Eulogy

I loved you, show.

I have never felt closer to a character than to Abbie Mills.

The color of our skin was different, but I felt her in my soul. She was beautiful. She was strong. She was weak. She was kind. She was closed. She was everything I hoped to be and feared to be. 

There is no show without her.

I wish Nicole nothing but the best. I pray this was her decision and she moves on to other things.

I am grateful for what the show gave me. A chance to write things I think are lovely. That I am proud of. A chance to meet people I know are wonderful.

I’m crying over a TV show. I wish I were not.

I believed in this show. And I can never be bitter for what it gave me.

But I can and will be angry about the racist, awful, pointless, casual way it tossed aside a character who will never die for me.

Abbie Mills is alive. She is happy. And she is with the person her soul was made for.

What happens to Sleepy Hollow is immaterial. I will not watch.

I hopelessly hoped. I believed. I rooted.

And this.

Good luck, Nicole. You do deserve better.

But Abbie Mills also deserved better. 

Apparently the writers considered Ichabod to be the lead, and Abbie an important but not necessarily vital element.

I quit the show in season 2, and when I heard about this I wasn’t gonna post about it, but it’s just so awful on so many levels. as a black woman, I was so excited to be represented in a TV show, let alone as a *lead* in that show. I loved Abbie Mills as the wonderfully three dimensional, engaging, and strong woman she was, with her own significant ancestry and storylines.

everything in me rejects that line. as much as I shipped Ichabbie, Abbie Mills did not exist for Ichabod Crane. BLACK WOMEN DO NOT EXIST TO PROP UP THE STORIES OF WHITE MEN. it is a lesson history, and our media, have yet to learn. when I started the show watching the pilot, I had hope Sleepy Hollow would understand that. instead, it did worse – it pretended it did, and then revealed its true colors. We waited for Abbie’s storylines to be focused on, and we got a gradual sidelining of her character for a parade of bland white women that went in and out of Ichabod’s life, and the show’s focus on them.

RIP Grace Abigail Mills. You deserved better.

Sleepy Hollow

I don’t care if Sleepy Hollow gets a 4th season. If Nicole Beharie/Abigail Mills isn’t back I won’t be watching.

it’s not just that they killed her, it is the framing of her death, the idea that Abby’s whole purpose in life was to get Ichabod acclimated to the 21st century apparently? That her purpose was to be a footnote in Ichabod’s story, not a savior of the world as we were led to believe from the premise of the god damn show. It’s that we get this after two seasons of Abbie being treated like a secondary character when she’s one of the co-leads.

Sleepy Hollow

Yeah, spoilers. This is a hate letter. 

I’m almost 47 years old. And this is the first time in my history with television  that a single episode of something has made me regret ever watching a show to start with. I regret the time I spent on Sleepy Hollow. Because they just erased everything I loved about it with a single swipe. 

The Witnesses were the heart. How they were always there for each other. They came as a PAIR. You cannot kill one. That undermines every moment that one saved, supported or protected the other. All those “destinies entwined, we found each other, I do what you do, we will always be certain” moments have been undermined by her death. They’ve killed the beating heart of it, the bond that we’ve all been there for. 

If Nicole wanted out, they should have thought about the whole point of the show and either let them both live and ended it, or killed them both and ended it, or even killed them both and moved one with two new witnesses. ANY of that would have been better than killing one and leaving one alive, because that’s not what we’ve been here for over the last 3 years. 

The Witnesses, together, are the show. They’re a matched pair, a set, for better or worse. By killing Abbie and leaving Ichabod to carry on, they’ve stabbed the heart of the show and made every wonderful partnership moment meaningless. 

I am in awe that I cared more about the integrity of the show and the characters than the writers. But that’s fixed now, because I regret ever watching it. That is how much the death of Abbie Mills has soured me on the entire universe. I don’t even want to read fanfic. I am forever ruined on this show and its world. I never thought they could manage that, but god damn, they did. 

Goodbye Sleepy Hollow. And fuck you. (ANd if you’re renewed, and the new witness is white, I hope you all drop your genitals into a blender bye)

A Broken-Hearted Ex-Fan

So many media creators don’t realize they have incredible power.

They think it’s a game. An entertainment. A trifle.

They don’t see that they make the world. They give people hope, despair, a reason to get through one more week. They give us a chance to see ourselves – emotionally or physically – on screen.

They think their vision matters more than the people who watch. Who pay them their salaries. Who care until it hurts.

I think my finale takeaway to the Sleepy Hollow writers is this: You mattered to people.

Maybe you thought your show was stupid. But God, it mattered.

And you hurt people tonight. And with your casual cruelties to Nicole over the last two seasons. 

Whether it’s The 100 or The Walking Dead or Sleepy Hollow, what we see on our screen matters so much. 

Maybe it’s just a job to you. But you are causing true harm. 

strong female characters are allowed to have relationships, be it with a hero, an anti-hero, a villain, whomever.  being in a relationship DOES NOT diminish a female character’s strength or their agency.  a female character does not have to forever be a lone wolf in order to validate her strength.

It’s not just that they killed Joe, it’s that they killed Joe after shoving Joenny down our throats for so many episodes (at the expense of Ichabbie) and without using his character to reveal any more about Sheriff Corbin and his past with the Mills girls.

They are so comfortable with each other and their chemistry is so natural and apparent. I feel like I’m just screaming this into the void but… CAN Y'ALL JUST  GET TOGETHER ALREADY?!?!

What must've gone down at the first Sleepy Hollow writers' room meeting for season three:

Head Writer: So. We almost got canceled last season because instead of focusing on Ichabbie, platonic OR romantic, we put the spotlight on Katrina and didn't make her interesting or likable, and then we added in Hawley, who took away more time from the developing relationship between the Mills sisters. So we got rid of Katrina and Henry and Hawley and the fans came back to us. New year, new us, new season. What are your thoughts?

Writer #1: *raises his hand*

Head Writer: Yes?

Writer #1: *presses his fingertips to his lips for a moment* What if...we add in this super special awesome female character to be Crane's love interest in the past and then give him another love interest in the current time and then give Abbie a love interest that won't come to fruition until the last second and then instead of showing the blooming relationship between Ichabbie, we'll throw in those two things constantly until the fans are forced to recognize the true greatness of the show, which is things that are not Ichabbie?
