hey Tumblr how can i read articles which are behind a paywall again? i'm trying to read a medical article just for fun and no other reasons but it won't let me
I was here on this date. There an article publish in a literary magazine in Alabama called "FirstDraft" about some of my experiences at the Pedestrian gate @ FOB Diamondback, Mosul from Sept. 2006 til we moved to Q West in Feb. 07. I have tons of pics from that same gate. Same spot. Event gave the kids gifts there. One of those pics is published in the article. Small world!

Tutkijalääkäriohjelma
Olen kiinnostunut lääkärinammatista, mutta toisaalta ajatukset palloilevat kahden ammatin väliä. Toinen niistä on tutkijalääkäri, joka kiinnostaa myös hyvin paljon. Lääkärin koulutus kestää vuosia ja niin myös tutkijalääkärin. Tutkijalääkäriksi kouluttaudutaan samalla tavalla lääketieteellisen kautta. Esimerkiksi Helsingin yliopiston lääketieteellisen tiedekunnan tutkijalääkärikoulutusohjelma auttaa eteenpäin tämän uran saralla. Mikäli mielii tutkijan ammattiin lääketieteen saralla on lääketieteellinen se ala, jota pyritään opiskelemaan. Tutkijalääkäriohjelma kiinnostaa paljon, mutta siinä on omat haasteensa. Olen hiukan lueskellut koulutuksesta leaforum -sivuston kautta.
Tutkijalääkäriohjelma on kieltämättä vaikea taival. Oon tosi kiinnostunut, mutta tiedän kuitenkin sen että ei se missään vaiheessa tule olemaan helppoa. Tutkijalääkäriopiskelijana olisi tehtävä tosi paljon töitä. Viiden kesän ajan tutkijalääkäriopiskelijat työskentelevät tutkimusryhmissä aina kolme kuukautta, ennen edes lääketieteen perustutkinnon suorittamista. Edessä olisi kova työrupeama ja se on hienoa, että heti jo ensimmäisen opiskeluvuoden kesänä on mahdollisuus päästä käsiksi tutkimustyöhön, josta maksetaan myös palkkaa.
Usein opiskelijat saavat harjoitella täysin ilmaiseksi, mutta lääketieteellisessä tilanne on onneksi paljon parempi. Kun perustutkinto on suoritettu on aika tehdä töitä väitöskirjan parissa. Väitöskirja valmistuu siten, että opiskelija tekee täysipäiväisesti tutkimustyötä väitöskirjan ohjaajan ryhmässä yhden kauden. Väitöskirjan tarkoituksena on laatia kirjallinen selonteko tietystä aiheesta ja puolustaa sitä julkisesti tiedekunnan hyväksymällä tavalla. Väitöskirjan tekeminen voi olla oikein mielenkiintoista kaikessa haastavuudessaan ja sillekin on mahdollista hakea rahoitusta. Se on tosi hyvä systeemi, sillä siten on mahdollisuus keskittyä täysillä tutkimustyöhön ilman rahahuolia. Rahoitus on mahdollista saada väitöskirjaa varten jopa 18 kuukaudeksi. On kuitenkin pystyttävä perustelemaan, että rahoitukselle on riittävät perusteet ja väitöskirjan valmistumisajankohta on kohtuullinen. Tutkijalääkäriohjelma antaa tosi hyvät valmiudet tutkimustyölle, sillä sitä pääsee toteuttamaan opintojen aikana jo niin paljon.
Lapsuuden haaveista totta
Lääketieteellinen tutkimus on tärkeää työtä, jota ilman olisi jäänyt monta virstan pylvästä ottamatta lääketieteen alalla. Moni tauti olisi jäänyt parantamatta ja moni potilas menehtynyt kurjuuteensa ilman apukeinoa. Tutkiminen on aina kiinnostanut ja olen aina halunnut pyrkiä josskain elämän vaiheessa tutkimustyöhön. Myöhemmin ajatus on selkeytynyt ja se ala on lääketiede. Lääketieteellisellä tutkimuksella on minusta kaikista eniten arvoa juuri tällä hetkellä. Ihmisten hyvinvointi on kaikista tärkeintä ja olenkin aina ollut sellainen hyvin ihmisläheinen ja ihmisrakas persoona. Auttamisen tarve on aina ollut kova. Jo ihan lapsesta asti olen tykännyt hoitaa muita ja keksiä uudenlaisia tapoja tehdä asioita sekä uusia ratkaisuja pieniin arkisiin pulmiin. Äitikin vitsaili jo ennen kuin olin edes kouluikäinen, että siinä häärää tuleva tutkija. Ehkä vielä jonain päivänä olenkin ihan pätevä tutkija.
