Genuinely got a migrane from the way they formatted that exam

As someone who did the general and foundation exam I want to say that the foundation exam was somehow worse written than any of the other exams

Thursday, May 4, 2k17: EXAM TIPS

4.Ā May is AP Exam season! What are your tips for studying for tests?

May Study challenge by nkbstudies

So here in Canada, we don’t have AP at every school and our exams are at the end of June. BUT, I have picked up a few tips.Ā

1. Make review sheets at the end of each unit. By the end of the semester, these will pile up and you can look back @ summaries of the entire year. Here’s a quick way to create one, s/o to my Math teacher.Ā

Thursday, May 4, 2k17: EXAM TIPS

2. Flash cards. Ofc this one is obvious, BUT instead of just defining the term, try to get the term by the definition, work backwards!Ā

3. Clean/organize/create a new layout for your study. This’ll help to not only distract you but motivate you bc everything will look nice now. It’ll also give your brain a new place to work at.Ā

4. Practice Worksheets. A lot of you like to rewrite your notes (and so do I!) but another thing that is similar and works well is creating mini worksheets and working on them whenever you can. Whenever I know that I’m going to get these say like four questions wrong, I would make worksheets of about 10 questions and add these ones in them, sometimes worded differently. I do them whenever I have a spare moment, such as on the way home, during lunch break, at homeroom. This forces me to think and eventually causes me to remember them. Try to pick problems that you know for SURE are on the test!

This is so nice!

This Is So Nice!

I want to wish everyone who has upcoming exams all the best ✨ I know it’s a very stressful time but it’s also the time for us to harvest what we’ve sown. I hope all the effort we’ve made throughout the years will show and that we’re one step closer to our goals šŸ Remember that I love you and I will be here if you ever want someone to talk to, about the good stuff and the bad! Please take care of yourselves 🌹

Wow...I can't believe it.

I've finished my exams and I'm now done with high school. I'm so happy it's done but I will miss all of the teachers I met along the way.

Wow...I Can't Believe It.

Also today a teacher gave me a plushie of my character, Ballora Boo as a leaver's gift and I absolutely love it.

Things You Will Say To Yourself Pre Exam

Me: Alright, you got this. You can do this. You can learn everything that has been taught this semester.

Me: It's time. It's time to study, to cram, to learn.

Me: No. No, no. No, no, no. No, no, no, just no. You do NOT NEED TO WATCH ANOTHER EPISODE OF ______. Study. Go watch a lecture.

Me: You need to get off social media. Actually you just need to get off your phone. Put it downstairs in the living room. You do not need it.

Me: Seriously. Every semester. At least one class you've basically not attended and it has an exam. And now you're suffering for it.

Me: Ok. Lets study. Go get your book, your textbook aand your laptop. Cause let's face it, it's the first time you've learnt this shit.

Me: Get motivated. You do not have time to do this shit. You can't afford to be able to not concentrate.

Me: Ok, you can't concentrate on reading the textbook, you read that paragraph roughly six times and you have no clue what it said. Watch the lecture, yeah. The lecture will be easier to concentrate on.

Me: You are not a quitter. You're not. So lets stay up another hour or two and get one more week summarised for your exam notes.

Me: Do you really want to do this class again? Like really? Cause its not like you pay and then you can do it however many times it takes. You Pay Each Time You Take It. So Study. Learn the material. Learn the shit. Pass the exam. You are not forking out another grand on this class.

Me: Next semester will be different. You'll go to all of your classes, you'll do all your readings. And you'll do weekly summaries so you'll already have your exam notes done.

General advice for GCSE and A levels

So I was asked a question by a follower and I thought it might be beneficial to post some general advice for all the future candidates whose GCSEs and A levels aren’t cancelled because of a pandemic. Here’s a short list of what helped me get through these exams.

1) Getting exam technique down is IMPORTANT! Do not underestimate this importance - knowing what the examiners want from you is (sadly) almost more important than knowledge of content (though you do have to know that, too!)

2) Understand the question words. For example, explain means give detail, and list means don’t waste time with such detail.

3) Answer the question as it is written, not what you want the question to be. Some questions are really long winded - they’ll wrap up the question with some background material that you haven’t learnt about per se but is still relevant and applicable to your course. You have to be able to unravel the core of what the examiners are asking. Don’t worry about the wall of information. Do read it as be ready to glean clues from it, but find the question first.

4) Read the mark schemes AND THE EXAMINERS’ REPORTS! Last year’s documents are locked because teachers like to use them for mocks, but if you’ve already done those papers, ask your teachers to send you them. These are gold! Use the mark schemes to know which buzzwords and details the examiners will reward and use the examiners reports to see which questions candidates struggled to answer. There is almost always detailed analysis of common mistakes and advice to future candidates there!

