Dragon Ball’s Chi Chi is a cool character

I just finished watching the original Dragon Ball series and it was a ton of fun. I’d never really watched the original series before because when it was on Toonami, I thought it was just like the baby version of Dragon Ball Z. It’s definitely not that and fills in a lot of cool plot holes and interesting details I never knew about the universe or the characters.

One character in particular was super interesting and that was Chi Chi. I had always thought of Chi Chi as a bit of a stereotyped mom character until I watched Dragon Ball. She was always worried about her son, did a bunch of cooking and cleaning, nagged Goku to stay with her and Gohan more, and was generally a Mom.

After viewing Dragon Ball, I get a different perspective on her character. From the first introduction of Chi Chi, we get a girl who had made her decisions for the future on her own. Her father, The Ox King is a martial artist who keeps his daughter safe from harm and cares about her growing up strong. He teaches her fighting techniques and doesn’t pressure her into obeying some feminine lifestyle of cooking and cleaning. He’s oblivious and doesn’t realize she’s talking about marriage to Goku when she first brings it up. He’d never even thought of his daughter as a bride until she mentioned it.

She is actually a competent enough fighter by the time she’s 19 to make it to the quarter finals of the World Martial Arts tournament which is pretty awesome considering she’s a regular human and not some crazy ass alien. But she actually chooses to live the life of a housewife. She’s been basically raised her whole life to be capable of protecting her self, but she decides that what will actually make her happy is just to be Goku’s wife.

I kind of just think that’s nice that she gets to do what makes her happy. She’s not some cliched character in the original series. She unfortunately becomes a cliche in Dragon Ball Z when she is lowered to basically a sitcom mom. I don’t feel like there’s an excuse for this other than that they love slapstick in Dragon Ball and Chi Chi just wasn’t a strong enough fighter to be a part of the big fighting action team. It’s a sad place to see such an interesting character go. Especially after seeing her work with Goku to find the Bansho fan in the last set of filler episodes of the series.

To anyone who sends us GoChi hate.

Confirmed that ChiChi doesn’t talk about her fighting days often with her boys or shows it.

it’s heavily implied that the reason chi-chi cares so much about intelligence and being “proper” is that she’s constantly considered a stupid hick–people in the manga comment on her low-class, country accent. she wants so badly for gohan to have more opportunities than barely scraping by until the next world tournament

and people forget that chi-chi grew up like that too. no way chi-chi ever had formal schooling. she was raised by her father, who was so scary residents called him the emperor of demons. she didn’t have friends; she was sheltered and naive and daydreamed about getting married because all she had was stories. she couldn’t even live in her own home for most of her youth. chi-chi didn’t have a normal childhood

the driving episode is non-canon filler, but it’s still totally consistent with chi-chi’s desire to at least function in normal society. you can’t take the flying nimbus to a grocery store

“but acting normal doesn’t matter when you can crush mountains!” the only people who say this have never actually had to function in society on their own. we’re social animals, being accepted is important. social status may have no concrete value, but it affects how other treat us and how we perceive them. you can’t pretend it doesn’t exist because power levels. goku may not give a shit, but hey, what a coincidence, goku isn’t the one who all the supermarket cashiers recognize on sight. goku isn’t the one who has to go to the hardware store and parent-teacher conferences alone. goku isn’t the one trying to even give gohan a chance to experience human society

Goku and Chichi’s Relationship

Chichi does nothing but yell and nag. Goku married Chichi without fully knowing what he was getting into. Goku is henpecked. Goku does not have romantic feelings for Chichi. Goku sees Chichi as just another companion, and so on and so forth. These are things I usually hear people say about GoChi. And you know what, I don’t understand.

The reason I fell in love with the GoChi ship was because Dragon Ball ends with Goku knowing nothing about marriage, but when Dragon Ball Z comes along we see that despite his initial ignorance he manages to maintain a happy marriage. He had no idea what love was in DB, but in DBZ we see that he has grown to love Chichi. 

When people bash GoChi, I always think about the part in the Cell Saga where Goku has just recovered from the heart virus. I’m not even talking about just the kiss; it’s everything. That’s the longest the series allows us to see Goku and Chichi together, so it’s the best window we have into their relationship. Plus, Goku has just escaped death at this point, and usually it is during moments like this that people are most honest about their feelings. 

