Nubian Wild Ass Equus africanus africanus Family: Equidae Status and Conservation: Critically Endangered

This animal, resembling the Somali Wild Ass, lacks leg stripes but features a distinctive stripe along its back.

Once thought extinct in the wild since the 1970s,. Love this one! More from the Felidae family. The turn now is for the biggest in America. Jaguar At first glance, Jaguars and Leopards are not so easy to differentiate. They are like two brothers. One's appearance, the leopard, looks more graceful and stylized. While the Jaguar has a more bulky body and its legs are shorter. One is agile while the other one is made to wrestle. However, the biggest difference is that the leopard lives in Africa, Asia, and Oceania, while the Jaguar is found in America. The last member of the Giraffe family and to my eyes the most beautiful! I must say that when I saw it at the zoo the first time, it didn't strike me as much as now when I draw it. Is clearly the head of a giraffe in the body of a prehistoric animal adorned with the stripes of a zebra running down its legs. If you think of it, is like coming from a fantasy book. Okapi It is a living fossil and contrary to its closest relative, the giraffe, which is mostly found in the savannas, the okapis live in the dense forests of the Congo. It is very elusive and timid making it a really hard specimen to study in the wild. Therefore little is known about it. "Today, the last tiger subspecies and probably my favorite one: the Sumatran Tiger. While working on this animal, I discovered that it has several notable visual differences from other subspecies of tigers. One of the most striking is the length and density of its mane, which gives it an even more majestic appearance. Additionally, the tiger's stripes are thicker, creating a more vivid contrast in its coat.

Southern White Rhinoceros

The name of the White Rhinoceros is attributed to a translation error. In Dutch, "white" is pronounced as "widj," which actually means "wide," referring to the rhino's mouth width. A more precise, albeit unused, name for this species is the square-lipped rhinoceros. The White Rhinoceros is a genus comprising two subspecies. This is one of them. Wallpaper is available here.

I made a mistake in my last post. I confused the Long-Beaked Common Dolphin species with its subspecies the Arabian Common Dolphin. They are so alike that I am actually surprised I was able to notice the difference. The Long Baked Common Dolphin's beak is notably shorter and its body is a little bit slimmer that the subspecies. Colorwise is not a good way to tell because the variations are plenty and both, species and subspecies can present these variations. As far as I know, the Arabian Common Dolphin can be elevated to a species. More studies need to be conducted but that is the indicator.

Long-Beaked Common Dolphin

The Long-Beaked Common Dolphin was once thought to be the same species as the Short-Beaked Dolphin, but recent research has confirmed that they are, in fact, distinct species. Unlike their short-beaked cousins, this species tends to stay closer to the coast.

While not as abundant as the Short-Beaked Dolphin (which is the most common dolphin species), the Long-Beaked Common Dolphin is not currently classified as threatened or endangered. Some scientists have suggested the existence of subspecies within this species, but only the Arabian Common Dolphin has been officially recognized.

Nile Hippopotamus It is a common misconception that hippos cannot swim. However, rather than "walking" underwater, hippos are able to swim by using their powerful legs to propel themselves forward and their webbed feet to steer. So while they may not look as graceful as some other aquatic animals, hippos are actually quite adept at swimming. The Hippopotamus is a genus comprising three subspecies. This is one of them. I'm tired of drawing giraffes, but fortunately, I only have one more left to finish. After that, I'm excited to move on to drawing the Okapi, and once the family will be complete. Awesome!

Angolan Giraffe

The Angolan Giraffe, also known as the Namibian Giraffe, is native to southern Africa, specifically Namibia, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Angola. These giraffes have a unique coat pattern with irregular rusty brown patches on a whitish or light beige skin. Males have a distinctive bulk in the forefront.

There have been studies suggesting that the two surviving populations, one in the north and one in the south, may be different subspecies, but this conclusion has not yet been universally accepted within the scientific community. This one took me forever! But I was really into it. I actually animated the illustration once I finished. Check it out and also part of the process and some close-ups of the drawing on my Instagram account.

Masai Giraffe

This one is the largest giraffe of all. 5.5 meters high! This subspecies of giraffe are the tallest animal on earth. That is incredible. They can weigh up to 1.3 Tons and one-third of that weight is in their neck.

Another interesting thing is their tongue which can be 50 cm long. It is prehensile and allows them to grab leaves graciously.