Suuri halu auttaa muita ja tehdä hyvää toisten ihmisten vuoksi sai minut lähtemään vuodeksi Afrikkaan Suomen Punaisen Ristin kautta. Olin siellä avustusjärjestön joukoissa tekemässä voitavani. Minulla ei ollut lääketieteellistä koulutusta tai mitään muutakaan niihin aikoihin, joten tein sen mitä pystyin. Ehkä vielä jonakin päivänä pääsen palaamaan sinne vapaaehtoisena lääkärinä, sillä paikallisten lääkäreiden työtä seurattuani tuli vain olo, että haluan tehdä samaa.
Lääkäreillä on suuri vastuu ja lääkäreitä tarvitaan äärimmäisen paljon. Lääkäreitä on niin paljon vähemmän, kuin mitä ihmisten todellinen tarve on ja lisäksi paikalliset ihmiset eivät pienestä vaivasta lääkäriin lähde. Vakavan sairauden kanssa kamppailevia oli lukemattomia. Siihen täytyy saada muutos. Tähän päivään mennessä olen nähnyt paljon sairauksia ja kurjuutta ja tuntuu että nyt on oma aikani auttaa mailmaa muuttumaan astetta paremmaksi paikaksi meille kaikille ihmisille täällä. Ehkä lapsuuden haaveet saadaan vielä todeksi jonakin päivänä, sillä kapuan ahkerasti polkua eteenpäin kohti tutkijan virallista titteliä. Haluan tehdä hyödyllistä työtä, jonka tuloksista tulee olemaan hyötyä monille muillekin kuin vain minulle. Tätä tietä on hyvä jatkaa ja tavoitella ahkerasti pitkäaikaisia haaveita.
Miksi kääntyä käännöstoimiston puoleen
Miksi kääntyä käännöstoimiston käännöspalvelujen puoleen, kun kaiken voi kääntää myös itse? Apuna on nykypäivänä näppärä Google Translator ja kaikki kirjastosta löytyvät sanakirjat. Aina voi myös kysyä tuttavilta, joilta löytyy kielipäätä ja kyky taitaa tiettyä kieltä oikein hyvin. Siinä säästyy toisille isolta rahalta tuntuva summa, kun ei tarvitse kääntyä käännöstoimiston puoleen, vaikka aikaa saattaakin tuhlautua tuntikausia. Sitä voi sitten itsekseen pohtia, että kumpi on tärkeämpää, säästynyt raha vai säästynyt aika?
Ei nimittäin ole aina kovin helppoa saada aikaan kelvollista tekstiä, jos lähtee tekemään käännöstyötä Googlen mahtavan huvittavan Google Translatorin ja tuttavien avustuksen avulla. Kun jääräpäisesti kuitenkin tekee näin, niin silloin jälki voi olla aika kohtalokasta. Siinä mielessä kohtalokasta, että virallisemmissa yhteyksissä saattaa sattua vakavia asiavirheitä tai totaalisia väärinymmärryksiä tai sitten toista ei ymmärretä vain laisinkaan, kun papereissa lukee ihan mitä sattuu. Jos tekstejä käännetään sitten verkkoon, mikä yleistyy jatkuvasti, niin silloin vaarana on yleensä vain se, että yritys tai kuka tahansa muu tekstin julkaisija joutuu some-kansan pilkan kohteeksi.
Ei kukaan varteenotettava yritys tahdo tehdä itsestään naurunalaista verkossa, eihän? Siksi kannattaa jo unohtaa se Google Translator ja ostaa kerralla hyvä palvelu, jonka jälkeen ei tarvitse enää itse nähdä vaivaa. Kun asiat on hoidettu kerralla kuntoon, voi huokaista helpotuksesta ja todeta, että nyt rahat tuli käytettyä juuri oikeaan osoitteeseen sen sijaan että harmittelisi sitä, kuinka huonolla tolalla kaikki yhä monien työtuntien jälkeen näyttää olevan. Siinä jo riittävästi syytä kääntyä ammattilaisen puoleen.
