Just a reminder that Valentine's Day isn't a secular holiday and that there should never be any expectation to celebrate any non-secular holidays.
Keep non-secular holidays out of popular culture expectations.
(Regardless of how you think about it or celebrate it, Valentine's Day did not have secular origins, making it an inherently non-secular holiday.)
whether you're celebrating the 4th of July or not, remember that there are multiple Americans who were taken hostage on October 7th and they have still not been brought home almost 9 months later. some are presumed to be alive and others are confirmed dead, and on a day that is supposed to be about freedom for Americans, they are not with their loved ones. do not forget those of us who are not free.
If anyone is looking for a Christmas Hannukah present, I highly recommend The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming, by Daniel Handler Lemony Snicket.
It's the story of a little latke who has to deal with obnoxious Christmas decorations who think Hannukah is Jewish Christmas. And also being fried in hot oil.
REBLOGGING!!!
Thursday, February 15.
Well, do you?
You may have been wondering why the face of one Mr. Squidward was looking back at you from your calendar this morning. Well, on this day, many years ago, Squidward bit—against his better instincts.
You know what you've got to do. Get on up, get dressed, head down to your local deep sea restaurant, and find the curmudgeonous six-limbed squid working there as a cashier. The rest is up to you.
If you read nothing else on my blog at least read this:
Jewish survival is beautiful, and amazing.
I know times right now are absolutely awful, and it can feel like the world is against us. We're seeing the Nazi marches, the targeting of Jewish businesses, harassment of religious Jews, and so much more at a much more severe rate than many of us have seen within our lifetimes.
But we've survived this before.
The most dangerous thing right now is to lose hope. To lose hope of a better future, to lose hope of any future. We have survived the pogroms, the Holocaust, the Inquisition, the many Middle Eastern anti-Jewish genocides and attacks, various expulsions and so much more.
I've reblogged someone else's post saying this before but I'm going to say it here again: every single Jew alive right now is a miracle.
So here's one thing I want to ask of you: Live.
Do it out of love for your fellow Jews, do it out of spite towards our enemies, do it so that there will be more miracles in the future.
Living is the greatest form of Jewish rebellion.
Living a proud Jewish life is even more so, but at the very least, please live.
Please please please don't give up on life right now. If you feel alone, reach out. Reach out to your fellow Jews, find non-Jewish allies to stand by your side, seek out supportive communities.
As a Jew, you are never truly alone. You have people who will love you like family if you just reach out, because we are one. One family, one nation, one soul. And we all care for each other.

Started a game of Pokemon Platinum yesterday and I remembered how much more I enjoy Pokemon than I initially thought I did.
Ooh! This is giving me an art idea!
Attention artists drawing Chanukah art! (Because I've seen wayyy too many incorrect depictions)
-The Shamash (the ninth candle, usually in the center or off to the side of a Chanukiyah (Chanukah menorah)) is used to light the other candles. It is lit first, and is the helper candle. It's not part of the lineup.
-The flames are lit from left to right, starting with the candle/oil well representing the current night. For example:
If this is the first night: _ _ _ _ _ _ _🕯️
And this is the third night: _ _ _ _ _ 🕯️🕯️🕯️
You would start by lighting the candle to the leftmost on the third night, and then move gradually to the right.
-The flames are supposed to be kept burning until they burn out. You don't reuse candles from the night before under ideal conditions (ideal being able to afford candles, etc).
-You can't use the candles on the Chanukiyah lineup to light other candles. That's what the Shamash candle is for. You're not supposed to use the Chanukiyah flames for anything.
