COVID-19: Lessons Learned From a Small Italian Village Lessons from a small Italian village could save thousands of American lives. A little village in Italy successfully fought against COVID-19 with simple actions that, if implemented in the US, could save thousands of American lives. Here is the story of Vo’Euganeo, the village of 3,341 inhabitants. Vo’ Euganeo had its first inhabitant die from COVID-19 on February 21st. The governor of the region decided to isolate the whole village from the other villages and ordered 3,341 coronavirus swab tests, one for each inhabitant of the village. When everybody got tested, the governor discovered that 3 % of the 3,341 inhabitants were positive for coronavirus COVID-19 but out of that 3 %, only half of those were symptomatic. The other half was completely asymptomatic yet very contagious. The governor decided to put the whole village on lockdown, to quarantine all the coronavirus positive people, and 2 weeks later, to retest everybody. He discovered that after 2 weeks of lockdown and quarantine, only 0.25% of the 3,341 inhabitants were carrying the virus, which was a great improvement compared to 3 %. He went on lining that 0.25 % and reopened the village. That strategy worked and the village has had no new case of COVID-19. What we can learn from this is that there is still time to save American lives especially in the states that have only a few cases of COVID-19. But we need to act quickly. In addition to physical distancing and lockdown, the key to saving lives will be: - Test a lot of the population (especially places with clusters of cases) without discriminating between people with symptoms and people without symptoms (both can be very contagious). - Get the results of the COVID-19 tests within a few hours. - Isolate and enforce quarantine for all people testing positive for the virus. - Track their contacts and quarantine their contacts as needed. - Retest before getting people out of quarantine to make sure they are negative.
