China: I do not “spew profanities.” I enunciate them clearly, like a fucking lady.

Heyo, I’ve noticed in some of your posts about China that you seem to always hint about there being some kind of darkness within her? Like most other sp fans depict her as kinda a selfish bitch, but like you always paint her as very serene and yet there’s something just below the surface that isn’t so pretty and I think it’s a really interesting take on her. I was wondering whether you’d mind doing one of your awesome analysis posts on what gave you that impression, if it’s not too much to ask??

woo boy, this is gonna be a long one and sorry for the wait anon but exams were killing me and this one took a while to put together, but I hope you enjoy!

So, yeah I’ve always pictured China as a person who’s very much keeping her vicious nature under control and yet, sometimes there are moments we see a part of it come out and yeah, here’s me trying to explain that!

Alright, so there’s three main things that give me this impression - China’s inner monologues, descriptions of her by those who she previously worked with e.g. Eliza Scorn, and her combat style - I’ll go through each of these sections in depth.

China’s inner monologues:

One thing I find immensely interesting when it comes to China’s inner voice and/or dialogue is that it generally seems to be in conflict, mostly in the ways she wants to accomplish her goal - often when China was forced into action in phase one, one of the first things that always is mentioned is her doing something that she wouldn’t have done before/wasn’t her first thought when it came to handling the situation - often, her initial reaction is something much more violent, cruel and brutal. Often, she has to remind herself of her supposed facade, of her grace and serenity, before she acts in a slightly less violent manner than she was considering.

EXAMPLES:

Her finger hovered by her elbow. One twitch would be all it took, and the pain would rise so suddenly their hearts would burst. Instead, she flattened her hand...

She smashed his head into the wall. It was so satisfying, making them hurt.... she felt the power snap through him and his whole body jerked wildly and he collapsed. She looked down. So, so satisfying... she closed her eyes, relaxing.

“He will not condemn me for my past actions, so long as I don’t revert to the person I once was. The war with Mevolent changed everyone who fought in it. We each saw things in ourselves that we would rather not admit to.”

“You beat me last time because I had grown complacent,” she said softly. “I had lost my edge. But I’ve had a year to get my edge back. Feel how sharp I am, Eliza?”

“You do not want to upset me,” China said, pushing her cup to one side. “You wouldn’t like me when I’m upset.”

Indeed, we even see this conflict mentioned in her dialogue when she talks to Prave:

“You know,” China said, “there was a time when nobody dared threaten me. I just wouldn’t stand for it. The amount of people I killed, of bodies I twisted and bones I snapped, all because they had allowed their anger to momentarily overwhelm their good sense. I regret it all now, of course. I was out of control. I was indulging the darkness inside me far too often. I was not, Mr Prave, a very nice person. But I have changed. I have allowed the years to mellow me....

But every once in a while, I get the urge....The urge for destruction. The urge to hurt, maim, kill. It’s quite a thing, to experience that urge, to let it wash over you, to give in to it. It’s addictive. It’s all-consuming. You lose yourself to it. It’s quite, quite wonderful. I can feel it, even as I speak, tapping around the edges of my mind, trying to prise me open, slip its fingers in. And it would be so easy to let it happen. But we’re all like that, aren’t we? We’re all barbarians at our core. We’re all savage, murderous beasts. I know I am....I know I roar very loudly indeed. How about you? Do you think you can match me?”

Simply put, China’s true nature is one a lot more impulsive and a lot more brutal than the facade she puts up.

Descriptions by others:

Secondly, one of the key things that crops up when people from her past describe her is her inclination towards violence and action - China’s neutrality is a far more foreign concept to them than it is to us as the readers, and this really does show:

EXAMPLES OF HER NATURE:

“China, because she enjoyed that kind of thing, went after your wife. By all accounts, it was a knock-down, drag-out fight.”

“Look at her face, Prave. Isn’t it a beautiful face? Isn’t it the most beautiful face you ever did see? But beauty is so deceptive. Looking at her now, you’d never guess that she was calculating the most efficient way of killing us, would you? There’s not a hint of that in those startlingly pale blue eyes. If we didn’t know better, we’d still be gazing at her, falling in love all over again, and she could walk right up and stab us through the heart, and we’d never see it coming. All because of that beautiful face.”

“What’s in the past is in the past,” China said. “I’m going to end up killing every one of you for all this, and one more name added to the list won’t make much difference.” Gallow looked at her, then at Scorn. “I thought you said she was under control.”

EXAMPLES TO DO WITH NEUTRALITY:

“It’s time to take off this mask you wear, to end this charade. You need to take your place.”

