Flameless Hearths & Devotions

image

Ideas for Hestia devotees/worshippers who are unable to use a fireplace or flames in their worship. Welcome for all who find this helpful!

Using flames safely and/or discreetly:

(For the occasional need)

Use a tea light or lighter outside; on a fire-safe surface such as concrete or gravel.

Burn objects over your sink or a bowl of water.

Outdoor fire pits or grills.ย

Creating your hearth:

Your hearth should feel like a central, focused place that represents your home. Someplace where you feel calm and safe. Traditionally, this was often in the kitchen; but it can be anywhere in your home. It can also be in multiple places, or small and contained.ย

My shelf altar. I keep it clean and tidy. It contains items that remind me of home, and offerings to Hestia. It represents hearth and home, and is a space I can visit when I wish to feel connected to her.ย

My dedication wall. I used to have a wall with a dried marigold garland, soothing poetry, devotional poetry, artwork and prayers on it. This is an excellent way to have a discreet (if you so choose) dedicated space that doesnโ€™t take up much surface area.ย

My stovetop. Each time I put the kettle on for tea, I feel connected to Hestia. I offer the first sip to her. I simmer pots of water with herbs, spices or other scented things (such as orange peels) to spread a beautiful aroma around my home.ย

Donโ€™t have a stove? An electric kettle and microwave will do!

My oven. Each time I bake (both the preparation and the baking itself) I feel connected to her and give a portion as an offering.

My woodstove or outdoor firepit. It is worth noting that because I have these things (and use my woodstove as a primary heating source) I do often use these as my hearth and burn offerings here.ย

Flame and candle alternatives:

What feels right to you? What matches the energy/warmth of fire and flame?

Electric candles, especially ones that flicker and have warmer colors.

Electric tealights in candle holders.ย

Solar charged lanterns

Fairy lights in a jar

Himalayan salt lamp

Wax or oil warmers (with heat bulbs).

Electric fireplace

Flame ambiance videos

Scents:

For me, certain smells embody home. And this is wonderful, because we can control themโ€“even without candles or incense!

Essential oil or reed diffusersย

Wax or oil warmers

Scented electric candles

Potpourriย

Scented sachets

Room/pillow sprays

Pot of water on the stove with scented things

โ€œSmudgeโ€ sticks can be made of many different herbs. I recommend using white sage sticks. Light it and wave it gently in the air, encouraging the smoke to spill over the crystals. This action is smoke cleansing, not to be confused with smudging.

๐ŸŒฟ๐ˆ๐๐‚๐„๐๐’๐„. Like with smoke cleansing, the smoke created from lighting the incense is wonderful depending on the scent and infusion of the sticks to spill over crystals. For incense I can recommend frankincense and myrrh, or any cleansing mixes.

๐ŸŒฟ๐’๐€๐‹๐“ ๐–๐€๐“๐„๐‘. You can use salt water from the ocean or simply put salt in a bowl of water. Hold your crystals so that they are immersed in the water. Itโ€™ll cleanse the energy from the stones. Be sure to clean your crystals using clean water afterwards. Some crystals can not be placed in water because they are too soft, or brittle. Water can cause some stones to fracture and break, or even dissolve! Be sure to look up your crystal and what cleansing is best for it.

๐ŸŒฟ๐Œ๐„๐ƒ๐ˆ๐“๐€๐“๐ˆ๐Ž๐. Sit comfortably in a quiet room or a place of your choosing. Hold your crystals in your hand and close your eyes, allowing the silence and serenity to envelope you. Visualise your crystals in front of you. Picture a wave washing all the negative energy trapped inside the crystals away. Do this until you intuitively feel that they have been cleansed.

๐ŸŒฟ๐Œ๐Ž๐Ž๐๐‹๐ˆ๐†๐‡๐“. This is the easiest method of cleansing, and safe for all crystals. Also, The full moon can act as a reminder for you that your crystals need cleansing. Simply wait for the full moon and place your crystals outside so that they are surrounded by the moonโ€™s gentle energy. If you donโ€™t have an outdoor area that is safe for your crystals to be placed, a windowsill will work too. It does not matter if your window does not face the moon. The moonโ€™s energy will still be present. Then bring them back inside in the morning. ย

๐ŸŒผ Little chamomile milk tea potion ๐ŸŒผ

๐ŸŒผ Little Chamomile Milk Tea Potion ๐ŸŒผ

I made this to relax before bed and bring in sweet dreams and happiness the next day. This is good after a stressful day or when you want a good nights sleep.

