As a fan of heartstopper who is also a lesbian I hate how people keep painting the narrative that the show is bad representatiom because its not "gritty"enough or that its made for the straights. First off Heartstopper deals with some very serious topics; Charlie was accidently outed by Tao and got bullied to the point he developed an eating disorder, Nick is constantly battling biphobia, Elle was bullied for years while transitioning, Tara and Darcy have to deal with a huge amount of lesbophobia from their peers and the show recently added scenes that suggest Darcy has a difficult home life.

Just because the show has cute squiggles and leaves instead of a dark colour palate and moody lighting doesnt mean its not a serious show. Also Heartstopper may be cutesy but the novel isnt chaste and sanitized in the way people often portray it. Nick and Charlie have some serious conversations about intimacy and how to balance that with Charlie's insecurities due to his ED. They also have sex and there is even a scene where Nick and the girls go on a college trip and they stop to buy condoms and lube and have a conversation about safe sex.

Heartstopper is an incredibly important show. I think alot of its haters take for granted just how healing it is for queer teens to have a show about queer joy and community while still seeing the characters deal with serious issues in a way that feels authentic. Nicks whole arc with coming to terms with his bisexuality and coming out was a gift within itself and the shows constant messaging about never assuming people's identities and letting people figure themselves out is more relevant than ever.

I'm not saying Heartstopper is the pinnacle of queer representation in media. What I am saying is that this is a good show that has done good things for the community wheter you like it or not. I'm also saying that just because a teen show is cute and heartwarming and isn't hyper focused on drugs and sex doesn't mean it lacks depth not every show is euphoria. Not every teen is doing drugs and having loads of sex and thats fine.

Also stop trying to say Heartstopper doesnt match up to Ofmd or Young Royals or Good Omens. It doesn't have too they arent even in the same categories and believe it or not we can hold space for more than one popular gay show at a time without them being in competition.

the #radio silence tagging problem in the hazbin fandom

Text that states:
"A PSA:
STOP TAGGING #RADIO SILENCE
a message for my fellow Hazbin Hotel and one-sided RadioStatic fans

read more for elaboration and share if possible!!"

There is a drawing of Vox from Hazbin Hotel in his outfit pictured in the framed photo of him and Val on Val's desk. A thought bubble extending from him states "Alastor Alastor Alastor Alastor" several times that it fills the entire bubble.

There is a drawing of a daffodil above him.

said I would make a more eye-catching psa about this, here it is

Text that states:
"What to use instead?"

(highlighted in blue) "#onewaybroadcast
(decided via poll in March)"

(highlighted in red) "#radiosilence
(WITHOUT the space)"

**although #radiosilence WITHOUT the space is better than #radio silence with the space, I would still like to discourage it, will elaborate later

Text that states:
"What can you do?
if you see anyone tagging a hazbin post as
#radio silence
gently nudge them to change the tag to #onewaybroadcast or #radiosilence

inform them it's because a book of the same name exists."

and 90% of the time, they will listen and change accordingly.

and oh yeah. about that book.

Why shouldn't #radio silence be used?

Radio Silence is the name of a book set in the heartstopper universe by alice oseman.

The book cover of Radio Silence by Alice Oseman.
Aled Last from Radio Silence sporting an asexual flag on his left sleeve.

(which also features a canon aspec character, pictured on the right: aled last!)

and as such: #radio silence is their MAIN FANDOM tag. it is inconsiderate to flood their tag with content from another fandom, especially one as popular as hazbin hotel. but unfortunately, this is something that is already happening because of radiosilence as a ship tag.

and if you're not convinced this is something that bothers radio silence fans, here's some input from the fans themselves:

darkacademiaarchivist:

omg as a radio silence (the book) fan i've been thinking this but i didn't want to be rude to another fandom

Original Poster
onesidedradiostatic:

@darkacademiaarchivist I'm glad there's some of y'all are voicing it's an actual issue here!! I thought I might've been overreacting for thinking it's an issue for a fandom I'm not even in but this just validates my concerns

darkacademiaarchivist:

@onesidedradiostatic idk if I'd call it an issue but it's kinda annoying 🙈 using radiosilence without the space would probably be good ^^

#PLEASE I AM BEGGING #let me enjoy my little book plz

darkacademiaarchivist reblogged from onesidedradiostatic
#i would really appreciate that#i'd love to see posts about the book in that tag again please...

blehblarghblah reblogged from onesidedradiostatic

Yeaaah, it’s already too late. Appreciate the sentiment though!