“My place is right here.”

“We both know that’s not true. You could no more turn your back on the Faceless Ones than I could. I have seen your devotion.”

“My devotion, as you call it, has waned.”

Vengeous shook his head. “You have sworn your allegiance to the dark gods. You cannot simply change your mind.”

“I expected more from you, China. When you left us, I thought you’d be back. No one could do the things you’d done and then walk away. I didn’t think it was possible.”

Practically all of them can’t believe her passivity, because to them, that isn’t the China they know and fought beside for however long. Instead, the China they describe reveals a much more darker nature than the one we see - a China who wasn’t valued because of the information she had or her manipulation of others - a China who was valued for her effective and brutal action against the cause’s enemies.

Indeed, when considering China’s role during the war it becomes much clearer that she was ultimately valued for her devotion and ferociousness, her brutality and her effectiveness

Her fighting style:

Lastly, that leads us to the final thing - China in combat.

Now, one of the criticisms I saw after Bedlam that surprised me is that people felt that when China was fighting in some chapters, it felt too ‘Tanith’ or wasn’t elegant enough.

But the thing is, China’s fighting style has always been extremely rough.

EXAMPLES:

Strength flooded her body and, when Mist reached for her, China grabbed her wrist and twisted, locking Mist’s arm straight and forcing her to her knees... China struck the back of her elbow. Mist shrieked and the elbow shattered and shards of bone ruptured the skin.

China parried the blow and chopped at Tanith’s bicep. Tanith back-pedalled, her right arm hanging uselessly, and China stepped in quickly and caught her with a solid haymaker to the jaw.... China turned her attention back to Tanith. She activated the symbols on both of her palms, then stepped up to clamp her hands on either side of Tanith’s head. Tanith arched her back and screamed.

She hurled daggers of red light and dived a rider who came at her with a sword. She slammed her forehead into his face.... “Skulduggery?” China demanded, breaking a rider’s wrist and jabbing her fingers into his eyes.

China hit him from the side... In an instant, China was leaning over him, her hand pressing against his forehead. He screamed, then went silent, but China kept her hand on his forehand, making his body jerk.

The sigils on China’s knuckles flashed into his line of sight right before she broke his nose... her fist crunched into his side, smashing ribs.

There seems to be an assumption that because China is seemingly filled with grace that her fighting style would also be this simple, effortless thing.

And in a way, it is, when one considers her discipline, with her sigils meaning she can easily defend herself in a moments notice. But China’s fighting style has never been about grace - it’s always been about effectiveness, taking down her opponent in the quickest way. Indeed, Eliza Scorn even mentions this:

“Looking at her now, you’d never guess that she was calculating the most efficient way of killing us.”

And, very often, the first thing we see China lose when she enters a fight is that grace as she practically springs into action.

EXAMPLES:

China, meanwhile, was getting down and dirty with the remaining mage. They rolled across the ground, China’s hair in her face. Finally, China simply grabbed the sorcerer’s head and slammed it down into the concrete, once, twice. Satisfied that her opponent was no longer a threat, she got up, breathing hard and looking angry.

All of these examples clearly indicate just how brutal her fighting technique is and indeed how brutal her natural response to things is.

Overall:

One of things I notice most when people simplify China’s characterisation is that they turn her into a weak, vain bitch who isn’t able to defend herself or a princess who views violence or at least being involved in combat as beneath her - the truth is, China has always been a paradox: The beautiful woman with the ugly nature, the self serving who was once devoted, the graceful creature who easily becomes the brutal killer.

Another thing people seem to forget that the China we meet in Book One is very different to the China the people who she spent the majority of her youth and adult life with expect- her neutrality, her commitment to her library and indeed her self serving nature are all very foreign to them - perhaps we should all consider why and also what she was like before she decided to leave the conflict.

Part of the reason why I love China is that there are so many hidden and unexplored parts of her personality and nature that are only hinted at - she’s not a black and white character, and often people’s perception of her changes when they try to simplify her character into something black and white.