Its numbers have reduced by 50% in the last few decades. Although there are more than 22.000 in the wild, it is alarming that the numbers have plumbed so fast. There have been sights of albino giraffes (white) and also very dark ones (which are really beautiful).

Tapirus terrestris terrestris

Tapirs are like living fossils. They haven't changed much in years because they are well-adapted to this world. That was until we came into the picture. We, humans, move in this world at a pace that is hard to follow for many animals, and Tapirs are one of them. Their habits are just the opposite. Its reproduction is slow, making it very hard for them to recover once is decimated in some areas. They wander vast distances which means they need space and we are not providing that to them. Kill roads, fragmentation of the environment, crops in jungles, etc.

I think we need to understand that we are at the top of this world. Whatever we do is going to have repercussions on everything that surrounds us. We decide where the world is going and how it does it. That means also, that we are responsible for all living beings. Now is not like before, when animals extinguish because they couldn't adapt to the environment. Now they extinguish basically because they couldn't adapt to us. I loved drawing this one. As someone commented on a dolphin I posted from the same family: Is like the pandas of the water. Again, what fascinates me the most about doing this animal encyclopedia is that I get to know mammals I didn't know existed and I can share that information with you all. Thank you for following and being interested. Let's see what can we learn from this wonderful dolphin.

Hector's Dolphin Hector's Dolphin lives exclusively on the coasts of New Zealand. They can live up to 22 years and are some of the smallest dolphins in the world. (If I'm not wrong the Vaquita is the smallest). Because of its size, predators can be numerous. Blue sharks, White sharks, Broadnose sevengill sharks, and probably Killer whales and Mako sharks. They hunt using echolocation which is basically finding prey using sound (Just as bats do). Their clicks (the sound they make) isn't as complex as other animals and travel short distances. Nonetheless is enough for them, since their environment is crowded and sound wouldn't be able to go long distances anyways. This animal is not in danger but its subspecies, the Māui Dolphin is probably one of the most endangered dolphins in the world, if not the most. Working on this one was simply amazing. I was able to catch the lighting and the shadows to make it as real as possible. Colombian Tapir

The Colombian Tapir is a subspecies of the Lowland Tapir and lives exclusively in Colombia. Colombia has three of the four subspecies of Lowland Tapir and this subspecies inhabits the lowlands of the North of the country. 

The species is ranked as Vulnerable but this subspecies is classified as Critically Endangered in Colombia. Extinct already in many areas where it used to be seen due mostly to fragmentation of its environment, some recent studies showed the reappearance of the subspecies in areas where hasn't been seen for decades. Some think that the animal was never gone. The land where the animal lived is mostly unpopulated and keep an eye. Either the harsh environment or the internal struggle of the country, somehow keep human populations away from the forest and make the study of this subspecies, or any other, difficult.  __________________________________________

Working on this one took me forever. I’m very happy with the result though because I wanted a pose that portrays the animal with majesty and power.

Bengal Tiger

If you ever saw a tiger, 90% of the chances are that you saw a Bengal Tiger. It is the most famous and probably the one that has inspired us the most. The versatility that the tiger has to propel the imagination of humans is unmeasurable. From a cruel villain to a magnificent god, its charisma and beauty have made us dream for centuries, and are now just part of the whole human culture, regardless of nationality.

It is also the popular white tiger which is nothing but a lack of melanin, the pigment in charge of giving us color. Less popular but equally magnificent and extremely rare is the golden tiger which can be seen just in captivity. A problem! if you ask me because this means that has been humanly altered genetically to get the color. There is also the black tiger, which is not completely black. Its black stripes are thicker making the orange color less visible. However, there are some reports stating that completely black tigers have been spotted in the wild. No photographs have been taken though.

