Other uses:
Star anise has been used in Asian and Eurasian cooking for many, many years. This age-old spice is not only known as a culinary expert, but is also famous for its medicinal properties like being used to improve heart health, steady blood sugar, ward off bacteria and fungi, aid in sleeping and help fight the flu.
In foods and beverages, star anise is considered a culinary spice; both the seed and oil are used as flavoring.

Warding is a form of magick intended to protect a person, place, or thing from negative/parasitic energies/entities. Wards are like energy and will fade over time.
There are 3 types of wards-
Trapping- Trapping negative entities.
Circumventing- Diverting negative entities.
Filtering- Allowing positive energy in while keeping negative energy out.
It is important to note to cleanse before warding, otherwise you will be keeping anything negative within your space.
Some examples of wards-
Sigils
Energy
Spirits
Poppets
Satchels
Enchanted items
Crystals/Crystal grids
Botanicals
Types of water
Types of dirt
Types of salt
You will need:
Four small bowls
Frankincense oil or tears
Myrrh oil or tears
Vervain oil or plant matter
Yarrow oil or plant matter
Salt
In four small bowls, in four corners of the house, place one tablespoon frankincense, one tablespoon myrrh, one tablespoon vervain, one tablespoon yarrow, and surround each bowl with a circle of salt.
Sitting in the center of the house, you then surround yourself with a circle of salt, and seek your own power. This is your home. It is your territory. You are the power of this place and it is your temple. It has meaning because it is yours. It is a home because you make it one.
Seek feelings of security, stability, and confidence within yourself, remembering your home as a place of safety and rest.
When those feelings are strong within you, cast a claiming and warding.
The claiming and warding I prefer is quite simple, “This house is mine. I have claimed it with frankincense, that there may be riches within it. I have claimed it with myrrh, that evil cannot enter here. I have claimed it with vervain, that it may be a sacred space, a temple for my earthly flesh. I claim it with yarrow, that only good health may enter here. This house is mine.”
But you use whatever warding affirmation you prefer.
Gather each ingredient from the four bowls and place them in a container of your choice. Place this somewhere in the home – the mantle of the fireplace, inside your chest of drawers, on your altar, etc. Gather the salt from the circles and scatter it around the outside of the house, reinforcing your warding, for example, saying: “This house is mine. This house is mine. This house is mine.”
Cautionary Note: If you are using pure essential oils rather than infused oils, please be careful touching them, as they can cause chemical burns.

This post will specifically discuss warding and protections, not cleansing, banishing, or grounding, though those are related and important
Sense memory- if you have a strong ability to imagine sensations, imagine things that make you feel safe. This can be the click of locking a door, the feeling of a shield on your arm, the weight of a thick jacket to protect your shoulders
Physical actions- actually lock your door, and put the intention of keeping out what you want kept out. Put on that jacket, imagine it as a barrier against harm.
Objects/correspondences. Put pieces of lodestone at the four corners of your space, carry a smoky quartz in your pocket, put a plant root on your altar/desk, a big round rock in your windowsill.
Black candle- light a black candle, set it in your space. Do not burn your house down.
Make a tea with protection herbs, and drink it before/during your spell or ritual. My suggestions would be anything with licorice, cloves, dandelion root, ginger, or cinnamon, but you can use whatever correspondences that work for you
Play music. Something soft that feels safe, or something fast that puts you in a fighting mood. Music can also be used for cleansing/banishing, if you’re mixing them all together into one ritual
Long term wards can be put in jars or sachets and placed somewhere innocuous. A capsule of black salt next to your door, a jar with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a piece of obsidian in your window.
Imbue your stuff with protective energy. This works well with clothing, crystals, herbs, and handheld objects like pens or water bottles. Make it an anchor for your protective energy.
Sigils. Write a protective sigil on the inside of your phone case, or a paper in your pocket of bag. Embroider a sigil on fabric.
Intention words or phrases work the same, though may take longer to embroider. Write a protective phrase on a paper, keep it in your pocket. Some good ones are- ‘I am safe’ or ‘I am protected from harm’ or ‘evil things stay away from me.’
Actual safety precautions- research the laws in your area. What’s the biggest knife you can carry, and what designs are legal. Walking sticks are always legal and can be used in self defense. Lots of online shops and sporting goods stores sell tactical pens, which are heavy and often have a pointed end.
In the same vein- good sturdy shoes, a thick jacket, a strong belt, a heavy bag.
🍎 small batch apple butter recipe 🍎
2 lbs of your apple of choice (about 5/6 medium apples; i used gala and they were perfectly soft for this and not too sweet!) 1/3 c. of water juice of one medium lemon (abt 2 tbsp) ½ c. granulated white sugar
2 tbsp (un)salted butter (i dont think salted vs unsalted matters much but i like my sweets a lil less sweet, so i used salted!) 3 cinnamon sticks (or ¼ tsp of ground cinnamon) 1/8 tsp of cardamom (optional; can sub for ground clove at ¼ tsp) 1/3 c. packed brown sugar ¼ c. maple syrup (optional!) a pinch of salt (1/8-¼ tsp) to taste

once a year I renew the protection warding to my front door using vinegar that's had citrus soaking in it for a year at least, if anything it makes it so people don't linger at my door and also works great for cleaning dirt and grime 😅
🖤 Spell Jar for Protection 🖤
Ingredients/Equipment
Chilli Flakes (or Chilli Powder, whatever's around) - to ward off unwanted guests
Rosemary - purification, protection
Salt - absorbing negative energy, protection, purification
Black Pepper (both peppercorns and grounded) - banish negativity, protection from evil
3 Bay Leaves - protection from harmful energies
Protection Sigil or a Banish Negativity Sigil
Preferably Black Candle to seal the jar (white may be used as a substitute as I have done)
A Jar
A Funnel (trust me, if you don't use one shit will go everywhere, make and use a homemade paper funnel if you need to)
Spell Method
Cast a protective circle or do your own pre-spell rituals, whatever works for you and light the candle
Cleanse your equipment and ingredients (I use specific ritual incense but again whatever works for you, sage burning, etc)
Put the ingredients in the jar one at a time, repeating a chosen affirmation for protection with each one. The order doesn't nessicarily matter as the intent is what's most important. However, I recommend leaving the bay leaves until last
Use a marker to draw a sigil that represents protection or banishing negativity on at least one of the bay leaves. If you need to break up the leaves to fit them in the jar that's okay; again, the intention is what's most important
Close the jar and seal it with the wax from the candle