And what feelings do they show us? Let’s take a look at the following screenshots:

Goku smiles as Chichi hugs him. He apologizes for worrying her, then proceeds to swing her around. My favorite part is when Chichi tells him to cut it out but ends up enjoying it anyway. They laugh together like teenagers in love, then he accidentally throws her too high into the sky, but when he catches her, they just laugh it off. 

I think this is basically a summary of how Goku and Chichi are as a couple. Goku does something silly or stupid, Chichi tries to tell him off, but then she gives in and ends up loving him all the more for his antics. 

I think this is how they show affection to each other too. They’re not passionate or intense. They don’t go on candlelit dinners or profess undying love for each other through poetry. Instead, they play in the snow, run around in the rain, and laugh together doing simple sweet things in their simple sweet home in the mountain. 

I think this scene also shows how Goku loves and treats Chichi differently from Krillin or Bulma or even his own son Gohan. Have you ever seen Goku act this way around any other character? Case in point, when Goku ITs to the aircraft carrying his friends shortly after this scene, Krillin cries with joy and throws himself into Goku’s arms so fervently that they smash through the side of the aircraft. His reaction was just as powerful as Chichi’s, and yet Goku did not feel the urge to swing him around or do with him the same things he did with Chichi. 

Next, is Goku actually a henpecked husband? Is Chichi actually an irrational nagger who cannot accept the kind of person her husband is? Let’s look at these screenshots:

I have this belief that Goku isn’t as henpecked as he seems to be. I believe that he lets Chichi yell and nag because he’s a patient and generally peaceful person. But here, when people’s lives are at stake and time is of the essence, Goku looks disapproving of Chichi’s stubbornness and looks about ready to argue. 

I love this because it shows that Goku loves his strong-willed wife and so lets her assume dominance in the relationship for the most part, but he also won’t just quietly submit to her when she’s being irrational. 

But here’s what makes this even more wonderful:

Chichi reveals that she’s not irrational at all. And Chichi knows her husband well enough to know that she won’t win an argument about this anyway. Which makes me think that she and Goku do argue from time to time; they just don’t do it so publicly like Bulma and Vegeta.

Chichi also shows here that she, despite everything she usually yells about, believes in her husband and in the potential of their son. Goku appreciates this, and thanks her. He understands just how much courage it takes her to accept the fate of her family. Master Roshi realizes this too and thinks to himself that Chichi has “nerves of steel”, as befitting the wife of the strongest man on Earth.

Then they just gaze at each other lovingly for a while:

And when it’s time to go, they share a kiss. They kiss for like seven seconds in front of Master Roshi.

If you think about it, contrary to popular portrayal in fanfiction, Goku and Chichi are usually not embarrassed to show their love in front of others.

We see more examples in the Buu saga, when in front of their friends, Goku tells Chichi that he missed her, when Chichi throws herself into his arms as he is about to go back to the afterlife and he hugs her and holds her hand, and when Chichi cries against his chest when they are finally reunited at Kami’s Lookout and he tells her he loves her.

All this done in public, and neither of them act like it’s embarrassing. They treat it as if it were something natural.

Anyway, going back to this scene, the kiss they share here isn’t just a ‘routine’ kiss but something they both genuinely feel like sharing at that moment. How do I know? 

Look at Goku’s face right after they kiss. His gaze lingers on her longer and he has this satisfied smile on his face.

And this next part is what kills me. Goku goes all serious as he is about to IT away, but just before he disappears, he takes one last look at Chichi. And I’m like, WHOA GUYS, TOO MUCH LOVE, GIVE IT A REST.

But seriously, how can anyone say that he doesn’t love her the way a husband loves a wife?

Shipping nonsense should not even be an issue in the Dragon Ball fandom and I’m appalled that people are taking it to such an obscene level where there’s now strife between ships. There shouldn’t be a ship war happening between VegeBul and GoChi (Also why the fuck is even KakaVege getting into the mix?)

First off, shipping shouldn’t have been the final straw to break the camel’s back on your abandonment of watching Super. You all should’ve stopped watching DBS months ago after Toei completely disregarded the timeline, made several established characters go all ooc, and scorched our corneas with its bad animation.

