I've seen fan designs of malvago!Mateo before which are all very fun and very dark, so I wanted to share my vision of him (and Olivia) as well!
All malvagos in the show seemed to have some kind of animal motif and when I was thinking about what animal he would have I headcanoned that maybe a malvagos’ motif is determined by what animal their chanul is. Then I thought about Mateo with big sleeve claws and decided that was perfect. (Sloths are normally solitary and nocturnal, which fits Mateo as well).
Those fake claws used to be made out of metal but with his clumsiness he realized it was too dangerous for himself and changed them to silver coloured cloth.
Olivia has an axolotl motif because I think that axolotls are cool. I'm sure it would factor into her magic somehow as well, like if she was in a fight and got hurt she would be able to quickly heal and regenerate stamina.
[Image ID: A pencil crayon and ink fanart drawing of malvago!Mateo and malvago!Olivia from Elena of Avalor. Olivia is much shorter and standing on the left. She is wearing a gray hooded robe with pink polka dots and frills and yellow eyes on it, the whole outfit is reminiscent of an axolotl. She is holding her pink and gray drum wand in her hands and is looking off to the side of the frame with a slight smile. Mateo is standing on the right; he is wearing a white hooded robe with gold wavy stripes, silver claws on the ends of the sleeves, and a silver eye and nose pattern on the hood, which makes it resemble a sloth. He is holding his drum wand in his right hand and in his left he's holding a ball of magical fire which he is looking at intently. End ID]
for the fanfiction ask game, I'd be interested in hearing more about "Science + Magic = Chaos"!
Well, it's less of a "story" and more of a vague collection of ideas and headcanons I have about the wizards & and the scientists working together.
We see Isabel teaching Mateo about science back in the “Sceptre of Light” and I've always headcanon that it probably went the other way as well. It's not like he'd teach her as much as Olivia, but she'd ask him questions about how magic could work as a power source or as a scientific tool to help with studies. In “Team Isa” Isabel made the super chair for Christina and it seems to have some kind of automatic motor and the only power source that makes sense for it to have is magic. (Because there's no exhaust pipe for coal or gasoline, no hand cranks or keys, electricity doesn't seem to have been harnessed for batteries yet and it couldn't be nuclear, which leaves magic.)
It makes sense that Isabel & Mateo have been working on ways of incorporating magical elements into technology to assist with its functioning. As long as he's directly involved Mateo would love to test the limits of magic in innovative new ways. For Isabel this helps make her gadgets that otherwise wouldn't be able to function a reality. A perfect little creative team!
The whole chaos part comes from when you add even more scientists and wizards into this. As soon as Carla, Victor, and Olivia learn about this inventing stuff they're going to want a piece of it, and I'm sure that Tomiko and Professor Ochoa would also want to give their input. Now things have a much higher chance of being very creative or going terribly, terribly wrong.