Drawing giraffes is fun and somehow easier than others animals. Because they are so long, the amount of details somehow reduces considerably, and still, the animal will look great. Differentiating this one is probably the hardest so far. I felt that the spots and color of the giraffe aren’t so characteristic as other ones like the Niger or Reticulated Giraffe. On the other hand, the close relationship that has with the Rothschild’s Giraffe (you will see in the next giraffe post) make things a little harder.  Nubian Giraffe  According to what I read, this is the nominate subspecies which in other words means that was the first subspecies to be described. Therefore, its Latin name is repeated twice (Giraffa camelopardalis camelopardalis). This giraffe is Critically Endangered. It is believed that there are less than 2150 in the wild. However, about 1500 are from Rothschild’s Giraffe, leaving the Nubian Giraffe with less than 650 individuals. It is extinct in the wild in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, and Eritrea. Working these days has been a little difficult for me. As I mentioned, I moved to live in Canada last week and for now, I don’t have a place to live. I’m staying in the house of a friend and I have spent most of my time getting used to the weather in Vancouver and looking for a house. So far so good. I like changes and I think that being uncomfortable, sometimes just shakes the routine away and forces you to try new things. In my life, I have lived in eight different places. What do you think about moving from your comfort zone? Read you in the comments.

Lowland Tapir This species is a little bit tricky. English books just recognize one species, while Spanish and Portuguese recognize four. Since the animal is from South America and most of the biologists who studied this animal are from there, I will believe their information has more credibility. Therefore, I will present four subspecies of Lowland Tapir. Let’s begin. Tapirus terrestris aenigmaticus From what I understood and what I have seen, this one coloration is darker. This might not be a parameter to identify the subspecies, since animals of the same species can present various colorations. However, its skull presents substantial differences.

This is probably the most unknown Tapir for me because I always thought that this one and the Amazonic Tapir were the same. Now I can see how different they are. (And you will see as well when I post the Amazonic one). Store Instagram

Baird's Tapir it owns its name to a Naturalist called Fullerton Baird. It is funny how naturalists in general like to name "things" and they think that those "things" didn't have a name before. Well, this one had. Danta, Anteburro, Macho de monte and Mountain Cow just to name a few. It inhabits all of Central America. Not Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, or Missouri, no. I'm talking about real America where in this case, Central America will be that piece of land that unites South with North America and is divided into many countries such as Belice, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Panama, among others. Also can be found in Colombia and Ecuador. Baird's Tapir is mostly nocturnal and likes to live close to water because they love to take baths. In fact, they are great swimmers. One thing that I found cute about these Tapirs is that they are monogamous, which means that they mate for life. Both parents are in charge of raising their offspring. Because of its size, adults Baird's Tapir's only predators are Crocodiles and Jaguars. However, humans and its actions have put these species in constant decline. Instagram Store Indian Javan Rhinoceros Working on this one was very nice. My reference was an old and pixelated black and white photography so I had to figure out textures and colors. Working on these animals awoke my curiosity about them. Am I ever going to see one? What would it be the sensation of it? the feeling of the air around, the smell, its movements. How would I feel around him? I probably would never know because I am almost sure I will never see a Javan Rhinoceros but drawing them somehow pulls me closer to them. I really hope this animal survives extinction, it will be a great defeat to humanity. ____________________________ This animal never did well in zoos and hasn't been in one in more than a century. The oldest one lived to be 20 years while in the wild they can live up to 40 years old. There are registers of 22 Javan Rhinos in zoos but there were probably more because it was commonly confused with the Indian Rhino. The last Javan Rhino in a zoo was in Adelaide, Australia in 1907 and was thought to be an Indian rhino. This subspecies is extinct.

It is almost impossible to find a complete photograph of the Javan Rhinoceros. Doing this illustration was very challenging but also I had to be more creative.

Indonesian Javan Rhinoceros

The second species from the Rhinocerontidae genus is the elusive and rarest big mammal, the Javan Rhinoceros. There are about 60 individuals in the world, making this rhino the most endangered big mammal in the world.

The surprising thing is that it wasn't the case 200 years ago. It was the most common rhinoceros in the world and could be found from India to Indonesia (Nepal, Burma, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc). Sport hunting, poaching, and environmental deterioration put him on the brink of extinction today.

It was often confused with the Indian Rhino. The biggest difference will be its size, which the Javan Rhinoceros is considerably smaller, its armor is less marked, and the triangle formed at the back of the neck is less notorious in the Indian Rhino.

Antilocapridae Family Sonoran Pronghorn

This is a very interesting family and a very small one. It is formed by one species and five subspecies. Today, the Sonoran Pronghorn.

Owes its name to the Sonoran desert where it inhabits. I could not find physical differences with the other subspecies. However, these subspecies can survive longer without water.

The Pronghorns are the fastest mammal in the New World. It is often called the Antelope of America because of its resemblance to the African ones, however, its closest relatives are the giraffes.