Tekstien kääntämisestä
Suurin osa työstäni on eri teksiten kääntämistä alkuperäiskieleltä toiselle kielelle tai päinvastoin. Enemmän on tilanteita, joissa käännän alkuperäistekstiä toiselle kielelle, jolloin sen tekstin tietoja tai sisältöä tarvitsevat ihmiset ja eri tahot kykenevät käsittelemään tekstiä omalla kielellään. Se on usein parempi niin, että teksti käännetään kun tekstistä tarvitaan tärkeää tietoa, jotta vältytään mahdollisilta väärinkäsityksiltä. Moni kuvittelee, että kääntäjän työ on hyvin helppoa ja yksinkertaista. Sitä eletään siinä harhaluulossa, että kääntäjäksi voi ryhtyä kuka tahansa, joka osaa jotakin kieltä riittävän hyvin. Ei se vain riitä. Kääntäminen kun ei oikeasti olekaan niin kovin yksinkertaista, ei ainakaan aina.
Etenkin kun käännät asiakirjoja viranomaistahoilta toisen maan viranomaistahoille, voi joutua miettimään asioita hitusen pidempään ja huolellisemmin kuin mitä olisi etukäteen edes osannut kuvitellakaan. Kääntäjiltä on löydyttävä myös hyvät tekniset taidot, sillä kaikki se tieto ja taito, mitä itseltä ei löydy tietyn käännöstehtävän toteuttamiseen on pystyttävä löytämään muualta. On osattava hakea tietoa luotettavista lähteistä ja on osattava käyttää uusimpia käännöstyökaluja, kuten tietyt kätevät termityökalut sekä käännösmuistiohjelmat. Uusia tukiohjelmia löytyy koko ajan ja niistä on suuri hyöty ja ilo, mutta alkuun voi mennä aikaa, että oppii hallitsemaan uudet työvälineet.
Käännöstyön on myös tapahduttava riittävän nopeasti kaikesta vaikeudestaan huolimatta. Etenkin kun on yksityisyrittäjä niin silloin se on vain yksinkertainen fakta, että käännöstyössä ei voi kestää liian kauan. Jokainen ylimääräinen minuutti, jonka käytät hitaaseen työhön on rahaa pois omasta palkastasi. On oltava tarpeeksi hyvä kääntäjä ollakseen riittävän nopea käännöstöissä. Tiukan asiasanaston kääntäminen on myös oma erikoisuutensa, johon eivät kaikki kykene. Et voi alkaa opiskelemaan uuden alan terminologiaa työn vuoksi, vaan ne oikeat termit ja muut välttämättömyydet on osattava joko etukäteen tai sitten unohdettava koko työ ja annettava se toisen tehtäväksi. Kaikesta tästä voi jo päätellä, että tekstien kääntäminen on vastuullista työtä, eikä tosiaankaan siitä yksinkertaisimmasta päästä.
Käännöspalveluiden kysynnän kasvu
Tarve käännöspalveluille on kasvanut vuosien saatossa hurjasti. Ennen ei ollut tarvetta käännöspalveluille siinä määrin kuin nyt, mutta tilanne on muuttunut paljon. Maailmalla tapahtuu suuria muutoksia ja suuret ihmismassat liikkuvat pois sodan jaloista joutuen jättämään omat kotinsa ja kotikylänsä. Tilanne on ikävä ja saa aikaan suuret pakolaisvirrat länsimaihin. Suomikin on vastaanottanut viime vuosina maahan enemmän pakolaisia ja maahanmuuttajia kuin koskaan aiemmin. Moni on saanut myönteisen oleskelulupapäätöksen ja moni taas on joutunut palaamaan sodan sortoon. Oli tuomio sitten kumpi tahansa, niin nämä Suomeen virtaavat ihmiset ja heidän auttajansa kamppailevat monesti sen kanssa, että yhteistä kieltä ei löydy tai sitten asiakirjoja ei ole saatavilla viranomaistahojen haluamalla kielellä. Siinä vaiheessa esimerkiksi turvaudutaan käännöspalveluja tarjoavien yritysten apuun ja mehän autamme oikein mielellämme.
