I really think one of the best things we can do as people is just get more comfortable with embarrassment. Yes, it's an unpleasant emotion, but we gotta learn to let it pass over us and move on. The longer I'm alive the more clear it is to me how much harm we do just because we're embarrassed. How many parents punish their kids needlessly and/or super severely just because the parent feels embarrassed by the child's harmless behavior? We have to recognize that being embarrassed does not entitle us to harm others. Alongside this though, we have an obligation to each other to lower the stakes of embarrassment. Offer grace to each other. Stop filming people in public. Stop making fun of harmless cringe.

Daily reminder that we do not actually live in a dystopian movie put the apocalypse down and back away slowly. You know when your cleaning a room and you pull everything out of it's draws to sort through it and you're like "what the fuck have I done I'm never going to be able to tidy all of this" I think that's the stage we're at in the world. Thanks to social media we've pulled out all the messed up shit from the cupboards of the world, it was always there but now we can see it and we're going to have to sort it all out we made this mess and we can fix it. Falling to the floor sobbing will not clean a crusty room. A group of people working systematically (preferably with music in the background) will.

we (the universe) speak

here’s the thing: the universe will not give you meaning. it will not tell you what your purpose is, or why you or i or anything else exists. the universe does not know, or care.

here’s the thing: you are what gives the universe its meaning. the universe does not know its purpose until you tell it “here is why i am here, this is what my purpose is” and it knows, oh, that’s why i’m here too, so that your purpose can exist with the meaning you give it.

here’s the thing: the universe does not know to care until and unless we learn how to care, because we are part of the universe and the universe is part of us. there cannot be one without the other; we are how the universe learns itself and it is us who assign purpose to things.

here’s the thing: we tell the universe stories, and give it names, and shout into the void that we are here, we matter, and that is how the universe knows it matters too.

a green poster design, light colored text reads "refuse dystopia" "plant the seeds of change" and "Solarpunk can happen. now." in the center of the image is two stylized blanket flowers, a monarch butterfly, and stars dot around them. at the top of the image is a stylized sun in a rectangle.

New art!!!! I’ve been getting back into graphic design recently! 2024 is going to be my draw whatever I want without stressing era (I will probably stress)

Executive Function is the part of your brain that clicks on when you think "I should do this" and you then do it.

"I should do the dishes" •click, green light, does the dishes•

"I should pick that up and throw it in the bin" •click, green light, goes over, picks it up, throws it in the bin•

"I should take a shower" •click, green light, takes a shower"

When you are suffering from executive dysfunction, that switch doesn't work the same as it does for "normal" people.

"I should do the dishes" •click.... click..... click, click, clickclickclickclickclick.... red light, doesn't walk over and start the tap to do the dishes•

"I should pick that up and throw it in the bin" •click, yellow light, task saved until later, memory purge•

"I really, REALLY have to take a shower!" •click-ck-ck-ck-ck-ck-ck... red light, anxiety• "I HAVE to! I can't be outside if I don't shower!" •click.... red light•

Sometimes, you have to force yourself to overcome it, you have to go in there and manually wrench the entire system into green light.

And people can do this, from outside, it doesn't look like anything.

But you know that time you forced yourself to do something that was so far beyond anything you wanted to do that you were completely mentally drained? (Broke up with someone, confessed to something bad, swallowed pride and asked for help etc)

That can be exactly what a person with executive dysfunction experiences when they force themselves to do the dishes. It isn't always that hard, but it can be.

Like trying to purposefully slam your hand in a door or jump off a legit scary height into water that you can't bring yourself to do.

It's a mental illness that can be just as crippling as a physical disability.

And when people say "get over it", it's not like we've tried.

It's just that, you know.

"Get over it"

•click.... click..... click.... click-ck-ck... .... .... red light.•
This exact system also applies to things you WANT to do. When I finally have free time after work and my brain says, hey! We have some time. Let's play video games.

The input for playing video games tries to trigger over and over and over again. I want to play games. It's low effort. It's fun. I enjoy it. Hell, I know I'll enjoy it when I get started but that "on" switch never triggers and I sit there, blank face, usually staring at my phone. Next thing I know, I've wasted all the time I had free and have to do something else, like make dinner.

This is one of the best explanations of executive dysfunction I've read, as someone who suffers from it. People who don't have it really don't understand how challenging it is to want to do something but then getting roadblocked by your own mind.

A drawing of a little furry dragon in a greenhouse. The caption reads, "You're not messing everything up. It's just anxiety brain doin' what it do."
A drawing of a luna moth resting on a lavender sprig. The caption reads, "You're having a hard time dealing with it because it IS a hard thing to deal with. You're not weak."
A drawing of a bat flying through a magical crystal cave. The caption reads, "with all the stress and uncertainty, now's a good time to be SUPER patient with yourself"
A drawing of a dragon drinking water under an aurora-filled sky. The caption reads, "your needs are completely reasonable"
A drawing of two foxes snuggling while looking out at a moon-lit landscape. The caption reads, "You're not weak for struggling through this.
Sometimes life is just really hard."
A drawing of a polar bear looking up at the stars, smiling. The caption reads, "It's completely normal to need breaks. Rest is productive, too."
A drawing of a capybara enjoying a hot spring. The caption reads, "It's normal to be flawed, messy, and imperfect. You are enough."
A drawing of a raven in a eucalyptus tree. The caption reads, "It's good that you are you, just as you are today."
A drawing of a goldfinch sitting on a flowering fiddleneck stem. The caption reads, It's a big old world. There is absolutely room for you here."
A drawing of animals gathered around snacks and warm drinks in a forest. The caption reads, "It's a better day because you are in it."

Favorite Drawings of 2024. What animals should I draw in 2025?

Something that I think should be an important part of solarpunk aesthetics is screws.

Look at your smartphone. No screws. You've got to have specialized tools to get inside your phone to repair something. There are certain pieces of tech that are glued in place and glue can't be undone without permanently breaking the bond.

But screws!

You can take apart a broken old radio, repair what's broken, and, if you were careful in taking it apart, you can put it back together and have a fully functioning radio and all you need is a common screwdriver!

It's hard to build screws and other mechanical fasteners because it requires more planning than clamps and glues, but isn't that what solarpunk is all about‽ It's about care and sustainability and and a radio or a computer built carefully with repair in mind is a sustainable computer that stays out of landfills and in use.

Wolfspoot

I’m a young-adult woman with the hopes of becoming a well-known writer. I’m a dreamer, a music lover and a chaotic human being, curious about what the future will bring but without any idea of what to do with it. As for this tumblr, we’ll see. I will make an attempt to make an interesting place but for now I still have to figure out what to do with it.