This subspecies along with the others is endangered. It shares the habitat with an active United States Air Force Bombing range.

No more than 200 hundred survived in the United States and is believed that in Mexico its numbers are even lower. Sri Lankan Spotted Chevrotain

What we know about nature is never carved on stone. What at some point in history we believe is the irrefutable truth, deeper studies of the subject often prove us wrong.

It was until 2005 that this species was separated from its closest relative, The Indian Spotted Chevrotain (Which I introduced last week) and today is recognized as a whole new species. Is obvious to say now, that not much is known about this

Gray Whale

The last member of the balaenopteridae family: The Gray Whale. (you might wonder why the sperm whale is not included but that one belongs to another family closer to dolphins as orcas do. I didn't know that)

This one habitat is way more reduced but its number is fine. Also called the Evil whale because it was a fierce fighter when hunted. (I wonder if there would be any animal who wouldn't fight for its life)

It is a very distinctive whale and the only extant of its family with its last relatives seen in the Neogene era.

Maybe the most notable marks are the withe spots all around its body product of scars left by parasites that fall off when is on cold grounds.

Three specimens were kept captive through history. The first one called Gigi in 1965 died two months after. However, in 1972 another catch called Gigi II, was held for a year after grew too much and had to be released. A third one was kept captive in SeaWorld San Diego for 14 months and also was released because of its size.

Whales are ugly, or not. Probably both. On one side they look like a deformed giant body with a massive mouth that when opens make the animal looks even weirder. But then a beautiful tale swipes with force and breaks the ocean's surface and is accompanied by a pair of powerful fins that make that weird body moves gracefully as if it's dancing. It's a perfect combination of grotesque and beauty that combined with its size made us fall in love with it. ______

Humpback Whale

If there is a whale that has been ingrained in the imagination of humanity for centuries, and has been the one that make us fall in love of these magnificent mammals, is without a doubt, the Humpback Whale. Probably the most notorious whale in nature, the Humpback Whale has it's own genus (Megaptera) and stands out as a single one. However, some scientist have noticed that the populations in different regions have been developing very distinctive characteristics that theoretically will diverge the species into various subspecies. In other words: Evolution. In whaling times, this species almost got extinct, with it's population dropping to an alarming 90% before 1996. Today's numbers are stable around 80.000 and we can say is safe and can be found in mostly all oceans.

This is the only whale I have ever seen in my life. (well just a tail surfacing the sea) and despite the seconds I had the chance to observed it, it was extremely captivating. I hope one day I can see more of these beautiful animals and hopefully too, some of its relatives. ________________

Blue Whale

"We must feel lucky to be sharing the world with the biggest animal that ever existed."

Not even the biggest dinosaur is a match for the size of the Blue Whale, the largest animal that ever existed on earth. The largest-ever registered was 33 meters. It is the biggest size the animal can reach in order to function correctly. A fifth subspecies could be a population that inhabits the coasts of Chile. A group with unique vocalization and notable genetic differences.

I must say that whales are fascinating. I still find it hard to wrap the size of this animal. I hope one day I could see one of them. Today is protected because it was heavily hunted almost to its extinction. In 1966, its hunt was banned by the International Whaling Commission. ___________________________

Omura's Whale Little is known about this whale because was until 2003 that it was thought to be a smaller form of the Bryde's Whale. The description was made public in Nature, a British scientific weekly journal by three Japanese scientist. They determine the existence of the new specimen by DNA analysis. It was later discovered that its closest relative might be the Blue Whale. It is one of the smallest species of rorqual.

Searching for images of this whale I saw a few videos of the whale eating and it was amazing. I never thought this size o f animal could be so fast.

Sei Whale

Is the third-largest rorqual before the Fin whale and the Blue whale. Heavily hunted in the XIX and XX century its numbers dropped from 250.000 to 80.000 which in other words mean less than a third of the pre whaling population. Today luckily is protected.

Mass deaths events have been recorded numerous times and the reason why isn't clear but it appears to be endemic poisoning called red tide. It is a phenomenon of decoloration of the sea surface that occurs by an overpopulation of certain microorganisms, apparently caused by the unprecedented warming of the Pacific Ocean. The biggest mass death event documented happened in Chile in June 2015 where 337 death Sei Whales were counted.
