and he falls harder. also, cmon. i just had to write a new version of the scene where zuko and aang meet.

"well, my (not-yet) boyfriend's in a band":
in which the gaang are in a band, and when it comes time for them to write an original song to submit to the republic city music festival, aang is...suspiciously good at writing love song lyrics OR kataang, if they were in an indie band and aang didn't know how to communicate his feelings except through writing love songs
"iâm no longer a kid, and everything has changed":
after aang falls to azula's lightning strike in the caves of the earth kingdom, toph, sokka, and katara are left to pick up the pieces. katara's healing abilities are put to the test in the weeks that follow, but she finds herself seeing aang in a different light as she realizes how much he's endured since emerging from the iceberg only months before. OR: the weeks-long gap between the end of season two and the beginning of season three of ATLA is finally at least partially expanded upon. ALSO OR: a bit of aangst, or kataangst, if you will
"can you see me using everything to hold back?":
Katara's life after saving the world was filled with a whirlwind romance with Fire Lord Zuko that became a loveless, controlling marriage she is no longer happy in. After finding out the extent to which her husband has betrayed her trust, she escapes to find home in the person she has missed most during her time in the Fire Nation. OR: The common Zutara trope of "Zuko helps Katara escape an unhealthy relationship with Aang" is flipped entirely and completely on its head.
"my heart is yours, itâs you that i hold on to":
The war has been ended, Ozai has been rendered helpless, and Zuko has reclaimed the Fire Nation with the promise of peace. Everything that Aang has been working towards since the moment Katara freed him from the iceberg has been done. He's saved the world. Now, all that's left is to confess to his forever girl. OR Aang wakes up the morning after him and his friends saved the entire world, and the first (and only) thing he can think about is Katara. When they get a chance to talk, the two take a walk down memory lane.
"shining down on me":
sokka can't stop thinking about yue. she comes to him in his dreams, and try as he might, he just can't move on. inspired by the song "my love, mine all mine" by mitski
"the avatar's adventures in parenting":
aang being a bad parent is CHARACTER ASSASSINATION and i won't stand for it. i just know that him and katara wouldn't be focused on just passing on bending, but the *teachings* and ideals of both of their tribes to all their children, regardless of bending status. OR, aang and katara become parents and aang finds out that parenting is his proudest achievement, more so than stopping a hundred year war or holding the position of avatar
"i'm trying to tell you something, something that i already said":
katara speaks to each member of the gaang individually and finds out that aang has been head over heels with her for years and no one ever bothered telling her. this takes place after the fire lord is defeated, but in my version, they never kissed in the finale:oo katara is basically dumb in terms of love and so is aang and they are peak miscommunication trope and theres too much zutara content and not enough kataang OR katara interrogates each of her friends (toph, sokka, and zuko) and comes to the conclusion that she has lived for years without the kind of love most people wish for their entire lives
The two are finally free from all the responsibilities placed upon them by the war and the world- now, loving one another no longer means neglecting their sense of duty.
OR: Aang wakes up the morning after him and his friends saved the entire world, and the first (and only) thing he can think about is Katara. When they get a chance to talk, the two take a walk down memory lane.
---
For a moment, in his still dream-addled mind, Aang wondered what he had done to wake up this way, only to have the memories rush back the moment his fingers lightly grazed the marks. For the first time in technically a century, a looming deadline of responsibility and unfulfillable promises wasnât hanging over him.
Had it really only been yesterday when he and his friends had saved the world?
---
He remembered seeing that Katara was okay and feeling the relief so intensely that it felt as though it had reached his soul. Holding her for probably a couple seconds too long. Not wanting to let go, out of relief that she hadnât been hurt.
---
From his place on the floor, bending a sphere of air for Momo to play with, Aang watched his friends bicker over Sokkaâs drawing of them and felt so overwhelmed with emotion that he could hardly contain it. He had needed to grow up so quickly in the last year, all of them had. War had pushed them so far- each of them had lost so much, and yet, they could still smile. Could live in the peaceful world they deserved. That Aang would now be able to help create.Â
Aang felt tears prick his eyes as he wondered what Gyatso would say if he had seen what Aang had done. If he knew that Aang finally stopped running from destiny.Â
---
He turned to look at her, and spirits , she took his breath away. She pulled him in, and he wrapped his arms around her, burying his head in her neck, savouring in the reminder that she was okay , that they were okay , that they would have time now.
---
Guru Pathik was insane, absolutely crazy, for thinking anyone could ever choose cosmic energy over this girl.Â
---
When Katara had excused herself early, saying that she had to grab a few things, Aang waited until she left the hall before jumping up from his seat.
âI have to- uh- um- A-Avatar things. To grab, from, from my room? And I should probably- uh- check on Appa. See how the, um, sleeping on the balcony⊠went?â
â...Mhm.â Toph deadpanned, âSure, Twinkletoes. Just in case you were wondering, Miss Sugar Queenâs on her way to the gardens right now. You can catch up with her if you take the stairs to your left and make a couple of turns.â She elbowed Aang, hard enough to crack a rib or two. âGo get her, tigerdillo.â
---
âAs much as I hate to admit it, youâre right. It wasnât the time, no matter how much I wanted it to be.â He bit his lip nervously, then reached for her hands, pulling them between the two. The water she had been bending splashed back down into her lap, and after she gave a startled giggle, Aang helped her bend the droplets of water from her skirt. He took her hands in his once more, caressing her skin gently with his fingertips.Â
âBut⊠now could be that time. If you wanted it to be.â He breathed the words, looking into her shining, ocean-blue eyes.