Secondly, if for some odd reason you’re still continuing on with Super (because you’re a sadist) you should do so through parodic lenses and not take anything in it to heart. All Super is is a cash grab. Nothing about it matters! The only reason Super is giving us all these cute VegeBul and KakaVege moments while unjustly throwing GoChi under the bus is because it’s all for the lawls. It’s half-assed fan service that’s supposed to make us chuckle. None of it truly pertains to the development of the story.

Do I honestly think Goku and Chi-Chi have never really kissed? No. Come on. They have two sons.

The only two explanations as to why Goku and Chi-Chi may have never kissed are either because: a. Goku fucks like a Dothraki - all animalistic and doggy style or b. Chi-Chi simply turkey bastered herself to get pregnant.

But, either of those scenarios don’t seem likely, so I’m fairly certain they have kissed while making love at some point in their relationship. Maybe Goku was teasing or was confused? He often does/is both.

I’m honestly tired of seeing the unnecessary hate some of the Vegbul fans from the western side throws at the Gochi ship. I was also asked on my thoughts about this situation and so I figured I’d make a post about it.

P.s. Excuse my english, not my mother tongue.

NOTE: all the points are taken from the manga,original Japanese sub and Shonen Jump magazines, plus some info from Jump heavy site, which got deleted around 2008-09 due to Japan’s strict content/piracy laws. I don’t recognise the older Funimation dub work and TFS (the makers already stated its parody but surprisingly, there are idiots who swore it as canon!) as canon. Other language dub like Brazilian, etc. and Funimation’s DBZ Kai dub work are much closely related to the Japanese sub and manga.

The bullshit this OTP gets from some of those immature Vegbul fans is fucking ridiculous! These asshats try to belittle the other OTP just to show how great theirs is by throwing nonsensical and utter shit.

And I’m seriously annoyed with these haters creeping on my blog and posting their rants on my posts.

For eg. like this one…

Saw this on Chichi and Gochi tag, and I was like WTF?! Do we even watched the same show or is the English/Funimation dub and whatever fansub they watched was that terrible or whoever makes/believes this kind of shit are plain dumb!?

First of all, this is pure bullshit and really, whoever made this are either they’re delusional or cat piss got in their eyes and got blind.

She prevents her husband from training??

Seriously, she had always, from the beginning allowed her husband to train as long as he works too sometimes (Both of them are farmers and its official. Established long before DBS and 2008 special). The only thing she tried preventing was not letting her 4 yr old only child to enter the martial arts world. And after seeing firsthand the dangers and damage her fiancé took from Piccolo jr in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai and King Piccolo and other villains while saving the world, she really got scared for her husband’s life.

But still, she doesn’t stop him from his earth saving duties whenever his friends and gods ask him to do it.

Though she still keeps worrying… about her husband and children, no matter how insanely strong they are because they’re her precious family and she loves them!

Now watch this exchange again and THIS part.

Just before this, Chichi is telling about how Goku should be getting back at his farming or just be home taking some much needed rest after fighting with a fierce Destruction cat god and their grandchild and all that, and then she walks over to the counter to grab his lunch.

Goku stammers something about training and you see Chichi’s arms come together (look at the still) and she says THIS LINE. Her voice is soft, but extremely little. She speaks this really softly.

She’s worried about him fighting because she doesn’t wanna see him hurt again!

Also you will notice something else if you stop being an immature hater. As Chichi says this, Goku’s arms go from his sides to what you see here. I don’t think he was scared of her since she was so far away from him, so it’s not a flinch. It’s almost like he was going to go comfort her cause he saw how quickly she was caught in a sad thought.

These two are so in synch despite their little differences it’s crazy.

Throughout the series Chichi worries, from the 23rd tournament to the entire series! And even in the Battle of Gods movie again her mannerisms are again repeated – from her cute,sweet demeanour to her worrywart ways over her family (her precious husband included) and her strict motherly instincts to ferociously guarding her Goku-sa! Even Goku’s worries and feelings are shown for his wife and children, including his grandchild. As recent as DBS episode 43 and more.

May I also add that this scene is also in the highlighted important and romance part of the battle of gods promo along with vegeta getting angry at bulma-beerus slap scene.