5) Look through the teacher-oriented documents. I know for OCR A Biology A level, there were sample documents that gave examples of full marks, mid marks and low marks for long response questions. They literally hand you ā€œwhat a good one looks likeā€ (and it was easy to find because of how new the specification is). I was never given these documents in class! Nobody you have contact with knows the course better than a teacher who is meant to teach it. For A level languages, I read every single document, no matter how boring it seemed, which perhaps was a bit overkill, but it helped me know what exactly was expected of me. I’m talking everything from the specification to exemplar work and speaking exam conduct (which actually was useful because I then knew what would happen if I got too distressed to continue for example, as I knew what the teacher/examiner would be required to do in that case). It sounds nuts, but seeing it from a teacher’s perspective helped me. I knew the structure of my course by heart; I knew weightings of different aspects of exams and the learning objectives by which I was assessed. A lot of it is irrelevant admin, but there are actually some useful documents so do have a root through!

6) Don’t be afraid of old spec questions if the subject matter is relevant.

7) Revising using past papers is always the best way, ultimately. If you run out of past papers, make your own questions and file them away and come back to them! I buddied up with a friend and we tested each other, swapping our own exam-style questions at periodic intervals and marking our partner’s answers. You get to be the examiner, the marker and the candidate in one simple activity!

8) Learn from your mistakes. Don’t look at a lower mark and think you’re doomed; rather, think about where you went wrong. You’d be surprised at how many marks are lost to silly mistakes for which you’ll absolutely kick yourself in hindsight! Little mistakes might be avoided by doing something as little as slowing down, taking a toilet break to clear your head and generally being aware of them.

9) If there’s a certain type of question you struggle to answer, it may help to make a checklist of what to include. For example, whenever I’m asked to draw a graph, I write down things like ā€œsuitable axes using more than half the available space, x is independent variable, labels, title, units, correctly plotted points, line of best fitā€ in a corner somewhere out the way - and I’m at university rn! I do this before I start fumbling about with the question; it takes less than 30s to jot it down in a shorthand I understand.

10) Teach someone else, or pretend to! Even now, I remember stuff and understand it better if I’m ā€œexplainingā€ my thought process out loud as if I were teaching it. Understanding things will make subjects like chemistry a lot easier, because then you can apply what you know rather than blindly rote learn a bunch of examples. Mechanism you’re not quite sure of? Draw it out and talk it through! You’ll quickly pinpoint exactly what you’re struggling with.

11) Breathe and look after yourself. It’s not impossible; so much of success is about confidence. If you convince yourself you can’t do something, you absolutely won’t - attitude is everything and so is your health.

Mindmaps make everything look so much more manageable

Today has been really productive. I went to school for two hours for some biology revision and then went to meet a friend for lunch. It was such a lovely day that I chose to walk the hour back home rather than catch a bus so I could listen to the audiobook version of Nineteen Eighty Four. However, as punishment for being healthy, I now have blisters on the soles of both feet :(

Break the problem down

From personal experience, life is hard and stress hits you like a tonne of bricks. Exams are coming, deadlines are forever nearing and you feel like one thing is coming at you after another and you can’t possibly finish all this in time to the best of your ability but omg everyone will be mad or disappointed if you don’t and AHHHHHHHH

Stop that.

When you are overwhelmed by stress and believe you cannot possibly succeed, face that shit objectively. Write your stress source down or talk it out and belittle it as much as you can.

For example: ā€œholy shit I have to sit an A Level in Maths and I’ve been learning the content for less than a year all on my own. I don’t have many practice materials and that shit looks hard. I will run out of time because I also have 4 other A Levels to sit and I will fail.ā€ (Me irl bc I’m crazy)

Becomes: ā€œIt’s a few questions on a sheet of paper. All you have to do is work on your weaknesses. You should make a timetable to prove to yourself you have time. It’s not A* or bust - do your best.ā€

Because that’s all it is. Take the emotions away from the problem. Temporarily take everything that’s riding on that one thing away and strip it right back to what it’s really about. Make yourself believe that it is not above you. Once you convince yourself you can do it, actually doing it becomes a hell of a lot easier.

*I’m not saying those things are not important or not a big deal. I’m saying for the sake of your sanity, make it manageable.*

I'm afraid that I won't pass my exams... In 9 grade, I'll have exams, which will help me to go in 10 grade, but... I have serious issues with maths... I'm afraid that if I won't pass it, I'll go and commit suicide. Somewhere, deep, in my soul, I don't want die cuz of it. But I feel like I will and like I should.

But... Even if I'll commit suicide, people will just forget me, and I'll be just a random kid, that made grave for themselves. I... I have no idea what to do...
