A movie scene that has always stuck with me for some reason has always been when a young superman either gained/lost control of his x-ray vision. The panic, the horror, the overwhelm... I dunno, something something sensory overload and autism. You feel me? I relate too much to superman and he wasn't even my favorite hero as a kid. Maturing is getting attached to superman.
I debated whether or not I should make this post, but decided that I have to, because there are so many people, especially in America who do not know this. And it is SO important. So please take 5 minutes of your time and read this.
Let me explain to you why Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s statements about autism are extremely dangerous and should deeply concern you (not only if you are autistic)
For that you need to understand a bit about the history of autism, so you can see the parallels to what is happening now.
The whole "high functioning autism" thing exists for a reason. Not the one you think though. You have probably heard that "high functioning autism" was called Aspergers Syndrome before. This concept was created during the 1930s and 1940s in Austria (although it was not called Aspergers syndrome back then). There is a lot more to this, but for the purpose of this post I will keep it short.
The nazis saw every disabled or mentally ill person, including children as unworthy to live. The main purpose of the Asperger Syndrome was to separate the children into two groups. The ones they could use for their causes, indoctrinate with the nazi values and force to work. And those we would call people with high support needs today, the group they deemed as not worth to even be alive. (This does not mean that "high functioning autistic people were not also killed, they were.)
This diagnosis was a death sentence for those children. To be clear, the nazis did not only kill autistic children and adults but also mentally ill and disabled children and adults.
The next thing you have to understand is that a shocking amount of people knew about this back then and there were parents who willingly and even gladly handed their children to those institutions, knowing they would kill their children, because they themselves saw their own children as worthless, a burden and not valuable to society.
Back to what Robert F. Kennedy said. One of his first statements was "They will never be able to pay taxes." (Refering to autistic children, especially targeting those with high support needs) And that tells you everything you need to know. Because that is how he and a concerning amount of people determine the worth of a person. If they work, if they pay taxes, if they consume and contribute to the economy. If not, they are seen as worth less than working people.
Sounds familiar, does it? Because the nazis used the same measurements to determine peoples worth. That is no coincidence.
They always come for the vulnerable first.
They always come for the minorities first.
It is this belief that a certain group of people is worth more or less than others that is so dangerous!
Because many people already see neurodivergent, mentally ill and disabled people as less. Less worthy, less useful, less human. So it's easy for him to go ahead with those statements, because it does not concern the majority of people.
So please educate yourself about the topic, read into what happened in Nazi Germany. Read about how it happened, how everything started! Because if we don't pay attention to this now, it might be too late!
Reposting for my ND friends!!
REMINDER!!!!
Autism acceptance month starts THIS SATURDAY!
If you/someone you know needs to buy an AAC app, almost all companies have huge sales!!!! (They also do this in October for aac awareness month)
YALL I JUST TOOK THOSE 4 LIKE AUTISM TESTS ON THAT ONE WEBSITE MOST PEOPLE GO TO SELF DIAGNOSE CAUSE OUR CURRENT SYSTEM IS KINDA ASS AT DIAGNOSING PEOPLE WHO ARE WHITE MEN AND I GOT THAT IM PRETTY MUCH CONFIRMED AUTISTIC ON ALL OF THEM????
I hope black girls with depression have a good day today.
I just met a mother of an autistic child who thinks vaccines cause autism but is still pro-vaccine. Didn't know ppl like her existed tbh
Oh the joys of being autistic but still able to handle hair appointments...
Only to have to hide in the fucking bathroom while my hair processes because 4-5 people are snapping their gum
I am pretty bad at finishing projects but at least I finished it! I will be celebrating with a plain Rice Krispies Treat now :)
Finished version: human!Donnie
Donatello "Donnie" Hamato. 16. Japanese/Chinese American. Donnie is my favorite and I just love all my silly little ideas about him and all his autism. I am the same and I can’t get enough. You go, you Funky Flat Fuck (I’m not waiting till Friday to post, sorry.)
Some lil Donnie doodles I did today because I needed to make SOMETHING and this is cute.
I am also an autistic bean and although I wasn't diagnosed until I was 14, I definitely showed signs as a small child and I feel like Donnie DEFINITELY did too.
I HC that Splinter, you know, KNEW something was different from the beginning and knows Donnie is on the spectrum, but he can't get an official diagnosis for him because of This Whole Situation TM. But he's done a lot of research and knows Donnie loves music and dancing, so he teaches him bō-jutsu (known for its kinetic flow) to help him improve his proprioception and help them bond.
Bonus lil Leo because he's freakin cute AF, LOOK AT HIM.
I made myself sad so of course I must share and make you sad too.
Spoilers for the movie, also loosely based on my own experience with trauma and "the dark spiral" that neurodivergents sometimes get stuck in. Iykyk.
And yes it is vaguely inspired by that one amazing comic (if anybody knows the creator please let me know so I can credit them, no joke I spent an hour trying to find them to no avail) where Leo's comm is on while he's in the prison dimension and everyone can hear him being beaten nearly to death.
