“no – no, that’s not what i meant,” harlow quickly amended, shaking her head as she met salem’s eyes ( she almost forgot the color of her friend’s eyes after being away from one another for so long, she remembered a time where it was full of life ). “i know, i – i,” she paused, taking a breath as she let a small smile make way, “i missed you too, salem. so very much.”

“what did you mean?” he asks, dark eyes searching for answers he had no right to demand. a brow raises at her statement, genuinely surprised she returned the sentiment. “ the old me, ” he corrects. “ you miss the me before i got all screwed up. ” he really had drank himself stupid, saying things that were meant to hurt himself just to punish himself. it was unfair to be putting this onto harlow.

“i see,” she mumbled, mostly to herself as she started to mess with organizing the booth, anything but to look at who she used to consider a close friend and feel the pain of losing him again. “you have ?” harlow questioned, slowly raising her head but not meeting his gaze just yet, “i didn’t think you mind me that much anymore.”

“ don’t sound so surprised, that makes me sound terrible --- guess i am, after all. ” he chuckled at the tragic statement, betraying that he was definitely intoxicated if it wasn’t already obvious. he could be a surprising clear speaker despite however much alcohol he consumed. “ i don’t --- uh, i don’t know. i’m not good for people, you know that.”

    he had forced himself to cut off his steady supply of beer by keeping away from the bar and hanging around some helpful mermaids at the lagoon. everything went to shit when the first apparition appeared, waterlogged and barely able to speak, he remembered why he was the way that he was. “nope. got it done earlier but it washed off after i went for a swim.” and then to dry off, he spent the past hour in a bar, drinking until he was sure his ability was nullified. “just saw you and --- i missed you.”

“oh i’m sorry the booth’s cl–” she started only to blink at the sight of salem in front of her. harlow bit on her bottom lip, looking at everyone near them who were running happily before meeting salem’s eyes with her back straight and her head held high. “are you here to get your face done ?” she questioned as she waved her brush in front of him.