Käännöspalveluiden tarpeen kasvu ja kasvun syyt ovat aika selkeästi näkyvillä. Kaikista eniten työtarjouksia ja pyyntöjä tuleekin nykyisin viranomaisilta, jotka tarvitsevat käännösapua virallisten asiakirjojen kanssa, jolloin on oltava äärimmäisen tarkka, että jokainen sana on juuri sitä mitä pitäisikin. Näin säästytään väärinkäsityksiltä ja väärinymmärretyksi tulemiselta, mikä voi tietyissä tilanteissa olla kovin kohtalokasta. Kun tehdään töitä ihmisten parissa on pidettävä huolta, että viesti välittyy oikein ja ymmärrys on molemmin puolista. Tässä asiassa tulkit ja kääntäjät tarjoavat ammattitaitoaan erilaisten tilanteiden tueksi.
Pakolaiskriisin ja globalisaation myötä yhä enemmän saamme seuraamme ihmisiä eri maista, jolloin tarve käännöspalveluille vain kasvaa ja meille kääntäjille riittää työtä. Siinä mielessä tilanteeseen saa olla tyytyväinen. Minun kohdallani se ainakin on oikein positiivinen juttu, että käännöstyötä riittää. Olen siis pyörittänyt tätä yhden miehen käännöstoimistoa jo yli vuosikymmenen ja tässä blogissa kirjoitan kokemuksen vankalla äänellä käännöspalvelujen kehityksestä ja nykytilanteesta. Samalla lukijakunta saa jonkin sortin käsityksen tai ainakin pienen pintaraapaisun siitä, mitä kääntäjän työ on ja mitä kääntäjän työnkuvaan kuuluu.
Suomalaiset lastenelokuvat
Tykkään käydä leffoissa ihan itsekseni, mut myös seurassa. Hyvässä seurassa tietyt leffat on jopa hauskempia kuin itsekseen katsottuna. On muutamia leffagenrejä, joita katsoo mielummin yhdessä kuin yksikseen. Niitä on just komediat ja lastenleffat. Kattelen elokuvia ja tykkään elokuvista mitään kategoriaa syrjimättä ja lastenleffatki menee oikein mieluusti. Niitä tulee vaan harvemmin katsottua yksikseen.
Mulla on onneksi kaksi kummipoikaa, jotka sattuu olemaan vielä aika saman ikäisiä. Poitsujen kanssa tulee käytyä leffoissa useinki. Vuoden 2016 parhaita leffoja on ollu Risto Räppääjä ja Yöhaukka, joka käytiinki just poikien kanssa yhdessä katsastamassa. Pojat tykkäsi ja oli se munki mielestä oikein nasta pala.
Risto Räppääjä-elokuvat on ollu tosi suosittuja ja eiköhän niitä vaan lisää tule. Risto Räppääjä ja Yöhaukka on leppoisa ja mun silmiin oikein hyvin tuotettu suomalainen elokuva. Risto Räppääjä-leffat perustuu Sinikka ja Tiina Nopolan kirjoittamiin kirjoihin ja on tullu tunnetuksi vielä suuremmalle kansalle leffojen kautta, jotka on ohjannut Timo Koivusalo – yksi Suomen parhaista elokuvaohjaajista. Timo Koivusalo on kyllä oikein tuottelias suomalainen elokuvaohjaaja. Risto Räppääjä-leffoissa erityisen kivaa on elokuvien musiikkimaailma. Osa leffasta on ikään kuin tarinaa eteenpäin kuljettavaa musikaalin pätkää. Risto räppää ja rummuttaa ja lapset tykkää kuunnella Risto Räppääjän lauluja, jotka on tosi mukaansa tempaavia ja helposti muistettavia. Mullaki jäi pyörimään leffan tunnarit sun muut mieleen, mikä kertoo jo siitä miten tarttuvia sävelmiä se sisältää.
Aikuiselle Risto Räppääjä oli ihan mukiin menevää katsottavaa ja onhan se kieltämättä Suomen parhaita lastenelokuvia sarjana, mut aikuiselle se kävi loppua kohden vähän pitkästyttäväksi. Pikkuisen alkoi tarina junnuttaa paikoillaan, mut lapsille leffanautinto pysyi alusta loppuun asti yhtä hyvänä. Pojat tykkäs ja sanoi heti perään toivovansa Risto Räppää ja Yöhaukka-leffan kotiinki DVD:nä. Siinä aika hyvä joululahjaidea pojille, jos vanhemmat eivät jo ole suostuneet leffaa ostamaan.
Suomalaiset elokuvat 2016 vol 2.