And yeah, that’s the basics behind this headcanon!! Hope it all makes sense and if not, feel free to drop another ask or dm!!

time for a little sp meta

i’ve been wanting to do this for a long time, but it’s been rotting in my drafts box for ages and i just remembered

i’ve been thinking about it, and i think magic could possibly prevent sorcerers from getting cancer. possibly.

my reasoning, you ask? of course, cells would die more slowly, but it’s unrealistic to think that skin, blood and hair cells etc would do so, because then all sorcerers would be bald and skinless (that said, slower brain cell turnover might explain a few things).

so if these cells are renewing themselves a regular amount for centuries, it stands to reason that every sorcerer would get some form of cancer at some point due to the increased chance of cell mutations and therefore cancer. this is never discussed, so we can either assume that a) they are immune, or b) they’ve found a cure

i think that if they had found a cure, somebody like kenspeckle grouse would have leaked it to mortals for the greater good, but since that’s also never discussed, we can (again) assume that that’s not the case and consider that sorcerers are (possibly) immune to cancer

this is 100% canon!!

hey it's niche, overly specific, barely canon-compliant theory time so that i can convince myself to write this into my fic

okay so for some reason i headcanon skulduggery's wife as being called annalise? idk that's just what i call her in my head so that's what i'll call her here

annalise was caught up in the war early - by the time she was fourteen, she was helping her father (kenspeckle grouse) with healing wounded mages, and in herself was a pretty good healer. during this time, she meets skulduggery; a couple of years older, ran away from home and met ghastly on the way, and they signed up for the war together

things are dire, everyone knows too well that each day may be their last and annalise and skulduggery are close. in a relationship, in fact.

skulduggery comes close to dying one day, and annalise brings him back from the brink of death. at this stage, he's eighteen, she's sixteen. he proposes where he is, and as a spur of the moment thing, she says yes.

the wedding is messy and fast and barely a ceremony, but they're in love and everything is such a brash decision now that they want to savour their relationship for as long as they can. everything is good, or something.

annalise starts to get caught up with everything - she's struggling to find a purpose to this war, she's eighteen years old and married for two and watching her husband be battered to bits on a regular basis and going through that too, she's seeing death and blood and gore and everything awful around her and she's just so sick of it and wants it to end.

slowly, the idea of the church of the faceless starts to appeal to her. she was brought up in it as a child, her mother's family devout worshippers before her father took her away. it's something familiar enough that it's impossible not to fall back into.

slowly, she becomes more desperate. finds herself flitting between sides secretly, finds herself on mevolent's side. it was never supposed to be like this, but now she's her own faceless one - nobody knows what she looks like. she's simply a name, someone spoken about from the shadows, managing to push herself into power. nobody knows what she looks like, only that she is powerful and devout and someone who knows secrets, who holds knowledge.

skulduggery is clueless, unknowing about the way his wife leaves his side on "missions" and comes back, only for the church to have gained information, power - all from the hands of this unknown woman.

rumours, of course, start to spread. they say she is too beautiful to look at, and that is why she stays hidden. she must be older than time itself to have all of this information, and yet looks so young. she flits through mevolent's castle, seen as nothing more than a low-ranking convert, unknown and worthless. nobody associates the name known by all with that young, young face.

annalise is nineteen, and wakes, one day, to her lover's dead body beside her. she is alive, and realises that someone must know. this is a warning.

within two days, she is back at her husband's side, saying nothing about where she was. nine months later, the baby comes.

it has been three years. there is still that unknown enemy, the woman with a face beautiful enough to make men give their lives for her, and yet it is a face known by none. their daughter is three, now, and looks nothing like skulduggery. annalise knows that he'll start to suspect soon, knows that his suspicion of her unfaithfulness to him could lead to more.

one night, she leaves. releases her reflection, her child's reflection, orders them to hide until the time is right. and annalise runs.

three days of travel, alone, her child in her arms. three days and she meets a witch, offers her a deal.

a new face. a new face, one which will make men give their lives for her. a new identity, a new life.

“and,” says the witch, “what will i gain in return?”

her magic. her healing. she is young, only had her surge a year ago, and yet she is strong. stronger than she should be.

the witch accepts, and annalise brings her reflection to mevolent's castle, lures skulduggery in, and watches him die.

perhaps, in a few hundred years, she will allow herself to feel remorse. but not now. for now, she has power and a new identity to fill.

years pass. the child picks the name solace, and when skulduggery pleasant meets china sorrows for the first time, he notices her eyes. they are beautiful, a pale blue, just like his wife's once were.

four hundred years later, china still finds herself looking at her husband for longer than she should.

stop shaming people for being passionate about the things that they love. stop mocking people for having unusual interests. like, honestly, i'm so tired of feeling embarrassed for being "too much". if being too much means having deep interests that fill my life with romanticism and excitement, then let me be!!! i'd much rather listen to anyone ranting about their latest obsession with 16th century swords than have a boring ordinary conversation with those who shame passionate people

Valkyrie Cain

As always with these SP para posts, there are spoilers for the Skulduggery Pleasant series below. Also, I’m putting in a trigger warning for discussions of mental issues, unhealthy coping mechanisms and drug use. Stay safe!