And in episode 14 of Dragonball Super. But that scene was really not stressed out as a certain ‘goku x veg and bul x veg’ fan was in charge in the storyboard and got carried away with tsundere Vegeta x Goku moment… -______-; Again in the movie, Chichi runs to Goku… in Dbs, Vegeta runs to Goku.

(Toriyama strongly said he wrote the script, fucking writing the entire thing himself when he didn’t like the previous story. The previous story didn’t even have Goku cuz it was written by Vegeta fanboy! Before you guys shit on Toriyama, atleast remember he didn’t cut out Vegeta like Watanabe did! And was put together as team mates and equal in the 2nd movie. Son Goku is the main part of Dragonball series, you can’t just replace him with anybody else. Its like asking Ichigo be removed and making Renji to lead in Bleach or Naruto to be lead by the tsundere Sasuke…)

If you really study their interactions, tone and body language, their love is evident.

She never makes a fighting gi??

Well,surprise look at these.

She does not only makes her husband’s gi but also other stuff too, like sweaters. But if you haters gonna neglect these episodes as “fillers” than Bulma making an armour episode is also a “filler” episode. And for the record, Chichi may not be able to make an armour because she doesn’t have a factory like Bulma has. Also the kind of battle Goku and the rest of the Z warriors gets in… an armour like that is totally useless.

She often yells at her husband both in public and private??

Oh really~ but Bulma doesn’t!?? Let’s see, Bulma not only yells but also openly insults him too. And does it in front of others too.

Some egs from the series, didn’t include gifs from entire android, cell and buu arc cuz the post is getting too long. Also, in Kami to Kami (Battle of Gods) movie and in DBS too, especially Ep 17, remember saiyan wives club? xD

No need to take just one example and turn a blind eye to the rest of the shit your otp has and to over throw the other couples and go around spreading fake shit about them.

Plus, Toriyama stated he doesn’t like weak females (this is the reason he didn’t like kid Chichi as she was first characterised as a very shy and timid girl and when he brought back her into story, he changed her into a beautiful, head strong tomboy and as an education minded mama.) and so he created women that he felt were not only “beautiful and sexy”, but also “strong”. Including all the main females - Bulma, Chichi, Videl (LOL, somebody in Toei’s DBS storyboards are messing her characterisation big time) and 18.

Also, his preference for strong and beautiful women are projected in our favourite saiyans wife preference as recently as in DBS!

And for Kami’s sake, no need to bash the canon couple just because you ship non canon stuff.

You can go ship your crack ship without going around ranting bullshit on the canon couple. I ship some crack ships too like but I don’t go around spewing hate and fake interviews!

Goku just doesn’t understand love the same way Vegeta does. Vegeta had parents, and got to be raised a lot different then Goku. Goku was never taught how it works so he’s clueless too it but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t try. And the man said “might not” which is not saying anything canon.

Even if he doesn’t have a sense of family that does not mean he doesn’t love his wife or his children. Goku was raised without a lot of things that most children get, so even if that “Doesn’t have a sense of family” statement was said, it would only mean he didn’t get to have a sense of family because he can’t remember having a mom or dad, he didn’t get that love and attention. That’s what they mean by him not having a sense of family. JFC. People sure like to make up their own shit and take things out of context. Saying he doesn’t love the family he could easily LEAVE and ditch if he didn’t love them or cared for them.

Honestly, a lot of online people are terrible. “Doesn’t have a sense of family” if you actually think for five seconds it’s obvious that means he doesn’t have the best idea of how to be a family since he never learned how, he was basically fighting all his childhood. So it’s saying Goku has a hard time knowing what expressing his love means. He knows how to do it and does love his family, and is learning from them what a family is and how it IS different from fighting and food and how it’s supposed to be treated. Goku thinks just saying Hey I like you! Is enough because that’s all he ever learned, but little by little he’s learning the true meaning of family and what it means to have a wife and kids. He learned NOTHING about that sort of stuff in his childhood.

But slowly and surely, he learned and he most definitely loved them.