Jatkan vuonna 2016 julkaistuista suomalaisista elokuvista, sillä tuntuu et niin paljon niistä riittäisi sanottavaa. Ois varmaan mentävä johonkin elokuvakerhoon jutustelemaan elokuvista kun sen verran on tullut katsottua kaikenlaisia elokuvia että juttua kyllä riittää. Yksi vuoden 2016 ehkä odotetuimpia elokuvia koko kansan näkökulmasta oli Luokkakokous 2, joka meni mauttomassa huumorissaan ihan uudelle tasolle.
Olihan se Luokkakokous 1 aika hauska, vaikka oliki myös toisaalta mauton ja älytön. Luokkakokous 2 veti kuitenki potin kotiin ja se yksi katselukerta riittää oikein hyvin. Mä en sitä elokuvaa toiste viitsi katsoa. Joskus elokuvien huumori menee vaan niin älyttömäksi ettei se oo enää hauskaa ja näin kävi mulle Luokkakokous 2:n kanssa. Toiset tykkää mut mä tykkään nauraa vähän erilaisille asioille kuin esimerkiksi nekrofilialle, mikä nostatti aika monen muunki elokuvaa katsoneen karvat pystyyn. Johonki se raja on vedettävä! Mut näin sitä käy kun laittaa saman elokuvan sisään kaikki Suomen tunnetuimmat koomikot ja antaa vielä vähän päätäntävaltaa siitä mitä leffassa näytetään. Hyviä näyttelijöitä mut aika surkea leffa.
Toinen kotimainen elokuva, jonka julkaisua mä oikein odotin koko kesän oli Hymyilevä mies, jonka ohjasi Juho Kuosmanen. Se kyllä lunasti odotukset ja oli oikein mielenkiintoinen. Pääosissa nähtiin Jarkko Lahti, Eero Milonoff sekä Oona Airola. Eero Milonoff on vielä aina ollut yksi mun suosikkinäyttelijöistäni jostakin syystä ja elokuva Hymyilevä mieshän kertoo siis suomalaisesta nyrkkeilijästä Olli Mäestä, joka oli ensimmäinen suomalainen mies joka otteli nyrkkeilyn maailmanmestaruudesta. MM-matsi ei menny Olli Mäen osalta aivan putkeen vaan hänet tyrmättiin ottelussa. Kaikesta huolimatta hymy ei hävinny miehen naamalta, vaikka kuinka lyöty oli ja Mäki kertoo päivän olleen hänen elämänsä onnellisin päivä. Aika hieno asenne ja aika hieno elokuva, mä tykkäsin Hymyilevästä miehestä tosi paljon. Ei oo mikään ihme, että elokuva noteerattiin Cannesin elokuvajuhlillaki tänä vuonna.

“i always used to do poetry when i was really young, but i never took myself seriously,” brad renfro, now 13, admits. “i would do poems that were very demented.”
that’s changed. today, the talented teen from knoxville, tennessee takes himself and his creative projects very seriously indeed. and as evidenced in his 1994 film debut the client and last year’s the cure and tom and huck, brad also works very hard in hope that he’ll be judged for his talent as well as his good looks. it’s a trait you’ll find in all of his endeavors.
“i play in a band,” brad says, “but i don’t want to become like this teen idol where the only reason somebody would buy my record is because some girl who saw me in a movie was like, ‘oh my god, he’s so cute. i’m gonna buy this album.’”
though it’s been suggested to brad that those good looks might lend themselves to good album sales if he did put out a cd someday, that’s not what he wants. “you don’t understand,” he said, “i want you to take my music seriously as well as the rest of my art.”
the bottom line is that brad wants people to appreciate his serious side. so far, he's earned the respect of his professional peers. oscar-nominated actress susan sarandon, who co-starred with him in the client, has said of her young co-star: "he did a very professional job. he worked hard. and he came prepared. that's a lot more than i can say for some leading actors who are three times his age with three times as much experience."
“a tear ran down my cheek…”
brad's talent and work ethic have also earned him some serious comparisons to other peers. "i read in a magazine that someone compared myself to river," brad's said of the late river phoenix, another young actor who had his share of troubled teen roles. "a tear ran down my cheek that somebody would compare me to river phoenix. he's someone who's completely a genius."
like any up-and-coming actor, brad hopes this appreciation for his artistry will continue. and if critics' reviews are any indication, he's sure to be rewarded with respect. "i just wanna try to keep it that way," he replies.
yet as much as brad wants to be taken seriously, there still exists within him a silly side, as many classmates and co-stars can attest. brad's been known to emerge from his hotel room with underwear on his head for the sheer amusement of his co-workers.
but despite brad's light-hearted tendencies and
much-rumored roughness, it's respect that he craves as an actor-or a musician, or a poet. basically, brad says, "i like people to take me seriously for whatever the hell i am."

