Okay, can we please talk about how Song for the asking is literally written almost like a desperate love confession? It’s killing me like “Take it, don't turn away I've been waiting all my life” oh go to jail Paul Simon.
(Also, a bonus - this is a clip from the harmony game documentary where Paul and Art talk about this song. We’ve probably all seen it a million times but it never gets old 🤕)
Ok just say that ig

He looks so lonely this was probably when Art was in Mexico. Every time I listen to song for the asking I imagine these photos
Paul Simon in the recording studio for Bridge Over Troubled Water, 1969
simon and garfunkel invented the situationship
btw imagine being at paul simon's 70th birthday party and his old buddy is gonna read a poem and u think oh probably gonna be something funny. something light-hearted. maybe a bit in there about growing up together or something. and then art garfunkel comes out and says "he was born three weeks before me, my dear. but he was a premature baby. were we both conceived at the same instant?"
“You could call it love. Paul Simon was my only buddy, I was his only buddy. We could be outcasts, but we had each other.”
— Art Garfunkel
An early demo of Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Only Living Boy in New York” (excerpted from the 1975 BBC series on the duo). I wish this line had made it into the final version!
do you ever listen to this song and just go so profoundly insane its as if you will never ever recover? do you ever think about Paul simon "half of the time we're gone but we don't know where, we don't know where, the only living boy in new york" and art garfunkel replying with "here i am" in the most haunting harmonies that could fill a canyon? i mean do you ever think about that.
They/themFor all things that make me smile :-)
