Germany had so much renewable energy on May 8, 2016, that it had to pay citizens to use electricity. It was so windy and sunny that turbines and solar power sources were supercharged, output exceeded demand, and prices went negative, so customers were actually paid to consume energy. Source

this is your periodic reminder that social issues are horribly complex, nuanced, and interrelated. if you hear someone propose a solution or action or way to move forward that includes the word “just,” it is likely an inadequate and insufficient solution. some things i have heard proposed:

we just need to focus on gun control

we just need to focus on homophobia

we just need to put more scrutiny on men who abuse their female partners

we just need to ban islam/deport muslims

we just need more good guys carrying guns

we just need to focus on toxic masculinity

i feel confident that none of those actions, taken alone, would completely prevent mass shootings like the one that happened this weekend. so when you hear people say “this isn’t about homophobia, it’s about guns” or “this isn’t about guns, it’s about islamic terrorism,” you can say, “it’s actually about all of those things, all of those things at once, and probably some more things, also.” 

i am very thankful that so many people are trying to understand what happened and figure out how to make sure it never happens again. (less happy about the NRA/trump talking points being wheeled out, obviously.) and i hope that people keep pushing on all these levers, tugging on all these strings, in hopes that all of our collective work will be enough to dismantle whatever structures or pressures permit or facilitate these things in happening.

Waking up this morning to the news about the shooting at Pulse in Orlando, and the predictable flowering of ignorance and hatred around it, so let’s be clear: This is the deadliest mass shooting in US history. It took place at a gay club filled with a diverse crowd, including numerous people of colour. It took what should have been a playful sanctuary and turned it into an abattoir.

This has nothing to do with the race or religion of the perpetrator.

This has everything to do with the systematic homophobia and transphobia built into the very fabric of US society, from state-mandated sexual education curricula telling youth that queerness is a ‘choice’ or 'abhorrent lifestyle’ to legislation banning transgender women from using the bathroom to outdated and unscientific FDA guidelines barring men who have sex with men from donating blood for at least one year after their last sexual encounter. This is about homophobia spouted left and right from legislators who refuse to crack down on hate crimes, about tolerance for hate at the highest levels of government.

This is about out systemic inaction on gun control, and the tired expression on the president’s face today as he tried to articulate, yet again, that the country needs to do something. It is about the hundreds of hypocritical, vile legislators and candidates who proudly trumpeted their thoughts and prayers while knowing full well that they voted down assault weapons bans and other checks on gun ownership. It is about the presidential candidate who took to Twitter today to congratulate himself on being 'right on radical Islamic terrorism’ and insisting that the president 'resign in disgrace.’

You’re killing us, America. The choices that you are making are killing us. And now, you want to pit us against our Muslim brothers and sisters, labeling this an act of 'Islamic terrorism’ because it happened to be committed by a Muslim man. You think that you can distract us from your institutional homophobia and transphobia by evoking a bogeyman, and it’s not going to work. I stand with all my queer and trans siblings today, and I stand with all my Muslim siblings, including those who are queer and trans. I stand against hatred, against this country’s refusal to engage with its gun problem. I stand with the as yet unknown number of people who are waking up this morning facing acquired disabilities and lengthy stays in rehab because a homophobic man decided to come shoot up their safe space.

I stand for a world where I don’t have to write things like this anymore.

Baby Capybaras Born at Belfast Zoo

Belfast Zoo keepers are hearing the ‘pitter patter’ of tiny webbed Capybara feet as the parents, Charlie and Lola, welcomed four pups on May 10. Capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) are the largest rodent species in the world. These rodents are found in South America and are semi-aquatic mammals. They have webbed feet and can stay underwater for up to five minutes, which allows them to hide from predators. In fact, their scientific name even means ‘water hog’… (Learn more here.)

The Numbers Are In: The War on Cops Is a Right-Wing Myth

Policing is safer than it's been in years.

According to the FBI, 2015 was one of the safest years on record to be a police officer in America. Agency data shows 41 officers were killed in the line of duty last year, a drop of 20 percent from one year prior. Only in 2013, when felonious police fatalities hit an historic all-time low, were fewer officers killed while doing their jobs. The year 2015 tied with 2008 for the second lowest death rate for police on record…