Takes really painful death just to save his only child twice but gets called shitty names! its kind of sad to see so many here talking crap about him just like that… :(

I mean he isn’t the perfect father of the year, by the way he was brought up… he never had parents in his life (unlike vegeta, bulma), his adoptive grandparent died really early in his life… and he was practically raising himself alone in a forest!

And lets face it, his friends (bulma, krillin, yamcha…)at first part of the manga were all just using him to either use his strength to get something or save their asses.

And if he asked something even about normal things because he’s a curious child… he would be yelled at or called names instead of teaching him nicely!!! (they were all aware of his childhood… kinda sad, upbringing even then they were a**holes to him.)

Master Roshi’s way of education was horrendous (reading from porn stuff only!). The only education that helped him in anyway was from Kami and Mr popo.

Yet, even though he never had a family in his life early onwards but he still makes up and tries to be a good father as best as he can. He coddled his first child so much that Piccolo and even Gohan himself, had complained against it!!!

And his children actually love and looked up at him. But there are (weird) people here and in fanfiction.net, that are hellbent on proving how much Gohan and Goten hates him canonically to the point of coldblooded murdering him??!!

Now, Goku and Chichi are two people who are both strong (mentally and physically) understanding and kind and pure hearted, plus they’re both young and attractive. (Yes, little Goku was naive and didn’t know anything about sex BUT PLEASE LOOK at the series, especially in th 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai arc and the manga and you’ll notice all the changes about Teen Goku. Yes, he’s matured and is fully aware about many things including sex.) They had an arranged marriage and over time, they’re in love and both developed a really strong bond and raised a beautiful family, even with all the unnecessary stress and shit from evil assholes interrupting their peaceful lives from time to time. But he ALWAYS comes back to them and is repeatedly showed that he has special place for his family in his heart. And too many examples are also there throughout the entire series, including DBS too, where his wife and children LOVES him and has great pride in him. LOL. Best load of BS I’ve ever heard from these haters. If you’ve seen the scenes with him/chichi or read the manga then you know full well he loves her AND his kids.

LOL, read the manga from the START and FYI, the Dragonball series starts from when little Goku is introduced not from in the middle of when Radiz shows up. (Saw some so-called dbz fans stating Dbz is the original and DB is NOT canon like Dbgt, LOL just because Funimation aired Dbz first in America! *cough*idiots*cough*) Also, Toriyama drew Goku and Chichi riding the kintoun/nimbus as adults, so there goes your evil theory down the drain.

Many in the western world find arranged marriages to be funny and sometimes repulsive and regard Asians as traditional stuck ups. But I believe there are two sides of a coin. Both arranged marriages and love marriages have their pros and cons. Its not like love marriages work 100% and LOL too many of them are plagued with infidelity and shit! Seen statistics where the divorce rate is nearly 50% in western countries like America.

Whether it is love or arranged, trust, understanding and commitment is what drives towards a successful marriage.

I believe that the term ‘love marriage’ is a misnomer – is it that arranged marriages are devoid of love? Of course not! In fact, all marriages are an ‘arrangement’ between two people, with a promise to ‘love’, the bond grows stronger as they already understand each other.

Yes, at first he had no idea what is parenting and family life’s gonna be like. Yet he continued and learned throughout the time and from the way his family loves and adores him, he established that he is indeed a good husband and father… overcoming all the obstacles.

Learn to appreciate your OTP and respect other OTPS because whatever couples are made by Toriyama, not just in Dragonball but also his other series, are all endearing and adorable even with the tiny hints of romance. As he himself said he’s shy of romance but that does not mean he hates it.

HER MAIN CONCERN WAS PROTECTING GOTEN. SHE’S NOWHERE NEAR AS STRONG AS HIM BUT SHE TRIES TO PROTECT HIM FROM BLACK

I just want to mention this little thing in Episode 62:

Chi-chi is worried because Goku hasn’t been home in a while. 

Mainstream fandom would have you believe that Goku is never home, that when he trains, he stays away for months or even years at a time. But not counting the occasions in which he died or was in space, it’s all actually fan speculation.

Now, Chi-chi is freaking out in Episode 62 because Goku has not been home in a while, which means that this is actually very uncharacteristic of him. Why would she worry, if long disappearances were a common occurrence? How would she notice that something strange is going on this time, if Goku were never home in the first place?