Suzy, a wholesome-looking 29-year-old model who also does the Dannon Yogurt television commercials, says she and 'Town & Country' wanted to do a "tasteful" nude with a sportive tie-in. At the end of the all-day photo session which, incidentally was staged atop a remote mountain overlooking Lake Tahoe, Suzy expressed a great sense of personal accomplishment.
"I felt I had finally expressed myself." she says.
Suzy's best friend, Tish Greene, 27, a champion equestrian accompanied the photographer, Douglas Kirkland. Suzy, a bubbly extrovert, says she needed strong female moral support from someone who understood her motives.
"I did the nude because I want to alert women that active sports are a way of conditioning the body.", she says "A woman should be able to stand in front of a mirror with or without clothes and like the way her body looks. Frankly, I needed to have an enlightened female to cheer me on." says Suzy. "We both believe that sports are an exciting way of liberating the female body."
Liberation on any level is hard to come by.
Recently the Hart Ski Company of Saint Paul, MN asked her to endorse their products. When final contract negotiations got under way, a Hart executive made an indelible impression. "He told me I'd surely marry a millionaire and therefore I wouldn't be be needing much money from the endorsement." says Suzy about the contract she never signed.
On women's liberation:
"When a woman gets really angry at the way things are, a tough determination sets in. Then she discovers it's a big challenge to get your point across. If a woman has any success in blazing a trail - however minor - she begins to to feel the tremendous 'up' of accomplishment. But you've really got to be mad first.".
Suzy, a UCLA dropout is deep into mind development courses that further build confidence through self-awareness. Her mother, Stevia Korzan Chaffee, an Olympic skier of the late '30s never went to college. "My mother is a brilliant, sophisticated, well-read woman who has spunk and great incentive." she says. "These are the things that count and you can't find them in a classroom."
Suzy's father, Keene Chaffee, an engineer, who is part owner of a Rutland, VT firm. Patch Wagner is perfecting an invention of a carburetor which cuts down on pollution. Did her parents object to her posing in the nude?
"My parents are incredibly modern." says Suzy. "At a certain point in life, the children become the teachers of the parents. They were against the Playboy layout and I respected their opinions. They supported me when I did the Town & Country nude.". Before Suzy's grandmother, 84 year-old Helen Chaffee was shown the magazine with Suzy on the cover - the nude was carefully removed. "That's where the generation gap exists." laughs Suzy.
There has been no lack of suitors in Suzy's life but she has never married. " I have seen lots of beautiful qualities in a lot of different men", she says "But I have never found all the beautiful qualities in one man.". If and when Suzy does marry, it will be an open marriage because she is a believer in the "totality" of freedom.
Suzy says "It's foolish for society to impose the restriction of one man to the married woman. I'm not advocating sexual promiscuity but I think it' possible for a woman to have many kinds of relationships with many men and it shouldn't affect the status of the marriage. The husband in turn should have the same freedoms."
Suzy Chaffee, a thoroughly modern woman feels that the nude photo has opened prestigious new doors. Other status magazines want to talk about nude layouts. And she's just signed to a syndicated television show, 'World of Skiing' to air coast-to-coast in November 1975. Suzy, the host, will interview glamour skiers on and off the slopes of the world's big-name resorts. "Skiers are in love with a risk sport and they're uninhibited - even in conversation," she says.
About the nude picture that boosted her career: "The streaking syndrome started a new feeling about freeing the body. Nude beaches are getting more common. The world was ready for Suzy in her birthday suit.".

There is something beautiful about being me
There is something beautiful about being me. I do not know if it is the endless amount of comfort I apply to myself like a muscle relaxer or maybe if it is the solace I find in my own company, my own mind, and conscience. Or maybe if it is the glowing brown skin adorned with artwork. Or the tireless hands who have life riddled between the palms. Sometimes, however, my mind is not a nice place to be. It whispers lies into reality and convinces me that what I see before me is more than it is. And it is not something I can run from, but rather something that has backed me into a corner and berated me. There is no running from the labyrinth of possibilities my mind lays in front of me. I wish I could count endless sheep or drown out the sound of the whispers with a repeated mantra over and over and over again, but my thoughts reign supreme. My thoughts control my day, my face, and my hands. But this mind that runs rampant throughout the day is mine to own. It is mine to claim and let it be known, there is a beauty to this madness. The beauty of seeing all sides of the same coin. Endless realities mean I do not have to be forced into one. There is beauty to owning something so wild, so dangerously quick, livid, and winding. There will always be another turn, another roundabout, or sharp right. And at the end of the day, at the end of my days, when my bones ache and my body begs for rest, there will still be my wild mind wreaking a beautiful havoc in my head.