Valkyrie is part of the Rouges Paracosm and comes from the Skulduggery Pleasant book series. Some of her close friends, especially Tanith Low, call her Val. She is a sorcerer and has practised a number of magical disciplines like necromancy and elemental magic. However, she has developed an unusual set of powers which include energy-throwing and sensitive magic. Valkyrie is bisexual and is dating a woman named Militsa Gnosis. She used to date Fletcher Renn. She is Irish and lives in County Dublin.

Valkyrie is tall and very muscular. She has long, dark hair and dark eyes. She has a “tattoo” which is actually a symbol which was carved into her arm in order to help her defeat a certain enemy.

Valkyrie wears a lot of black clothing. She has a jacket, tailored by her late friend Ghastly Bespoke, which is incredibly durable and able to block bullets, blades and other weapons from breaking through and hurting her. Although she is not all that fond of traditionally “feminine” clothing, Valkyrie does not entirely shy away from wearing skirts and dresses, but she usually only does so at formal events.

Valkyrie, like her friend Skulduggery, is witty, sarcastic and has a dry sense of humour. She too is a great detective and very intelligent. Valkyrie is quite defiant and doesn’t respect authority figures without good reason to. She doesn’t suffer fools gladly and always speaks her mind. She went through many traumatic events throughout her teen years and has developed quite a few mental problems related to depression, anxiety and possibly even PTSD. Because of this, Valkyrie has gained some not-so-healthy coping mechanisms. She uses “splashes of magic” which are, to put it simply, the sorcerer equivalent of nicotine patches. As well as a music box which puts her in a trance-like state for hours on end and stops her from experiencing intrusive thoughts.

The war between the sanctuaries lasted roughly two months, so Val´s been on her period at least once during that time, right?

I can so imagine her being even grumpier than usual and of course it has to coincidence with a mission where they have to hike for several days AGAIN. That´s downright annoying on a good day, but when she´s on her period Val is fuckin angry, because it HURTS and all she wants is a nice hot-water bottle and some chocolate. Instead she has to walk the whole freakin day.

The other dead men are really confused. They can clearly tell she´s in pain, but they have no idea what´s going on. Even Skulduggery can´t tell. He´s been a skeleton for so long that he just doesn´t consider some basic human functions anymore. Anyways, it takes them so long to figure it out that it´s downright embarrassing. But once they figure it out, they make a point of buying her chocolate as soon as they are back from the mission and even after the war, after Valkyrie was gone for five years, Skulduggery continues bringing her chocolate once a month. Gotta keep the monster fed if you don´t wanna get chewed out yourself.

Valkyrie just thinks it´s creepy that he knows better when she´s gonna be on her period the next time than she does herself. Like what the fuck? There´s observant and then there´s creepy, Skulduggery! She doesn´t mind the chocolate though. That´s always welcome.

Playing with Fire cover comparisons

Annnnd we’re back! This time with PWF, which in my opinion is rather underrated? Definitely not the best book in the series, but I like it better than the other middle books. YEAH, GET READY FOR UNPOPULAR OPINIONS. Also, apparently almost every country universally decided the main character gets to appear, so this time there’s lot of Val! Yay!

Anyway, this list has some weird mixups. Let’s go.

1.

image

Indonesian Cover

In my opinion? The best Skulduggery Pleasant cover, ever. It’s beautifully drawn, the compositions great, the PERSONALITY!! the font is not the greatest (that blue is… out of nowhere) but good god I will forgive for that BEAUTIFUL val. this is the only official art i’ve ever seen that actually looks like a pretty teenage girl, so, props. I also love the hand tucked into her jacket. “yeah, im shooting fire, but it’s not a big deal.”

also, indonesian artist learned to draw skeletons!! it is kinda weird to see him standing far back not doing anything, but it works better here than other places…

2.

image

UK Hardcover

This and #3 are really close, but this is probably one of my favorites of the original hardcovers. I like the lemon/lime color scheme, and the composition is great - maybe the best of all of them. The hands popping up out of the frame really work, and the splatter effects actually look good here! Yay! I … kinda suspect someone else did the composition here, lol. Not sure how I feel about the bats, but. Eh.

3.

image

Thai Cover

im sorry about the sticker/website, this is the biggest I could find :,(

ANYWAY! DAMN! Once again, love the framing, and especially love the hand creeping out! The chains are great, the fiery background is great … also the grotesquery is creepy as fuck, much scary then any of the art Percival’s done of it. thoo…. why put the villain on the front cover, is my question?

4.

image

UK paperback.

It’s okay. Playing wirth fire, so… Skulduggery plays with fire. Composition is good, colors are good. Not much to say.

