How White Fandom is Colonizing “Character-Coding”

It’s time for fandom (particularly, white fandom) to learn what “character-coding” is and how they’ve been misusing it.

When characters of color and their actors are vulnerable to racial scrutiny, it should be quite clear why fandom’s desire to suggest white characters are meant to be seen and sympathized with as people of color is a problem.

I finally sat down and finished what I set out to do months ago and wrote an article on how white fandom has misused and abused the term “coding” to suggest their favorite white characters are meant to be seen as people of color.

Trigger Warnings: Racism, a little bit of fatphobia, and some ableism (in the screenshots).

3) most corporations wouldn’t touch pride with a 10-foot pole and openly showing support was a one-way ticket to lost revenue

4) rupaul’s drag race aired on LOGO, an exclusively lgbtq-content-driven satellite channel

5) hearing “transgender life” in “born this way” was actually a huge moment for trans folk

6) lady gaga promoted self-acceptance and love in most ways artists wouldn’t even consider doing today; she openly embraced her camp side and her massive lgbtq fan base

how crazy the world can change in 10 years. i love you, mother monster. because of “born this way”, i was able to fully embrace who i was. you changed the game. paws up forever. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

[this is heavenly inspired by both European folklore and The Originals - along with some other stuff]

Abilities

Appearance: two fangs on the top row teeth (retractable), pointy ears (shape shift), red eyes (human blood) or red/gold-ish eyes (animal blood), and cold skin

Savage mode appearance: eyes darken, fangs and pointy ears show, and veins pop out along the body and face - the vampire will also lose some of their sanity in search for blood

Can appear human

Can transform into a bat (normal size)

Immortal at the age they were bit

Immune to all sickness

Nocturnal

Super strength

Super speed

Super agility

Quick healing; able to regrow limbs

Hypnosis (control minds)

Weakness

Only killed by decapitation, burned at the stake (fire), or a wooden stake throw the heart

Becomes weak and in pain the more they last without a drink of blood

Gets burns from sunlight if exposed and in it for too long

Doesn’t attack anyone wearing a cross (like a necklace or on a crown) – a symbol of religion which protects from evil

“Vampire Creation” (turning someone into a vampire)

Can only transform someone into a vampire if they drain most of the blood from the person and replace it with their own

Both the vampire and person will feel weak for 24 hours

After 24 hours, the person becomes a vampire

New vampire will immediately want blood and will go savage for it