On a flying visit to his native land last week, was Nicky Mason of the Pink Floyd Pop Group (sic), who has been staying with the Rutter family at Millhanger, Thursley. Lindy Rutter has won praise for her choreography of the Farnham Youth Theatre production “Double Take” and for her solo dance which opens the show. She is to teach at Frensham Heights and will also be taking movement classes at RADA.
Nicky has just made an LP with the Pink Floyd, “The Saucerful of Secrets” which is number nine on the LP charts. The group has also recently ended a tour of the USA where they are becoming very popular. The trip took them from New York, through Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle etc, etc and but for the election rumpus in Chicago, they would have made a return trip there.
Nicky spoke to Youth in Action on Friday, the day before he flew to Belgium to take part in a music festival. A busy life and rather different from what he imagined it would be like when a student of architecture at Regent Street Polytechnic, where the Pink Floyd originated three years ago. The group has been professional for about 18 months”
“A quick Google search has since revealed that “Nicky” as he is called here, but now known as Nick Mason, and Lindy were married the following year, 1968, and had two children, before divorcing 20 years later. She is an accomplished flutist. He is the only remaining original member of the famous band. Note how the journalist refers to them as The Pink Floyd! Of course, they are known today as simply Pink Floyd. Another strange twist is that Millhanger was, of course, latterly purchased by Roger Taylor of Queen, who lived there until around 10 years ago”.

Story #25, which is another CPE article. Based on true events.
“It’s negative, no cancer markers found”, the doctor said, perusing the paper with dots and numbers which made no sense to me. I exhaled sharply, not realizing I was holding my breath. Like a prisoner awaiting execution. Like a wanderer praying for a fountain in a desert to quench his thirst. Inadvertently her words defined the happiest moment in my life. My child was healthy. I leaned against the wall feeling my legs going wobbly. Silent tears ran down my cheeks. Relief. Contentment. Delight. Joyfulness. Gratitude.
I couldn’t stop scrambling over my memories to the day when her words, so easily and sharply, shattered my world to pieces. It all started with medical advice to vaccinate a child. A one-year-old son of mine. Preliminary blood work was recommended to exclude medical conditions which might cause after-vaccination negative side effects. No big deal. We did it before dozens of times with my older kid. But that time some indicators in his blood turned out abnormally high pointing to organs where his body suddenly started failing him. Failing to cancer.
“It’s negative. It’s negative. It’s negative”, I kept echoing in my head time and again. The walls of the fragile fortress of my mind were reconstructed back. Suffice it to say, the fact that my child was safe and sound was happiness in its pure form. That was a moment to treasure. The memory to cling to. Indeed, to catch these dear moments and keep them close to heart is worth doing.
To me, it was a major epiphany. One does not need to chase ethereal dreams and get on the top of their career to make every moment meaningful. No need to be married, get promoted at work, buy the latest Tesla to feel happy here and now. This day and age you are alive and healthy. That’s what matters.

Story #19, that is about another amazing workshop I hosted for the Writing Incubator Project.
As we are about to embark on a fall season, I’d like to share a few words about the session I was honored to host in May 2022.
The workshop I prepared was about “Stealing lexis from real articles to use in your CPE articles” (and any other articles as well).
So how do you write a CPE article? Bet you’ve heard dozens (hundreds, thousands even?) of times that you should read real articles, explore the language, highlight some nice examples, and make lists of collocations or idioms you could use in your own piece. You do it mostly intuitively, just relying on your inner self to cue you, which is the right thing to do.
But where do you begin? How do you know what’s a good and what’s a bad choice? That’s what we had a look at in our Writing incubator project in May. And here I will succinctly summarize it for you in a god-knows-how-many-words blink.
The technique we used is called investigative reading. However, before you even start opening your favorite sources, be it NY Times, The Guardian, or the Washington Post, for authentic articles in order to mine any good lexis you could borrow, create your template. And what do I mean by that? Find or invent the prompt of the article you intend to write and go through it. Then start reading articles on the topic. Highlight the language. See what you can borrow. Explore it. Put it in your article. Toss some away. Experiment.