It’s a damn shame too—I finally thought the book was getting more traction once again as well. Unfortunately when it comes to ship tags, fans can never get on the same page.
A post that states:
Is anyone else borderline pissed that there is Hazbin Hotel stuff under the radio silence tag now?
#like I hate this show #im sorry but I do #i just want to be able to follow my favourite book's tag without seeing it #osemanverse #radio silence

Wait, so is #radiosilence without the space still fine to use?

it's better than the mistagging of #radio silence with the space. but ONLY on tumblr, because on tumblr, we're allowed the privilege of adding spaces to tags.

I still would like to discourage it though, because for as long as this tag is popularly in use, there will constantly be people mistagging it with a space. I've done what I could to nudge people to fix their tagging but I can't constantly keep this up.

plus, on other sites such as tiktok and twitter, #radiosilence IS literally the main tag for the book because you literally can't add spaces for tags on those sites. so the radio silence book fandom is likely even more drowned out on those sites than here on tumblr because of the popularisation of #radiosilence as a tag for one-sided radiostatic.

I will not be forcing anyone to ditch #radiosilence without the space as a tag though, especially when it's already so popularly used and essentially impossible to get everyone to change it, but I encourage you to go for other options if you are willing to such as:

#onewaybroadcast

decided via a poll last month that was ongoing before #radiosilence was initially popularised, held by ChaoticAce2005 and me.

it's the tag that I always use for one-sided radiostatic and is decently used by others as well! and you won't run into any issue with clashing with the radio silence/osemanverse fandom at all this way. but again, I will not force you, all I ask is that AT THE VERY LEAST, don't tag #radio silence with the space and to nudge others to change it if they do.

please help to silence the radio silence tag!

(the tagging issue on tiktok and twitter are outside of my jurisdiction as I don't engage with hazbin on twitter and I don't even use tiktok, but if possible, it would be appreciated if anyone is able to spread the alternate tag #onewaybroadcast on those sites too to discourage flooding the radio silence book fandom! I believe the original person to coin #radiosilence has been doing work to discourage it on tiktok too, any help is appreciated!)

Maybe because sadness can be a deeper emotion for writers to explore

why is it easier to make your characters miserable rather than happy?

Just realized that the reason I love making friends on tumblr is because it’s exactly how you make friends on the playground as a six year old. No, I don’t know their name but they love mermaids too and built this awesome sand castle. No, I don’t know their age but their imaginary cheetah is friends with mine. You like this show? You like this character?? You can sing the theme song really loud??? Here is a flower crown. Here is a juice box. You can share my time and I might never see you again but part of you stays in my soul forever. In my mind we’re still on the swing set and the sky is blue and nothing will ever be wrong again.

Oh How much I love this post , it's literally my favorite post on tumblr, I take it for reference every time I try to explain how I feel . I've probably read it 10 times by now

I know SEVERAL afab nonbinary people who, as soon as they came out as nonbinary - immediately began dressing in ridiculous hyper-femme outfits they never would have worn before.  A lot of people see this and say shit like “Theyfab” or say they are only nonbinary for attention.  After all, look how femme they are.

But to me, this makes perfect sense.  When you are forced into the category of “woman” against your will, femininity is a chore.  It’s a job that you have.  As soon as you say no, I’m not a woman, suddenly femininity isn’t your job anymore.  It’s not a requirement.  It’s just a fun hobby you can get into.  Or a little treat sometimes.

Re-reading radio silence, is like reliving an old memory, a one that is "yours", a one that YOU own . And we never even get to do that with our "real life" "own" memories, and at this point I'm not even sure why we keep combining the word "real" with the word "life".