What you need

-3 chamomile tea bags - relaxing, peace, happiness

-water (I used normal water but you can use rain or moon water for more of an effect)

-milk

-honey - to sweeten your dreams

-cinnamon - to bring happiness into the next day and to remind you that the sun always rises the next day

Steps

I. Fill a mug ยผ full of water and pour it into a pot. Put the chamomile tea bags in and simmer the pot to let them seep

II. Let the tea get really strong. Maybe simmer it for about 10 minutes

III. Fill the mug about ยพ full of milk and pour it into the tea. Make sure to leave the tea bags in.

IV. Add in honey and stir until devolved. Once your milk tea is warm, pour it into the mug and sprinkle cinnamon one top

V. Hold the mug in your hand and change it with calm and happy energy

I hope you enjoy this delicious milk tea! Have a wonderful day ๐ŸŒผ

I wish to be with the trees.

Roaming the forest for so long that I eventually start to become it.

I will grow antlers and claws.ย

Mushrooms with sprout from my skin, ivy will wrap itself around my limbs.ย

My eyes will glow in the dark, I will be able to speak to the animals and plants.

I will live in a cave, and host picnics for all of the citters.

I will thank the trees for letting me be with them.ย

I do not deserve them.ย

Simmer Pots ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿฏ

I merged a few recipes of these together. Swapped and changed some ingredients.

Orange

Lemon

Apple

Rosemary

Lavender

Star anise

Rose buds

Rose petals

Hibiscus

Bay leaves

Cinnamon

Moon water

Florida water

Kananga water

Used more of some ingredients than others, depending on the smell you want..

So I used more of the flowery smells.

Not too much of the florida and kananga as they are strong anyway.

I have bottled the water, once it cooled, and hoping it will work with my diffuser- it should do.

The Use of Hornets and Wasps in Witchcraft

The Use Of Hornets And Wasps In Witchcraft

Iโ€™m sorry for my absence my lovelies! Itโ€™s been a difficult few weeks for me recently, because Iโ€™ve been trying to cope with exams, then the end of classes, and then constant exposure to an abusive family member, all whilst struggling with significant depression. However, Iโ€™m pushing on through, and one of the things thatโ€™s getting me through is thinking about new things to post on!

A note about the ethics of animal part usage

Insects parts are a very traditional element of witchcraft, and they are much more ethical than any other animal parts because (like bivalve and gastropod molluscs), arthropods do not have a brain capable of supporting consciousness. Killing hornets for your craft, then, is an ethically safe thing to do. However, killing animals that are capable of consciousness exclusively for the reasons of Craft is disputed by many witches from different traditions and is usually considered to be unacceptable. Please donโ€™t take this post to be in support of killing conscious animals for usage in Craft activities โ€“ I am personally strongly against pointless slaughter, including sport-hunting and sport-fishing.

Witchy Uses for Hornets and Wasps

Curses that involve pain and fear โ€“ Any curse that has pain or fear as a major component of its magick (either because itโ€™s what you want to cause, or itโ€™s what you want to get justice for) would be greatly enhanced by the addition of dried and crushed wasps or hornets.

Curses that involve falling afoul of spies, infiltrators, or deceivers โ€“ Wasps and hornets are most infamous in apiculture (beekeeping) for their tendency to enter into a beehive and kill every single bee inside, completely destroying a colony in a matter of hours or days. They do this by camouflaging their scent, and then sneaking into the hive round a back entrance. Once inside, they will kill everything in their path to achieve their goals. Any spell that involves either retribution for those that have done this, or hope to invite these kinds of people into someoneโ€™s life, would do well to have crushed or whole hornet or wasp nest in them.

Curses that involve projects or structures going wrong โ€“ Wasps and hornets are also well known for causing colony collapses. Using dried and crushed hornets and wasps in your spellwork can be very effective in causing organisations, projects, or communities to break apart, or again to get retribution against those who performed these actions. Most effective against organisations with power thatโ€™s highly consolidated in one person, like in a beehive.

Any spell focused around matriarchal or feminine-specific social structures โ€“ Using wasp or hornet nest in your spell can (if you properly cleanse it with salt and smoke to remove negative inclinations) help boost spells that are focused around matriarchal social orders. This is also true with ant nest and honeycomb pieces, though honeycomb is the best of the options.

Any spell focused on people who leech things off of others โ€“ Hornets and wasps donโ€™t work for their food like bees or ants do, but prefer to target those who work hard and steal or leech off of them. Any spell thatโ€™s aimed at human leeches, mooches and other human parasites can be increase with the addition of crushed wasps and hornets. Parasitic creatures like actual leeches, mosquitoes and ticks are better, but less readily obtainable in some areas.

Spells that involve wasps! โ€“ Youโ€™d be surprised how non-obvious this is to some people, but yes, if you want your spell to literally involve wasps or hornets, it would be a good idea to include one or two in your spell!

I hope this is of use to all you lovely witches out there!