Is it something you can do with real articles for your blog? Sure thing, just keep the plagiarism rule in mind. Three consecutive words is borrowing, and more is stealing.
The trick is, the more you write, the more you notice, how words and phrases naturally and effortlessly find their way into your pieces. You’ll start having your own unique style with a bunch of favorite chunks and structures. NO secret here. You just read some more, write some more, rewrite some more.
On a related note, it occurred to me that I've never posted the article I wrote for that workshop following the aforementioned guidelines. So here it is, story #37 on my blog.

The prompt: An international travel organization is publishing a book entitled Travel Changes Lives and has asked for contributions. You decide to submit an article about a travel experience that has changed your life. You should briefly describe the experience, explain what made it so special, and assess the significance of the changes in your life as a result.

I was stuck. Not in heavy traffic or at the airport waiting for a layover, but in my life. Suspended between maternity leave one and maternity leave two, with the mantra playing like a broken record in my head: cook, clean, feed, repeat. I swear a ten-hour redeye would be a mix of joyfulness and buoyancy in comparison. So, when my husband asked if I wanted to embark on a solo trip, and despite having barely traveled on my own before, let alone in the middle of winter, I was uplifted by the idea so much that I could fight tooth and nail for it if needed.
Italy was cheap and relatively easy. I whiled away my days eating (amen to Italian food), praying (to Italian gods of food, of course), and loving. I was more full up with love than ever. I learned to love myself again. I woke up so early that the stillness hung over unpeopled avenues and squares, and then strolled down the riddle of streets to a bustling quarter of the city, checking cafes and shops strewn everywhere where my eyes landed. It became my daily routine for three days. Better yet, three lovely days. I was so overjoyed with my newfound self that even a noisy couple in an adjoining room of the hotel, which walls apparently had been made of cardboard, didn’t bother me in the slightest.
One might think there was nothing special about my getaway, but let me remind the readers about two toddlers left at home, basically tied to me 24/7, and no personal space left. So every minute of that trip was counted, stored away in the memory box, and treasured. I was a walking commercial screaming out loud “good memories are priceless; for everything else there’s Mastercard.” For once, I could put myself first and feel no guilt over my decision.
Everything good comes to an end, and so did my holiday, which I do not regret in the slightest. Eventually, it was that trip that helped me if not cut, then at least loosen the umbilical cord connecting me to my offspring. The distractive overprotectiveness reframed itself into mentorship and friendship. The kids discovered the kindergarten, and I rediscovered myself as a professional. We still spend plenty of time together as a family but now everyone is given enough space to breathe and explore the world around us.
Story #17 which is a CPE article about traveling.
That was based on a prompt that asked to describe the experience of “Traveling with a companion who spoiled your vacation”.
Imagine a pretty woman in her prime age traveling worldwide five times a year. Imagine her sacrificing tour adventures for such mundane things as raising a child. Imagine the woman jumping on a plane and flying to the seaside after three years of home-locked existence. Wasn't she all that excited? I bet she was! Well, I am that woman.
After my long-standing maternity leave, I was finally ready to head off somewhere to dig my toes into soft ivory sand and feel the vanilla-scented breeze. I envisioned myself with damp hair sticking to my neck and sun-kissed cheeks, jogging along the beach at the crack of dawn and buying strawberries in a Styrofoam cup at the local market. The only thing dissimilar from my past pilgrimages was my infant daughter Ann standing as my travel companion. I thought ahead of everything: a hotel with high junior chairs, an allergy-free menu, and a childcare center nearby. My suitcase was filled to the brink with diapers, pacifiers, soft packs of fruit smoothies, and formula Ann was still sipping first thing in the morning. There was nothing I failed to consider. Or that's what I thought.
Our private paradise ended abruptly on the third day. I remember reaching for Ann at night, wincing suddenly as if my hand had been burnt. I've never felt her so terribly hot trembling as if she was close to having a seizure. Next several days we would have spent in a hospital. On the 10th day, the GP gave her a clean bill. On the 11th we left for home.
It could be argued that our situation was no more than an "unlucky" break, but there is something I have to say if you are a parent traveling with a kid. Take it easy. I bet if you try, try really hard, you’ll be able to find something good even in that seemingly terrible predicament. Good memories are priceless. For everything else there's MasterCard.
