“This is a nice first date,” Luz said, as she readjusted her grip on Amity’s hand. Her own was a little clammy from nerves- but Amity’s was too, so it was probably fine.
“Second date,” Amity corrected her absentmindedly, tugging her along to the window of the bookshop.
“Second date? Are you counting the day we got together?”
“No, why would you-“ Amity’s eyes went wide and she blushed hard, slamming her mouth shut. “No, you’re right, first, first date. Silly me, getting mixed up!”
Amity sped up, dragging Luz into the bookshop with her face still red. Luz tugged her back, reminding her they were still attached.
“Are you hiding something from me, Miss Blight,” Luz asked, leaning towards her girlfriend inquisitively.
They realized the position they were in simultaneously, faces close together, inches away- they jumped back, faces flushed.
Luz fanned herself while Amity held herself up against a bookshelf. They glanced at each other and laughed, relieved the other was feeling just as flustered.
“Do you think we’ll ever get used to this,” Amity asked, tentatively reaching her hand back out.
“I hope so,” Luz said. She took Amity’s hand in hers, brushing over her knuckles just to see the light flush cover Amity’s face again. “Maybe after a few more dates?”
“Maybe.”
“Especially since this is just our…second? Date?” She watched Amity out of the corner of her eye, her blush growing.
“I told you, it’s silly…” Her hand came up to grip her necklace, and she turned away.
“Hey.” Luz gently pried her hand away from the gem, taking both of Amity’s hands into her own. “If it was something important to you, then it wasn’t silly. I want to know, if you want to tell me.”
“I was…I might’ve been,” Amity rolled her eyes at her own stuttering, holding Luz’s hands tightly, “counting Grom,” she finished quietly.
“Grom? But you were-“ Luz thought back to that night. “-you were afraid of getting rejected…by me?!”
“Not so loud!” Amity dragged her to a quieter section of the bookshop, away from curious shoppers.
“But the note- your crush?”
“Was…you. And, for you.” She took both of Luz’s hands back in her own, drawing comfort from her touch. “You were,” she sighed with a small smile as she stared at their hands, “sweet. Not what I expected when we first met, especially not after I saw you trying to read my diary with the twins-“
“I maintain that was all their idea! I was trying to hide it from them once I figured out what they were doing!”
“I know, they told me when they apologized for nearly getting us killed. But, you really are smart, and brave, and fearless-“
“I think the fact that I almost have a heart attack every time I try to hold your hand says otherwise,” Luz laughed nervously.
“But you still do it! And that’s part of why I l-like you so much. You’re so determined when you want to do something! And then,” she covered her face, red all the way to the tips of her ears, “when you called yourself my fearless champion…”
“And then threw myself face first in the mud because of the giant spider,” Luz groaned.
“But you were still willing to take my place to fight Grom,” Amity said. “No one else would’ve done that, Luz.”
“I mean,” Luz scratched her head, “you weren’t the only one feeling…feelings back then.”
“Really?”
“I mean, I didn’t know what they were, but I knew I wanted to impress you. And…make you smile. And it’s not every day that I decide to be someone’s fearless champion.” She frowned. “Not that I was very good at it. You ended up having to save me and take over.”
“But we beat Grom. Together. Just like when I accidentally burned Willow’s memories. Remember what you told me?” Luz shook her head. “You said ‘we can fix this together.’ It’s hard for me to ask for help sometimes. As I’m sure you can guess, my mom isn’t a fan of Blights showing ‘weakness’. But it’s…easier. With you.” She smiled. “I know that you won’t laugh at me, or hold it over my head later.”
“Of course not! I just want to help!”
“I know. And that’s one of my favorite things about you. Although, if you could help while getting into a few less life threatening situations…”
“Malphas told you about the paper dragon, huh?” She grimaced.
“Yeah…On the plus side, he did say that you have a future in dragon wrangling if you wanted.”
Luz shuddered. “No thanks. Once was enough for me.”
“Grom though…” She took Amity’s hand again, this time without a blush, and walked them back into the main part of the bookstore. “I wish I’d known. We could’ve- I mean maybe I could’ve- or you, either way really- I mean!” She tugged her hood over her head, pulling the drawstrings tight, and turned a dark red. “Hah! Ignore me!!”
Amity bit her lip and gave a shy grin, catching Luz’s thought. “I don’t think I ever really thanked you for taking my place as Grom Queen, did I?”
Luz loosened her hood so she could talk clearly. “No, I think you-“
Amity darted forward, pecking Luz on the cheek. “Thank you.”
Luz’s jaw dropped, and then she did, falling to her knees again as Amity quickly walked away, blushing hard.
“A-Amity!” She stood, running after her girlfriend. “You can’t run away every time you kiss me!”
“Watch me!”
“Amity!!”
