Before emojis there were… NETSUKE 😡 A netsuke is a small sculptural object which has developed in Japan over a period of more than three hundred years. Netsuke initially served both functional and aesthetic purposes. The traditional form of Japanese dress, the kimono, had no pockets. Women would tuck small personal items into their sleeves, but men suspended their tobacco pouches, pipes, purses, writing implements, and other items of daily use on a silk cord passed behind their obi (sash). These hanging objects are called sagemono. The netsuke was attached to the other end of the cord preventing the cord from slipping through the obi. This little guy shown in the photo is titled Raconteur (Alternate Title: Rakugoka)

Now in its final week, “Toba Khedoori” (closing March 19) showcases an array of the artist’s paintings, which frequently depicts architectural forms from distanced perspectives, rendering commonplace objects and spaces familiar yet decontextualized. Catch the exhibition here before it travels to our friends at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), where it will be on view April 21–September 24, 2017. #lacma #TobaKhedoori #contemporaryart [© Toba Khedoori, photo © Fredrik Nilsen] http://ift.tt/2mpGgpy

As a guest in 1871 of the official government survey team led by Ferdinand Hayden, Moran explored the headwaters of the Yellowstone River and became the first professional artist to paint the area. While he was out in the field, Moran worked in pencil and watercolor. These watercolor field sketches were used to influence Congress in its decision to declare the Yellowstone area America’s first national park.⠀ ⠀ See the work in person in the Art of the Americas building, level 3. #lacma #painting #fourthofjuly http://ift.tt/2umgeru

In dedication to the rave and party crew subculture, I am sharing this photo of a backyard party organized by party crew, East LA Madness in East Los Angeles CA.
As teenagers we had to be creative to organize and throw parties with limited recourses before cellphones and the Internet were widely accessible. The parties also provided material for teenagers interested in photography and developing their skills as artists, unknowingly capturing an historic moment. The same was true with the Dj’s and everyone else who contributed to the events. These parties took place in warehouses and backyards throughout southern California.
Who remembers the party lines and party flyers?
If you went to any of these parties and raves, please comment below with your stories. To learn more about the rave and party crew subculture in SoCal please check out my page @map_pointz— Guadalupe Rosales (of @veteranas_and_rucas And @map_pointz) #LACMAInstaResidency Photo courtesy of my sister Maria http://ift.tt/2uDReMQ
This week, we continue to introduce the nine newly acquired objects through this past weekend’s 31st annual Collectors Committee. – “La Prose du Transsibérien et de la Petite Jehanne de France, (Prose of the Trans-Siberian and of Little Jehanne of France)", 1913, stands as one of the purest expressions of European modernism—as art, poetry, book making, and as a collaboration between Sonia Delaunay and poet Blaise Cendrars. The book is made up of a single sheet of paper, divided down the center, and folded like an accordion through twenty-two panels to the length of almost seven feet. It is meant to be seen and read at the same time, like a conductor reads an orchestral score, and is celebrated as much for its lyric beauty as for its unmatched composition of colors by Delaunay. #lacma #SoniaDelaunay #BlaiseCendrars #modernart #2017CollectorsCommittee http://ift.tt/2q7pqy9
“Ed Fella: Free Work in Due Time” (on view through July 30) centers on the artist’s After the Fact flyers. Liberated from the deadline-driven nature of professional public communication, Fella developed the flyers after the events that they announce had taken place. Join internationally acclaimed graphic designers and educators Ed Fella and Lorraine Wild this evening (Monday, March 13), 7 pm at LACMA for a conversation in conjunction with the exhibition. Visit lacma.org for more information on the program. #lacma #EdFella #regram via @lisaaaale http://ift.tt/2mDbDh7