NOW LET'S TAKE IT WORLDWIDE! I will not be able to live in peace until every single trace of this disgusting company is put 6 ft under permanently!
Autism Speaks Canada is "concluding its operations" on January 31st 2025!
one of my personal autism things is getting excited about seeing something related to someone else's interest and showing it to them. i dont care about dr who but whenever i see something about it i used to always point it out to my grandma (who is a huge dr who fan) because seeing the stuff i like makes me happy! and i wanted to make her happy!
autistic people do show love, its just sometimes a bit different than the neurotypical way.
denki has hyperempathy, he cares a lot about others and sometimes he feels bad for inanimate objects, one time he apologized to one of his stuffed animals because he accidentally kicked it off the bed
he loves the fluff!! thats one reason why he plays with ojiro's tail so much,,, its just so soft!!!
he listens to the same song over and over on repeat, it confuses his friends but it makes him happy so they dont care much
special interests include pokemon, web design/programming ((the fact that he taught izuku how to make a fully functional website for mr smiley in one night(?) is incredible)), and his favorite bands. he's also into literature + history but he doesn't feel smart enough to make an effort to talk about it ((i mean,, his first thought about jiro's teasing hero name idea for him included a reference to A Farewell to Arms))
he panics over tests and quizzes, this improved drastically when he was allowed to go to a seperate testing environment so he could do whatever he wanted to focus without worrying about distracting others
stimming all the time. never sits still.
he's overexpressive, he tries to make his emotions really really clear which leads to exagurration in vocal tone and facial expressions, but most of the time his feelings are still clear
he's very bad at managing his volume when he speaks, he's always either too loud or way too quiet, at this point most of class 1-a has slowly gotten used to his loudness though
most of his sensory issues come with textures, especially food. he still eats things that a young child would because he just never got used to more complex foods with lots of different textures and flavors
denki loves weighted blankets, especially the really heavy, big ones that look like they could crush him
he has some stims he sticks to like flapping his hands or chewing on things like chewelry, but he usually just does whatever he feels like doing at the moment that seems right. can't predict it with him. he has a lot of vocal stims and echolalia
his echolalia is mostly phrases he finds funny or interesting, especially when it fits the current situation. if ur in a car w/ him you'll hear "road work ahead? uh yeah, i sure hope it does" like at least 3 times
kaminari has a surprising amount of meltdowns. they're not exactly common but they happen enough to be noticably frequent.
he feels like he has to be the happy ray of sunshine all the time so he usually bottles up all his problems/stress/sensory issues which leads to the more frequent meltdowns
kirishima tries to be a good allistic ally, he gets a little confused sometimes but denki could talk for hours about autism so he totally has someone to explain lol this post is getting long so i'll post a part 2!!!
I have the autism that makes me really good at song lyrics and really bad at most basic life skills
Do you have lined your toys up instead of playing autism or PowerPoint Autism
still have to get tested to see if i have ADHD/autism (fairly certain i might) but my blog is a safe space for everyone!
Fun fact: I’m autistic I’m gonna do a thing inspired by another person
oh and
currently remembering the time in 8th grade when i was a camp councelor and my special interest was brought up as the final answer in a trivia game and i was chosen to give the explanation and infodumped for SO LONG on a STAGE in front of the WHOLE CAMP until i finally looked up and everyone was staring at me and i was like “oh”
As part of a new campaign called Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children, the long-running children’s show introduced a Julia, a girl living with autism, in an online storybook. In the book, Elmo teaches Abby about Julia and autism. This story is just one part of the Sesame Street initiative to fight autism stigma.
Does anyone else ever like forget how to socialize when you're tired/stressed/sleepy/hurt(or sometimes randomly)? It's like I no longer remember what's an appropriate thing to say and have to take longer to cycle through dialogue options in my head before I can decide if it sounds okay or not...I've always just said 'my filter disappears when I'm tired' buts its more like my brain can't keep up with the social cues and dialogue possibilities after a certain point and starts shutting down and my 'mask' slips completely
on colors and being different and not being enough for yourself
(please reblog instead of liking)
my dad just came back from shopping within autism hours where they don't play music or announcements and dim the lights at the local mall and he said it was the best shopping experience he'd had in a while.
Now I know people who aren't autistic also benefit from a non-overstimulating environment. But when I tell you I got a vivid flashback to me telling my therapist I might be autistic and since there's a genetic component maybe one of my parents is and she was like "and which parent do you thinn exhibits these [autistic] behaviours?" and I said my dad and she said "Yes that's also what I thought."
Everyday I rue the one therapy session my dad went to when he was younger and he sat there in silence for one hour. Dad you could've changed my life.
this is how i analyse the one piece cast
This is true! If I join a community, there is a 90% chance that, by pure coincidence, most of the active people there are either on the spectrum or have some other form of Neurodivergent, such as ADHD.
Autistic people have their own equivalent of the gaydar
