Improving Flow In Writing

Improving Flow In Writing

Rhythm, pattern, and sound matter more in writing than you may think, but it’s often overshadowed by stress on other elements that make a story pleasant to the mind.

Repetition. This is pretty self-explanatory.

Use of words that don’t fit the situation (Especially in dialogue. If a character is laid back and simple in their speech, they aren’t going to use a word like “demonstrably”).

Redundant sentences ~ to quote this article :

“She nodded her head in agreement.

She nodded. (We know it’s her head and we know a head nod signifies agreement.)”

Bad punctuation. Keep in mind that a period is a stop in speech, while a comma is more of a pause. This can make a massive difference in the way the story flows. Commas are your friends.

Breaks in story. Carefully choose where paragraphs start and end, as well as chapters or scenes. You want the end of each paragraph to hint at a transition into the next.

Pay attention to sentence length. This may not be a shock, but sentence length is one of the most important things to pay attention to when creating flow. Barbara Tuchman, winner of two Pulitzer prizes, has a tip for her readers, in terms of sentence length: 3 long sentences, two short “staccato” sentences. Sentences that are all the same length are boring!

A few highlights from the best article I found on flow which you can find HERE:

“ Action scenes contain few distractions, little description, and limited transitions. Omit or limit character thoughts, especially in the midst of danger or crisis, since during a crisis people focus solely on survival. To create poignancy, forgo long, descriptive passages and choose a few details that serve as emotionally charged props instead. “ On Action Scenes

“ When the outcome of a scene or chapter is left hanging, the pace naturally picks up because the reader will turn the page to find out what happens next…  If your characters are in the midst of a conversation, end  the scene with a revelation, threat, or challenge. “ On Cliffhangers

“ Reactions, descriptions, and attributions are minimal. Don’t create dialogue exchanges where your characters discuss or ponder.“ On Dialogue

“ Suspense and, by extension, forward movement are created when you prolong outcomes.” On Prolonged Outcomes

“ Summary is a way of trimming your word count and reserving scenes for the major events. You can also summarize whole eras, descriptions, and backstory. Summaries work well when time passes but there is little to report, when an action is repeated or when a significant amount of time has passed.” On Summary

“ Think concrete words (like prodigy and iceberg), active voice (with potent verbs like zigzag and plunder), and sensory information that’s artfully embedded. If you write long, involved paragraphs, try breaking them up.” On Word Choice and Sentence Structure

Pirates of the Caribbean spoilers!!!!

I really think that Hector Barbosa is dead (even though I don’t like it). He’s death was so sad but at the same time meaningful it just made me cry. I also loved the fact that he was a father, only for some hours though. The main reason that I think he is dead is because of Jack’s line when he says “I have a reunion beyond the horizon” or something like that. I think he’s going to look for Hector just like everyone looked for him in the third movie

Well now I just wanna see Goose put her hat on Ghost

Hehehe

“What’s this?” Simon asks, tipping your hat back. You swat his fingers away and push your brim back down.

“It’s nothing.”

“Didn’t look like nothing.” He raises a brow, staring you down, you can tell he’s smiling under his mask.

“Shouldn’t you just be happy I’m not stealing your hat today?” You frown at him, swatting his hand away again when he reaches for your brim.

“I like when you steal my hat.” You really hate how many butterflies he conjures in you just saying that.

“Only because you know you’ll get lucky later,” You gripe, letting him hook his fingers in your belt loops and tug you closer.

“Maybe,” He says, “Maybe I just like seeing you wear it.”

More butterflies, you push at his face, cover his eyes so he doesn’t see you blush. It’s too early for him to be this smooth. What ever happened to him ignoring you where your dad could see?

“You don’t wanna see me with your claim?” Simon asks behind your hand.

“That’s different.” You tell him, it feels different at least. Feels less like a game and more like something… permanent. You wonder if he feels the same way about you stealing his hat these days.

“Doesn’t have to be.” Simon plucks your hat from your head, leaning down to let you swipe his.

You make an annoyed noise and grab his hat, watching him replace it with yours. It doesn’t really fit, but neither of you thought it would. You shove his hat onto your head and storm off to find a chore to do away from Simon’s too pleased smile.

He tips the brim of your hat down to check on the dark black he’d spotted against the chocolate felt. It’s his name. “Simon” spelled out in neat letters along the edge. He runs his thumb over the burnt felt, the brand you must’ve put on just for you, and now him, to see. That explains the attitude. You’re so cute when you’re embarrassed.

Ah, he’s gonna have to reward you for this later.

Thieves Guild

The timeline of the Thieves Guild has always bothered me

Karliah says that it’s been twenty five years since Mercer murdered Gallus and she’s been in exile. Now, even with how young some of the characters look in the game, I’m willing to put Mercer Frey at a max age of 50. He is a SENIOR member of the Guild, and Guild Master. At the absolute YOUNGEST I’d say he’s forty.

Brynjolf, on the other hand, is definitely younger than Mercer, though by no more than a decade. I like to think that the youngest someone is allowed to officially join the Guild is in their late teens, probably around 16 (though most 16 year olds are rarely talented enough to get in).

It’s implied that Brynjolf (as well as Vex and Delvin at the very least) knew Karliah (and by extension, Gallus) before Mercer became Guild Master. If Mercer. Even if Brynjolf was, at the very youngest, 16 when Gallus was murdered, that would put him now at 41 years old. And even that doesn’t make sense. I imagine Brynjolf became Mercer’s second in command not long after he took up the mantle of Guild Master, if it wasn’t immediate, and I doubt that the Guild would have been too happy with some kid traipsing around and giving out orders.

It could be argued that Mercer would do this on purpose, because a kid would be less likely to notice his thieving from the Guild, but it would have seemed more suspicious by the other members.

Now, a much more reasonable amount of time to pass between then and now is around 15 years. A decade could work, too, or even 20 years on the longer side, but the extra 5 years added on to that just throws everything out of proportion.

If it’s been 15 years since Gallus was murdered then

Mercer would have been ~30-35 and Brynjolf would have been in his late 20s. This seems MUCH more reasonable for both of them. It makes much more sense for someone who’s 35 to have enough strength and power to do a complete overthrow of a Guild and take it over than for someone who’s 25 to accomplish the same.

TL;DR - 25 years is too long and stupid and Bethesda needs to get their act together.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