5.

image

Bulgarian Cover

Yay, Val!! And Skul lurking protectively in the background. This one mostly comes down to me not liking the art style much. Also val’s weird very ooc (and age inappropriate??) top. Aight.

6.

image

US Ebook

You know how I said the Indonesian/Bulgarian covers with Skul standing back worked? Yeah, this is an example of one that.. doesn’t. Seriously, there are vampires coming at them and Skulduggery is … actually, I’m not sure what Skulduggery is doing. What is he looking at? … SKULDUGGERY, SHE’S 13.

Speaking of that background, it’s awful. I can’t believe we’re only about halfway down the list and it’s already this dismal. Oy vey.

This is a cute Val, though. Yay. Why does Val never age in Percival’s covers? Questions, questions.

7.

image

US Hardcover

this is hilariously awful to me in the way the czech cover of book 1 is. it’s just so HIDEOUS, I LOVE IT. i bought a copy of this in powell’s and it’s my ugly baby

people do not run like this. I mean, for one, they do not hover off the ground like this, but the arms should be opposite the legs (so right leg forward, right arm back). Both of them are wearing brown, for some reason? Val’s coat is super short? i don’t know, man. I don’t know.

8.

image

Serbian Cover

It’s a massive improvement over the last cover, though it’s still a mess. Their photoshopping is a bit more coherent, at least. Look at val’s emo bangs. And I’m sure she’s very proud to be 2 inches taller than Skulduggery.

Also, the bats return. Were there bats in this book??

9.

image

Czech Cover

Well.

I’m impressed that they did worse.

it’s like Skulduggery cosplaying billy-ray sanguine, I don’t even KNOW.

10.

image

American Paperback

Exec #1: “well, the skeleton cover really didn’t work here… We think it might have been too scary. What should we do for this reboot?”

Exec #2: “what’s the title?”

exec #1: “Playing with Fire.”

Exec #2: “Hand. Fire. DONE, BOOM”

at least they TRIED with the first one by making a scepter. ths is just… utter laziness.

“Vampires are just part of the problem!” what was wrong with don’t try this at home?? IT MAKES EVEN MORE SENSE HERE. it’s the only one of these covers with a tagline, too. lord.

You´re right, him possessing Val would make kinda sense... I mean she´s the Child of the Faceless Ones and he claims to be a direct descendant from them Faceless Ones, so maybe they have some kind of connection? But with that logic he could also take Alice...

On the other hand, I always thought that Auger would die and Omen would take his place as the chosen one. It seemed like a typical Dirty Laundry plot twist. That could still be possible if Auger was possessed by the Unnamed. Then Omen could finally have a real hero arc and also it would create so much drama if he had to fight his brother.

For the ask: (SoW Spoilers) What is your theory about the Unnamed? Do you think he´s really dead? I can´t help but feel like his arc has not finished yet. I mean there was this huge build up with his resurrection and him being like the most powerful sorcerer ever and then he just died. It seemed way too easy, but on the other hand at least his ( well Caisson´s) body has to be dead, since the obsidian blade vanished it. So I´m thinking, maybe before he died he possessed Auger? What do you think?

oh shit dude. i kinda skimmed over that whole part bc a) i was so upset about saracen and b) it kinda felt a bit rushed and confusing towards the end. you definitely raise an excellent point about his buildup, and i don’t think he’s dead either. he just can’t be, right? as for theories, yours is a good one, and maybe he could possess val, which might explain the whole alice vision.

That actually makes sense... but as you already pointed out in the tags, Saracen would still have been able to see Viles armour inside Skug´s ribcage. I think he said using his magic with clothes makes everything squishy or something like that, so he probably just didn´t recognize it for what it was.

Vile & Saracen’s Power

In Seasons of War, it was revealed that Saracen’s magic allows him to see through layers. There’s been a lot of discussion since, wondering why Saracen didn’t realise that Skulduggery was Vile, and whether it’s a continuity error.

If Saracen can see through layers, why couldn’t he see through Vile’s armour? Why doesn’t he know who Vile is? Why didn’t he know straight away?

But there’s a reason given for why Saracen might not know about Vile.

I mean now that Saracen's power was revealed it is basically canon that he knew since he first saw Vile... so either he didn't tell anyone or all the Dead Men (or maybe only Dex?) knew as well and just never mentioned anything.

so it seems like Skul’s Lord Vile secret will probably be made public in phase 2 with more and more people finding out about it

I hope when that happens Nef will be still alive so he can crack all of the Jekyll and Hyde jokes every time Skul enters the room
