Remembering Gerda Taro (Gerta Pohorylle) on her birthday (1 August -26 July 1937) Gerda Taro is regarded as the first female photojournalist to cover the front lines of a war and to die while doing so. Taro died during her coverage of the Spanish Civil War. In a tragically short but prolific life Gerda Taro took some of the most impactful war images ever.—Guadalupe Rosales (of @veteranas_and_rucas And @map_pointz) http://ift.tt/2vks34J
In Celebration of @sbmuseart’s 75th anniversary in 2016, the museum is displaying some gorgeous highlights of the museum’s permanent collection. You can see works by Richard Diebenkorn, Claude Monet, Michael Light and Marc Chagall (get excited for LACMA’s exhibition exploring Chagall’s creations for the stage, coming this summer!) We loved walking through the galleries to take in works from modern art, photography, arts of Asia and more. #LAInstaFling #SoCalMuseums #museums #lacma #MuseumInstaSwap http://ift.tt/2t5TEmP
This type of sculpture is called a haniwa, meaning “clay ring.” Haniwa were placed on top of tombs for the wealthy elite in Japan from 300 to 600 AD. There are many surviving examples of haniwa, but this horse is extraordinarily tall, at four feet. See it now in the Pavilion for Japanese art, level 4. #lacma http://ift.tt/2rFIQOK

On view in the modern art galleries, “Actual Size” (1962) by Ed Ruscha presents an image of a life-sized can of Spam soaring like a comet, a reference to the space race between the U.S. and Russia. Going back to reality after the holiday break
A few months ago I drove around the neighbor and passed by the house I grew up in, something I hadn’t done in decades. I became really curious and wondered what it would be like to be inside that house again, a house I haven’t been in since I was 8 years old. I vividly remember the layout of the house and what it felt like in every room. I also remember sunlight coming in through the windows specially in the summer. A carpet from Carmen Argote’s childhood home —titled “720 Sq. Ft. Household Mutations - Part B” is about that to me. Objects/material as time capsules and artifacts that hold so much history. A carpet that has so many stories embedded in it. Removed from its original context, viewers are encouraged to rethink the carpet as a map, elevating it to a sculpture of historical personal narrative.

It’s Flashback Friday! Here is a photo from my physical archival project- Party crew, Together We Stand at a house party somewhere in San Gabriel Valley in 1993. I am extremely grateful to be in a position where people can trust me with their material and stories. This photo along with a thick photo album and other artifacts was donated by my friend Eileen Torres. Eileen was from a party crew called ‘Just Us Girls’ and 'Together We Stand’, two very empowering party crew names. The party scene and backyard gatherings have existed for over decades, and the youth has always found ways to create unique spaces for various reasons- whether it is a survival mechanism, a break from the norm or way of expression, it’s very important to honor that history. Shoutout goes out to the originators of the party scene and everyone who has paved the way for the new/next generation.—Guadalupe Rosales (of @veteranas_and_rucas And @map_pointz) #LACMAInstaResidency http://ift.tt/2vl3IIA
