Trojan thinking goes, in fact, in the opposite direction to that of Kevin and Neil. Jeremy thinks it's "just a game" while for Kevin and Neil it's not. It would be super interesting if Jean achieved this mentality.

This might just be my brain being weird, but I find it so funny that Jean would say this. Because, in another life, Nathaniel would have been number three, and Jean would have been four. But this is the only version of the story that Jean doesn't die, the one that he is three instead of four.

fwiw I do think that when Jean calls Neil his "broken promise" it's said with a not small amount of anger that Neil keeps proving himself up for the task.

If Nathaniel had shown up and he was just another brute, another sadist, another face uncaring of Jean's plight or too weak to fight for him, that would have been fine. He could have been dismissed as a dream that never could have been, and Jean would have had nobody to blame except his own optimism betraying him yet again.

But Neil rolls in like a thundercloud that never stops striking. He speaks French without without fear for who's listening. He's as capable of patching up Jean after a bad day as the reverse. He is willing, no, delights in standing up to Riko's cruelty, and in fact will do more for Jean's sake than Jean would ever imagine, much less dare ask.

But if Neil is real. If friendship and kindness is not yet another lie Jean told himself at night...then Jean's suffering is not some immutable law of the world. And if that's true, if his anger is real and right...he's not sure he has the strength to hold it all in.

Something quite trivial, something the amateur would think absurd, will play an extremely important role in solving this mystery. Silly things that deviate from the ordinary are indispensable, especially when it comes to crime. The secret of the crime-solver is not to make light of such things.

every time I turn a page in tsc nora kicks me in the stomach and shoots me in the face. when will enough be enough

obsessed with how neil and jeremy are both unreliable narrators but in vastly different ways. neil gives the reader all of the information he considers important and quite literally nothing else. so you get play-by-play recounts of exy games, gruesomely detailed descriptions of his trauma, live-commentated accounts of his conversations with andrew but you have no idea what his real name is. or what he looks like. or what any of the characters look like, for that matter. most of his narration is literally just internal monologue and like 20% of it is actually what's going on in real time. jeremy, on the other hand, only gives the reader unimportant information. hell, not even unimportant just blatantly obvious. it's like you're just standing right next to him as the events are happening cos you have no fucking clue what's going on in his head. he'll comment on jean's good looks, team relationship dynamics, give exact replays of conversations, tell it like it is except you have no idea like the context of any of it. like he recounts his conversation with his sister word-for-word and you still have no idea what any of it means cos he just says that she tells him he ruined her family and then doesn't bother to elaborate at all. iconic behaviour.

You could attribute this to Mori and Dazai both being manipulators who are trying to utilize people for their benefit, but I think it's more than that. They know what it feels like to have that light in their lives. To partner up with "good" person. So much so that they want to push it onto the next generation, because they want the one they see themselves in to have that light in their life. Dazai wants Akutagawa to have Atsushi to temper that darkness. Mori wanted Chuuya for Dazai to give him a reason to live. Maybe one day Akutagawa will be pushing a different version of skk in some other lost soul he sees himself in, trying to save him in the only way he knows how. And the cycle will continue.

I need Jean to know his misplaced promise would do anything for him if he’d just gotten the chance to know him 

jean moreau and neil josten parallels might be death of me. how they were meant to have each other's numbers. misplaced forever partners. neil was jean's unfulfilled promise. how jean was always there to pick neil back up again during his stay in evermore. how jean and neil were the same in the eyes of the moriyamas. how one was scarred and burned with fire and the other was abused and conditioned with water. how fierce and gentle neil is with jean despite knowing him for a couple of weeks max. how they understand each other on a level that maybe no one else can. jeanneil you are SO real to me.
